Hi everyone!

I just bought myself a R33 GTR V-Spec N1 and just having a thought about what to do with it. I would like to keep to as stock as possible (no engine mods or hardcore ones). Currently it's got everything that the N1 comes with cept for the Work rims (hoping to get a bronze LMGT4 down the track, suggestion for offset and tyres? Anyone sell?) and a Trust titanium exhaust system which I have no idea what model is it (after looking around it can either be the PE-TI or TIR?)

The car isnt even lowered and the only illegal thing about the car would probably be the exhaust sound (quite loud and I remember seeing somewhere its on the 92-96dB range, legal 90?). After reading, sliencer seems to do the trick but it'll restrict airflow/power and a 2nd muffler seems to be the go. Any ideas on reducing the sound level without affecting the performance?

I dont know much about the N1 spec but I'm assuming the ECU will be replaced by either the Haltech E11V2 or PFC (recommendations?). And after that if everything else is ok, where do I get it tuned? I'm assuming I will need to bring it to someone reliable and professional since I've never touch anything like this before (anywhere around Brisbane? I can only think of APC at Underwood.)

I have not bring the car for a dyno yet and have no idea what boost it's running on but I dont feel an awful lot of power when I am driving it though. Considering everything is stock, what would be a good reliable setting for the car and at the same time gives you the satisfaction of owning a GTR?

Congrats on the purchase.

If you have a look in the RB26 Upgrade thread, almost all of your answers will be answered in there. Best place to start.

If it has all the N1 gear inc N1 turbos, thats a big bonus as they will be fitted with steel turbine wheels which enables you to run high boost without them exloding, like the regular ceramic turbines do.

Youd be able to nudge 300kw with all the right mods and keep it stock-looking without doing turbos.

A powerfc is the easiest, cost effective and most popular option.

Femno: I was reading all the threads for the past wk or so but seriously I cant even find somewhere that says the best offset for GTR. But what I did find was by changing the ECU it'll make a whole lot of difference, which is why I'm just planning to do just that. Yes its got steel turbines instead of ceramic. Its a stock N1 not a GTR with N1 mods.

Blitz: Thanks! I got it from Imperial Auto Imports here in Brissy. Was hunting around for 34s but this made me change my mind as I'll have more spare cash with me if I dont get the 34. Yea I know they're rare but I dont really have an idea how many were produced. Figures where 45 were produced for 34 N1 and some 200+ for 32? But I cant find much infos on the 33 not to mention specs on the N1 as well (like whats the standard power and what are they good for as stock etc.).

N1GTR: Thats what I'll be doing but I suppose changing ECU isnt such a big deal as compared to engine/intercooler mods. For now I only have the ECU, rims and exhaust (getting it softer) on my mind... Maybe also the pod filter for BOV sound?

Savman: Cool! Thats what I need. Someone to confirm the reliability and power output from basic mods. I'll add the boost controller to the list. Does it matter what brand/model is the boost controller? Thanks!

hmm I wouldn't modify something that rare... make sure you keep all standard parts etc as it will be worth much more when or if you ever sell

Savman's N1 Targa car would be a replica I assume? I wouldn't rally a car that was only 1 of 4 in Australia!

Since you got a very rare R33 GTR V-Spec N1, from factory they are a lot more refined then your standard GTR's.

The N1's are usually hand built and very well balanced allowing the N1 engines to rev a lot smoother.

Your N1 engine should be the following = Twin ball bearing metal turbochargers (much stronger than the standard ceramic turbos used), Reinforced N1 Cylinder Block, N1 Pistons, N1 Piston Rings, N1 Con-Rods, N1 Oil Pump, N1 Water Pump and N1 Exhaust Manifold.

To identify the N1 Cylinder Block, there is the number 24U stamped on the block as opposed to 05U for standard GTR's.

They are Race Spec Engines and was developed by Nismo for Group A Racing in Japan.

Power wise, I would utilise as much out of the N1 twin turbos you have, as they run 1.2 Bar (17.4 Psi) of boost (Well I know the R34 GTR N1's did) Just double check to make sure what yours run.

So a Boost controller / APexi Power FC would come in handy.

ECU is most probley a stock one from Nissan to suite (Programmed to) the N1 Spec's.

I would not bother modifing anything else with the engine but the only other thing is you can go for some HKS (or whatever brand) Adjustable Cam Gears to get the perfect timing.

An exhaust, which I believe you already have will free up the exhaust flow is a must on GTR engines, atleast a 3" exhaust.

Nismo / Nismo Weldina and Kakimoto make a nice performance exhaust, which just purrs softly on idle and has a nice roar on full throttle.

HKS make a Silent Hi-Power exhaust, which is nice as well and no "Drone".

You can think about upgrading your air intake to twin pod filters, but your panel filter should be good for around 300kW (rear wheels) or if you want, just upgrade the panel filter to a high flow one. APexi or K&N brand will do.

Stock GTR intercoolers are great for around 300kW's (rear wheels).

Also your N1 should have came with a factory Oil Cooler (sitting infront of your radiator down the left hand side as you are facing the car) So your oil temps will be at a good consistant level, which is good for the engine.

Since the N1's are based on V-Spec models, you should have firmer suspension then the standard GTR's but still, at high speeds in and out of the corners, you might still get abit of body roll so I would suggest you to upgrade it to full adjustable suspensions. The only thing you will lose is your nice soft comfortable ride = The pain you put up with on a race car LOL! :wave:

Put a nice set of 17" or 18" Nismo LMGT4's on and get some good tyres.

Brakes wise, you should already have Brembos and just make sure you use top quality brake pads, Brembo of course LOL! :P

Skyline: Thanks for the suggestion! Very detailed and exactly what I was thinking. The previous owner put the ABS back on and judging from the condition of the car, I would have thought the previous owner is like me (I'm putting a/c on it... dont kill me!). I wouldnt rally it or do any serious mods but at the same time I would like to get as much power out of it as what you have suggested.

Thanks to all that help me assure myself with just an ECU upgrade will do the trick.

A/C! Thats what the windows are for... Ah well you do live in QLD and it get bloody hot up there LOL!

And yes as you know the ABS, A/C, Stereo, Rear windscreen wiper, carpets where removed to save weight.

BTW did your R33 GTR come with a factory Carbon Fibre bonnet to save weight?

I know the R34 GTR N1's did...

Skyline: Yea it does get quite hot up here and Mrs' complain about the a/c. Actually I dont know. The bonnet doesnt feel as light as carbon but its not steel either. I'm guessing aluminium. Its not heavy thats all I can say.

Yeah you better keep the Mrs' happy for sure LOL!

Im guessing its an Aluminium bonnet then, I could not find anything saying its Carbon Fibre except the R34 GTR N1 is.

Ah well, I was told Carbon Fibre is only a few Kg's lighter then Aluminium so not too much to wory about. Hehe!!

There were some when it was posted on carsale but the importer has removed the ad since. I'll remember to take some detail photos when I dropby maybe over the weekend. These were taken by the mrs...

Hopefully I should be able to pick it up end of next week. The only part that I'm waiting on is the condenser thats coming from sydney and my friend to do a full rust protection for the car next week.

    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
    • Well they got my money but they are not getting my gearbox ! 
    • It's needed for rolling idle up, and I think it is a decider on VCT also.
    • I mean, not really. Link ECU's can absolutely still have errors from the ECU thinking it's getting a sensor it's not expecting. I would imagine the speed at the ECU level in Nistune does absolutely nothing anyway? I assume the ECU does not do any fancy TC stuff with regards to front+rear wheel speed or anything of that like anyway. Someone who uses Nistune may be more fluent in it.
