I suspect the starter motor is going/gone.

It goes 'click' but doesn't try to spin. Its done it once before.

Will need to check the wiring is OK, and try hitting it with a hammer. I didn't have time to mess with it this morning.

Sounds like a problem with the AFM and CAS.... I'm just sayin.

Martin, where did you get your z32 ecu all wired up for Nistune? I could do it myself but i am not all too confident in my soldering skills...

So,

Starter trigger wire is fine, because I can hear it throwing out.

Belting with a heavy breaker bar didn't help (no room to swing a hammer).

Voltage Readings look something like this

"ON"

Battery - 12V

Starter Feed Wire @ Battery - 12V

Starter Feed Wire @ Motor - 12V

Terminal on Motor - 12V

"START"

Battery - 11.6V

Starter Feed Wire @ Battery - 11.6V

Starter Feed Wire @ Motor - 11.6V

Terminal on Motor - 0V

Problem with the connection of the wire to the motor?

I put a jumper cable from the battery to the terminal on the motor, and she started fine.

Took the jumper cable off, and it wouldn't spin again. However, a few quick turns to "START" and she kicked into life again. Now starting no problems.

On the weekend I might try disconnecting the feed wire and hit it with contact cleaner then put it back on...

So,

Check your earth connection to the battery as well. When that starter needs to draw like 60 amps or some shit, if you have bad connections, it won't be enough to throw it. Sometimes, also, adding the extra lead enables it to get past this point and throw anyway, even though the bad connection is the slip rings or solenoid.

I'd try cleaning earths and power cable first, then if it still plays up, pull the starter apart and just clean it out. 90% of the time it works every time :devil:

yep agree, sometimes a reading on a multi-meter for voltage wont tell you the condition of the connection under heavy load...

start with the basics Martin, your on the right track...

i seem to remember telling martin to check the wiring to and from his starter motor the other weekend when it broke down on him.

I heard it throwing this morning but no starter turning, if i was more aleart i would have offered some assistance.

In other news i worked back late tonight, need cash to throw around for my NZ trip in a couple weeks, got home at 11:30 tonight though. :(

I'll be in the 10% that breaks it for sure :P. I have a spare starter somewhere, might just find it and swap it in.

Yeah I can't measure the current directly with a 10A multimeter, that's why I measured the voltage with the key to 'START'. At least then you can compare the voltage with load/no load.

LOL so helpful ;) If after checking all the wiring may be worth checking the bearing in the tip of the starter motor. My one on the corolla had a tendancy to keep wearing in an oval shape; gripping the motor when it threw out.

martin, just hitch a horse to it and treat it the way a pintara is meant to roll :P

I doubt a horse would be able to pull the heavy-a*se piece of sh*t.

A pull-starter might be in order though...

    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.

    • It's needed for rolling idle up, and I think it is a decider on VCT also.
    • I mean, not really. Link ECU's can absolutely still have errors from the ECU thinking it's getting a sensor it's not expecting. I would imagine the speed at the ECU level in Nistune does absolutely nothing anyway? I assume the ECU does not do any fancy TC stuff with regards to front+rear wheel speed or anything of that like anyway. Someone who uses Nistune may be more fluent in it.
