Hi Guys,

I have a fairly stock R34 GTT, full exhaust, FMIC, pod filter, BOV, AVCR.

I have set low on the AVCR to 0.5bar and high to .75bar.

I have noticed especially on high boost pinging at and above 4000rpm.

What causes pinging, and what sort of things can resolve pinging?

Too much timing, poor fuel, not enough fuel

So it'll either be your running too much timing, or fuel pump dying and/or blocked fuel filter

I assume your using PULP... so one of the above

I would go and get a FULL service, oils, plugs, filters and THEN put it on a dyno and check the AFR's and go from there

Most people can't hear detonation, easiest way to describe the sound is the sound that is made on a geiger counter that detects radiation. This is what you are hearing?

Very rare for the stock ECU (with only such minor mods) to allow such audible detonation at only 4000rpm, hence why im thinking it might be something else that you think is detonation.

I've never heard anyone call it "pinking" before either lol It's eithet dotonatin/knocking or pinging.

Anyway, I have tried to hear an engine pinging when the tuner said it was doing it ..and I was right next to the engine with the bonnet up and I couldn't hear shit over the engine noise.

So for you to be able to hear it from your driver seat whilst driving .. hmm, it's either not detonation or you've got some violent detonations and the engine is about to blow up

By the way, at the very least you should have your ecu remapped if you can't afford an aftermarket one .. Toshi here in Sydney does a GTT for $400 I believe. He'll fix up your ignition timing and AFRs to prevent detonations

I think there's a guy called Dr Drift down in Melbourne who does the same thing.

Just ordered myself a Walbro fuel pump and will be changing that, will also get myself a fuel filter on the weekend.

I have booked my car in for a remap and dyno run with Dr Drift, but he couldn't fit me in till mid may so I will just have to wait until then.

Thanks everyone for all the advice I appreciate it :-)

Ended up being fuel. I refilled with BP Ultimate and took it for a squirt and the pinging was gone.

I had bought the fuel filter and fuel pump before refilling so decided to change those anyway. Probably better to have new better stuff anyway.

Still gonna get it tuned though as I have been hanging to do it for a while and this just gave me the push I needed to book it in.

    • But seriously, can we ask for the results of the "tip a bottle of metho into a nearly empty tank" experiment?
    • Hang on. Let me get this straight. The desire is to have coilovers, BC in particular, to be MORE comfortable on Sydney roads than stock suspension? Well, that's obviously not right. BCs have crude damping design at the very best, and typically hard spring rates. BC stands for Billy Cart. And then, the desire is to put in some shitty old worn out stockers, to get it blue slipped and then put the BCs back in? And then.....what? Not worry about getting pulled up by the Plod? Because you seem to have raised a worry about paying for engineering (which actually does solve all your legality problems) and still getting pulled up.... but the only problem there is that if/when that happens you have to show your paperwork at the inspection station. Whereas, if you just swap in borrowed shitty old stockers to get it slipped now, and then you get defected in the future, you have to go find more shitty old stockers then too. You course of action looks like this set of options: Buy brand new stock type dampers, and springs. probably cost a bit more than $1k all up, but will last for the remaining life of the car. Put them in, pass inspection, drive on them forever more. Hell, they could even be really nice Bilsteins and Kings or other lower&stiffer springs if you wanted. Get the car engineered as is. ~$1k. Buy new Shockworks coilvers (or MCA) and also pay for engineering. You're spending a lot more here. But these will be the best things that you could drive around on.
    • Might be worthwhile hitting up Facebook's groups, I know most of them contain terrible people and scammers - however you might be able to find someone that's in Sydney with factory suspension you could purchase and/or hire. Just do not send any form of money anywhere, in person cash only.
    • Thanks @Duncan Ride height is fine. I think it's almost stock tbh. Happy to share a pic. I don't actually have a regular mechanic as haven't lived in Sydney too long. Could you or anyone recommend any shops in Sydney?
