lol that's a lot of effort for and LS1 when you can just mount an Over The Radiator type intake!

Mine seems to suck better with a APEXi pod than a BLITZ one, but its probably just a placebo effect to reassure my wallet that I didn't waste 150 bucks! If i had the standard airbox I'd fit it back on - my car also seems to have a CAI snorkel leading up to where the pod / filter box sits, it looks like a factory fitment.

That LS1 in in an S14 so over the radiator is out of the question. In any case, why would you want to draw air in from over the radiator and preheat the air - its defeating the purpose isn't it?

Yes thats all great when the car is moving at speed - but most engine bay heatsoak occurs at low speed stop/start traffic and when stationery at lights - causing intake temps to increase without a CAI.

I have seen some carbon fibre over the radiator intakes for LS1's which would be a better proposition than the typical aluminium ones I see which are more prone to having the same surface temp as the radiator itself.

ok ok a question many have asked, but im sitll not satisfied

my car has around abouts 19kwrw, im running a BMC pod, now, im sorta getting sick of the sucking noise i get everytime i accelorate, not realy annoying but sorta want to get rid of it, so i am thinking of putting my air box back in, is there realy that much difference between the two? like, does the pod give so much more kwrw that it should be there? or does it do bugger all else that its not worth the sucking noise?

cheers

HAH! Sif!!!

Thats the best part!

Stock air box is probley good for blocking off all heat from the engine and will not do any harm and stock air boxes are good for about 300kW's (GTR that is)

For a peace of mind you can up grade your panel filter to a high flow APexi or K&N one...

i actually have a pod and wanted to change it... however i recently found out the snorkel doesnt fit due to the intercooler piping... has anyone found a way to use the stock box with the cooler pipes there? anyone make a custom snorkel?

I would also like to know the answer to this question if anybody has a solution.

At the moment I have the standard airbox still in there minus the snorkel because my intercooler pipes are in the way of the snorkel.

I haven't been bothered putting the pod in yet because I aint gonna put it in unless i purchase a headsheild or something simular for it.

Fit an aftermarket plenum on which solves your over the radiator cooler pipe hitting snorkel problems, other wise buy one of those other cooler kits, unless you want to mould your own snorkel or melt some of the original....

There is a thread on here somewhere of a guy that modified the snorkel to fit the "over the fan" intercooler piping. There wasnt much to it, you just need to cut a piece out of the bottom and weld it back up when it fits over. It was in a Stagea if that helps your search :P i aint doing it!

thanks guys for the replies above.

I am still searching for the thread of the guy who modified his snorkel, there are lot of threads to look at but i will post it here if i find it :P

Hence why i didnt do it :P

Good Luck!

I seem to recall it being in one of those "what FMIC" threads. But not 100% sure.

I remember seeing the thread where someone modified their snorkle. Any bumper repair place or somewhere that can weld plasic should be able to help you mod it. My intercooler uses standard piping so I don't have this issue.

From what I've seen the R33/34 GTR airboxes are a better design than the R33 GTST ones so it might now hinder power quite the same. The path the air has to travel through it is much more direct. Here's a few pics to show the differences. Not too sure about the snorkle on the GTR though.

You can see how the AFM entrance is at 90degrees to the filter panel and the flat triangle face you see from the top is basically level with the base of the filter panel. This would block off a large amount of the filter surface. I've also shown a view from the end of the snorkle looking in. I figured I may as well post these as it saves anyone else having to take theirs off to have a good look.

you know what your right...its quite a narrow path isnt it...so whats the 34gtr snorkel look like inside?? any different...

    • It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about. Reliability of everything in a 34 drops MASSIVELY above the 300kw mark. Keeping everything going great at beyond that value will cost ten times the $. Clutches become shit, gearboxes (and engines/bottom ends) become consumable, traction becomes crap. The good news is looking legalish/actually being legal is slighly under the 300kw mark. I would make the assumption you want to ditch the stock plenum too and want to go a front facing unit of some description due to the cross flow. Do the bends on a return flow hurt? Not really. A couple of bends do make a difference but not nearly as much in a forced induction situation. Add 1psi of boost to overcome it. Nobody has ever gone and done a track session monitoring IAT then done a different session on a different intercooler and monitored IAT to see the difference here. All of the benefits here are likely in the "My engine is a forged consumable that I drive once a year because it needs a rebuild every year which takes 9 months of the year to complete" territory. It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about with this car.
    • By "reverse flow", do you mean "return flow"? Being the IC having a return pipe back behind the bumper reo, or similar? If so... I am currently making ~250 rwkW on a Neo at ~17-18 psi. With a return flow. There's nothing to indicate that it is costing me a lot of power at this level, and I would be surprised if I could not push it harder. True, I have not measured pressure drop across it or IAT changes, but the car does not seem upset about it in any way. I won't be bothering to look into it unless it starts giving trouble or doesn't respond to boost increases when I next put it on the dyno. FWIW, it was tuned with the boost controller off, so achieving ~15-16 psi on the wastegate spring alone, and it is noticeably quicker with the boost controller on and yielding a couple of extra pounds. Hence why I think it is doing OK. So, no, I would not arbitrarily say that return flows are restrictive. Yes, they are certainly restrictive if you're aiming for higher power levels. But I also think that the happy place for a street car is <300 rwkW anyway, so I'm not going to be aiming for power levels that would require me to change the inlet pipework. My car looks very stock, even though everything is different. The turbo and inlet pipes all look stock and run in the stock locations, The airbox looks stock (apart from the inlet being opened up). The turbo looks stock, because it's in the stock location, is the stock housings and can't really be seen anyway. It makes enough power to be good to drive, but won't raise eyebrows if I ever f**k up enough for the cops to lift the bonnet.
    • There is a guy who said he can weld me piping without having to cut chassis, maybe I do that ? Or do I just go reverse flow but isn’t reverse flow very limited once again?
    • I haven’t yet cut the chassis, maybe I switch to a reverse flow. I’ve got the Intercooler mounted as I already had it but not cut yet. Might have to speak to an engineer
