Hey everyone how are you all going?

i just have some questions to ask.. But first of all I’ll give you the scenario. i was driving and i was speeding 10km/h over the limit and i got done by the hand held and they asked me to pull over. (This is fine with me because i was speeding and I’m not going to go against that.)

However after that they go to me, your car sounded loud from far away, so they asked me to pop the bonnet. First of all said that my intercooler is illegal and that I’m not allowed to have one, then they said that it should be covered with a mesh.. i thought to myself well you just said i couldn’t have one, but you still need a mesh over one? How does that work.

Then he asked me where i installed my intercooler and i said at home, so he goes well your piping is illegal too and it should be heat wrapped.. i thought to myself well wait a second first off all that’s the cold side, secondly when did intercooler piping every need heat wrap?

After that he then told me that my pod filter was illegal and at high speeds it would wobble n could come off into the engine and cause problems, fair enough ill just put a stock box back in. then he said my exhaust sounds way to loud, but I’ve got the cat and muffler running through it?

After that he finally looked at my solenoid for my apexi avcr and then goes what are those wires? Then he said that’s illegal too. How is the wiring on a solenoid illegal?

So finally he wrote me up a report and it said the following..

Structure - comply with VSR'S re-metal pipes from front of body. Also needs a mesh/grill

lighting/wiring - to be checked - driver installed.

Other (engine) - engine must comply with ADR's no modifications to the exhaust system without a permit.

Finally he gave me 2 DAYS! To get over the pits yes! so this Thursday he gave me till, and i only got the yellow today ( Tuesday)

all in all i just want to know what is really illegal and what should i take off before i go over pits? i have a stock exhaust in my house so ill put that on, but i don’t have a stock box so could i please borrow one off some one? or anyone know where i can get one, also do i have to remove the intercooler or is that just complete lies about it being illegal?

Thanks every one, niran

Can borrow my airbox as long as I get it back the same day as i obviously wont be able to run my car while you have it.

Pretty sure you need the mesh but the intercooler itself shouldn't be illegal as long as its mounted properly, you didnt cut it any metal work etc when mounting it.

Check everything else on your car as well obviously.

Mate they can get you for anything. my mum had no water in her window wipers and got a yellow.

back in 2000 my mate Nick got a yellow becasue his glove box didn't close.

I think they make this stuff up :P

Of course they make this stuff up, you are kidding your self if you think otherwise...

Seems like they are fund raising at the moment as I've seen a whole heap of cars yellowed

you'd be surprised exactly how little some cops know. My brothers a cop and if i told him my intake plenum was where the exhaust came out he'd believe me.

Unfortunately we just have to cop it on the chin and take the car to the pits where some people know a little more and others still dont have a clue.

Greg89, yer i agree i know this cop didnt know much coz when did a cold side of an intercooler need heat wrap lol. but like you said what can we do, laws on there side try fight them or argue we just get more shit..

also i just relised from the day i brought this car, my reverse lights never worked.. ive checked the wiring in the boot and its all there, and i also have the bulbs in there.. i went under the car and there is a loose wire hanging from the bottom off the gear box. could this be the reverse wire socket?

thanks niran

as long as your pod is secure and your cooler has some mesh over it that will pass. Make sure all the other small things like your lights are all in good workin order. If you can try to hide the exposed wires or cover them up or something. All those things are pretty lame but also pretty easy to fix so not that bad. I got a yellow for a "wobbly driver seat and a worn clutch pedal" once, so dont put anything past them.

Get this, in 07 I had a car accident. Pedestrian walked in front of me, came through the windscreen, not my fault.

The police took the car to inspect it etc.

I get a letter in the mail 3 weeks later saying I hadn't taken my car over the pits and that I should send the plates back if i didnt intend to.

Im like WTF? They yellowed me for "crack in windscreen", there was a person sized hole in the windscreen, while it was in their inspection yard.

So stupid. I then had to argue with them because it was a couple months before I got it back from the Panelbeaters, and even then I was only allowed to drive it straight to the pits.

This was in a lancer btw.

Haha, sorry to hear u got stickered. I did on friday by highway patrol. They know a fair amount of stuff.

You have to realise hat stickers are just a way of cops inconvienincing you cos u drive an import. As long as ur car is road legal the pits will pass you.

So just have legal tread on tyres. secure pod. legal tint. degrease engine bay.

Fix what u can and take it to the pits. Book in cos theyare usually banked up by 2 weeks. they will give u an extention if u have fixed some of the list.

pods filters are alloud, i have passed the pits without mesh infront of my intercooler. (i have been yellowed 4times) as for me i am still waiting for approvale for my mods, its taking a life time here, i have had my yellow for about 3-4 months now and i have only driven my car about 1800ks. i have a stock 26 in my gts-t and when they had a look at my shiny painted engine bay, they were like, looks like there has been a lot of work done here. and bla bla bla.

its also good to ask the inspector whats right and whats not so next time you get pulled over and they say something about the mesh or the filter or what ever it is you can say that this and that are alloud.

I guess its coz of the up coming easter break, but I have seen a significant increase in the amount of cop cars (at least around my area) pulling people over.

Even my stockish (only mod noticeable is a cannon) car has being pulled over twice now in the last 3 days (& I have never being pulled over b4 for the last 1.5 years of owning it), 1st time by high way patrol for a license check & 2nd time got pulled over by undercover car coz they couldn't see my P-plates under the sun's glare so they pulled me over to see if I had my P-pates up? :P

Never heard of this mesh in front of cooler bullshit, my 32 passed without it and neither of my cars have mesh in front of the cooler and have never done so. Pod filter does need to be secured properly, I cut two brackets out of some 1.2mm ally sheet and bolt it to 2 of the holes that the stock airbox bolted to.

Just sounds like you got a cock, address what you can on the list and anything that you think is bullshit, bring up with the pit inspector.

Yeah you just got unlucky bud, you don't need mesh on the intercooler nor heat wrap on the piping. Chances are your exhaust isn't even too loud, reverse lights you will need to check though. Just make sure everything works, all your windows, windscreen washers/wipers, make sure there is water in your washer bottle, parkers, headlights, high beams, brake lights etc. Just common sense things you know.

Shouldn't be anything wrong with the front mount, and it wouldn't need to be heat wrapped. I've never been told to cover mine with mesh in about the 10 times I've been through the pits.

Can't picture whats wrong with it without seeing it, but just hide the wiring as best you can, tape it down if you have to.

You can't get permits for exhausts any more, they are either too loud or they're not.

Unluckily you got a cop who shouldn't be a cop.

Hey every one

thank you all so much for your help and your support it scares me that even the people we ask to obey the law still use to power to their pleasing.

Stayed up all night last night worked on car from 11pm-8am then slept for 3 hours now I’m back at it. Reason I’m trying to get it all done so quick is because i also have an AHG day this Saturday, so at least try getting it off or trying get it extended.

I agree the cop wasn’t too fair on his decisions’ and like all off you said i just got unlucky.

I’ve removed the exhaust and put a stock one, I mounted the pod secure with a bracket, Intercooler piping i just secures that to some more bolts along its path and engine bay, also removed my dvd player, Only thing left is the reverse lights which im still trying to get to work.. but besides that it’s just really go to pits and hope i pass

Thanks for all the help

    • I thought I'd do a write up on an auto transmission fluid change for a the nissan 7 speed Automatic. At some stage the genius engineers decided that the fluid in the trans was "for the life of the transmission", (which seems kind of self supporting to me) and removed the dip stick and fill tube (funnily enough there is still a casting for it). Anyway, for this job you do need 2 specialist tools in addition to regular hand tools, jack and good chassis stands. You need a way to pump fluid up to the transmission; I got one of these but there are plenty of other options: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/364584087070 Don't trust the generic listing though, it does not come with the required adapter for the Nissan 7 Speed. You need one of these, can't do the job without it: https://navarapart.com.au/product/genuine-nissan-patrol-y62-d23-np300-navara-re7-dipstick-fill-connector1 You need a heap of compatible transmission oil. Could be Nissan, could be anything else rated for Nissan Matic S. You need at least 10 litres, I had 15 to give it a better flush... Also, you need some biiig oil catch trays, at least one of these, or bigger if possible (volume was fine, size was very marginal): https://autobarn.com.au/ab/Autobarn-Category/Tools-%26-Garage/Specialty-Tools/Oil-Service/Garage-Tough-Oil-Drain-Pan-Black-16L---GT1068/p/TO03191 Finally, a measuring jug is very useful if your pump does not have volumes marked on it, I got a 6l one: https://www.repco.com.au/oils-fluids/fluid-accessories/measuring-jugs/penrite-measuring-jug-6l-pmj006/p/A5322648 Oh, and gloves.....this stuff is horrible (not as bad as diff oil, but getting there) ....First, jack up your car.....
    • So I mentioned the apprentice, @LachyK helped take the bonnet off. We just undid the nuts on the hinges and unclipped the gas struts, then pulled the bonnet back a little as the front was catching on the front bar.  I had a good look at everything today and have removed the rams, repaired/reset the hinges and bolted it back together like it never happened. I'll do a separate write up on the repair, and I also removed the poppers from the Fuga today too to save grief down the road.....as said above it is at least $5k to repair retail. I'm also happier about my ability to prepare a race car, and less happy about Nis-nault's engineering (I can hear @GTSBoy sAfrican Americaning) because the top hose of the radiator didn't slip off.......it snapped clean off. By practice I put the hose clamp hard up against the flare on a neck to make it least likely to ever move (thanks @Neil!). I guess that puts a little more pressure on the end of the pipe as it is further away from the rad, but still, that is pretty shit. I've put it back on for now as there was a fair bit of neck still there, but obviously there is no lip on the neck any more so I don't think I'll track it again until I have a new rad. Speaking of which....more research required. It looks like Koyo makes a standard size radiator in ally which I'll grab in the meantime, but I really want something thicker so might have to go custom in the medium term (ouch) Coolant still needs a refill and I have the pressure tester on it over night, but other than a wash down of the engine bay it seems alright. And @MBS206 noted something noisy on the front of the engine and I think I agree....time for a new accessory belt and tensioners I think.
    • our good friends at nismo make a diff for it, I have one (and a spare housing to put the centre in) on the way. https://www.nismo.co.jp/products/web_catalogue/lsd/mechanical_lsd_v37.html AMS also make a helical one, but I prefer mechanical for track use in 2wd (I do run a quaife in the front, but not rear of the R32)
    • What are we supposed to be seeing in the photo of the steering angle sensor? The outer housing doesn't turn, right? All the action is on the inside. The real test here is whether or not your car has had the steering put back together by a butcher. When the steering is centred (and we're not caring about the wheel too much here, we're talking about the front wheels, parallel, facing front) then you should have an absolutely even number of turns from centre to left lock and centre to right lock. If there is any difference at all then perhaps the thing has been put back together wrongly, either the steering wheel put on one spline (or more!) off, and the alignment bodged to straighteb the wheel, or the opposite where something silly was done underneath and the wheel put back on crooked to compensate. Nut there isn't actually much evidence that you have such a problem anyway. It is something you can easily measure and test for to find out though. My money is still on the HICAS CU not driving the PS solenoid with the proper PWM signal required to lighten the load at lower speed. If it were me, I would be putting either a multimeter or oscilloscope onto the solenoid terminals and taking it for a drive, looking for the voltage to change. The PWM signal is 0v, 12V, 0V, 12v with ...obviously...modulated pulse width. You should see that as an average voltage somewhere between 0V and 12V, and it should vary with speed. An handheld oscilloscope would be the better tool for this, because they are definitely good enough but there's no telling if any cheap shit multimeter that people have lying around are good enough. You can also directly interfere with the solenoid. If you wire up a little voltage divider with variable resistor on it, and hook the PS solenoid direct to 12V through that, you can manually adjust the voltage to the solenoid and you should be able to make it go ligheter and heavier. If you cannot, then the problem is either the solenoid itself dead, or your description of the steering being "tight" (which I have just been assuming you mean "heavy") could be that you have a mechanical problem in the steering and there is heaps of resistance to movement.
    • Little update  I have shimmed the solenoid on the rack today following Keep it Reets video on YouTube. However my steering is still tight. I have this showing on Nisscan, my steering angle sensor was the closest to 0 degrees (I could get it to 0 degrees by small little tweaks, but the angle was way off centre? I can't figure this out for the life of me. I get no faults through Nisscan.
