This is my current setup at 445RWHP @ 20PSI:

Block:

Block O-Ringed, Line bored, Bored to 87mm and torque plate honed

This setup used to have a T04Z. It was bulk power but was not really useable for street duties or light track which is why I sold it off last year.

Then I got the 2860R-5's. It has better response than the T04Z but still not really suitable for my liking.

I really want the power/response setup and I am stuck for a choice.

I am looking for close to stock turbo response but with a lot more power. I am used to the power of the T04Z (mine was doing 575RWHP) but I am hoping someone out there has a turbo setup that provides over 450RWHP but has close to stock response.

This might be a long shot but any opinions are welcome. You can bag me out for not keeping the T04Z or wanting to ditch the 2860R-5's :P

In case this makes a difference I don't really have a budget. However of course I only want to spend on what is proven and not a waste of money (I have done that too many times in the past) :P

Oh, also I only want to stick to the twin low mount setup.

Hard to tell what you're after as you want stock like response with 450rwhp and low mount twins, you've already got what most would consider a perfect setup :P

X-Speed told me (last year in an email) they can tune GT-SS's to 400RWKW (which would be awesome)... GT-SS's = GT2860-7's.

I might go down that path if I hear of alot more people around SAU land that have a similar setup with -7's and doing around 400RWKW's!!!

My current turbo setup is awesome for bulk power. But my car is used on the freeways and streets of perth so response is more important to me than outright top end power.

I would have just kept the T04z coz that made me shit my pants the first time I put the foot down!!!!!

Maybe one day when I have enough funds I WILL build a drag monster with bulk skid power!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GT-SS/-7's wont make 400kw without some giggle gas, they just cant flow the air for that ~320kw tops.

The turbos you have now are the ones you would be told to get for the power you are after. if you want more response you need to look at increasing displacement.

Good point about the cams.

If I upgrade to 2.8, will that be more suitable for the cams? (in your opinion).

They cartridge and bearing assembly is Garrett specifications just like HKS.

The turbine wheel and compressor wheel on any ball bearing turbo that need to be rebuilt tends to cause some housing damage which will require slightly larger internals be used.

Garrett internals can then be used or even HKS for that matter and the turbo can be serviced by anyone capable like Garrett, Precision, GCG, MTQ etc.

The benefits of the current wheel types are for response with the compressor setup just a little smaller than the -5 and the turbine having a different wheel design but the same size.

If there was a Garrett bolt on option in between the -5 and -7 it would be perfect and much cheaper given the current exchange rate though Garrett work backwards and provide what we don't need not what we do. We just adapt :P

Stick with the -5's and go the 2.8. Have a search for Gav's dyno sheet (built by XSpeed) and take a look at the respone whilst still making 550+rwhp.

I've got a similar setup but using the 2530's, now tuned for response over outright hp. My dyno sheet below.

Hmm if I were in your position when you wanted the same power with less lag I would have looked into shifting to an RB30, I had the distinct pleasure of going for a ride in an R33 GTR with a RIPS RB30+T04Z combination and the thing was mental from everywhere. It'd crush a stock turbo RB26DETT setup basically from idle up.

There's a place in Sydney that have an R34 with 2.6L, GTSS and 355rwkw. Lots and lots of money spent on the head, but i dont know 100% if the turbos are stock or if they've been modified

I reckon GT-SS would choke the 2.8's power potential...if I spent all that money on the 2.8 id want some decent power out of it..nothing short of 400, which would easily be achievable without excess lag given the extra displacement. -5's on my 2.6 arent even laggy really...if you man up and learn how to drive it its perfect....-5's all the way!

Purely a theoretical question because I'm not planning on changing turbos... anytime soon :ninja:

back on topic, I would listen to what Ash said about cams... your cams would be setup for making peak power well over 6000rpm... they have massive overlap

    • Not sure the US can import anything other than the C34 Stagea's, but if you can and you need to to tow, DO NOT under any circumstances get an M35 Stagea. If it is just as a family car and your country/state allows it, absolutely and definitely get an M35 (3.5L if possible as it is effectively a 350Z) over a C34.

    • Well, that's kinda the point. The calipers might interfere with the inside of the barrels 16" rims are only about 14" inside the barrels, which is ~350mm, and 334mm rotors only leave about 8mm outboard for the caliper before you get to 350, And.... that;s not gunna be enough. If the rims have a larger ID than that, you might sneak it in. I'd be putting a measuring stick inside the wheel and eyeballing the extra required for the caliper outboard of the rotor before committing to bolting it all on.
    • OK, so again it has been a bit of a break but it was around researching what had been done since I didn't have access to Neil's records and not everything is obvious without pulling stuff apart.
