N1 Turbos Laggy

Recommended Posts

hi all,

I recently had a PFC installed and retuned on my 32 GTR. Was previously running an eManage making 285rwkw and was getting around 420km per tank city driving.

With the PFC install the tuner leaned the tune out a little and got 311rwkw but now im seeing 320-340km per tank with very similar driving patterns.

Another situation im baffled with is the lag. Im getting full boost by 4600rpm with N1 turbos :) . Mods include 3.5Inch exhaust from front pipes back (std dumps), std internals, std cams, cam gears, Sard FPR.

Can anyone suggest some reasons why boost is coming on so late and fuel consumption is so crap now.

thanks heaps

in these situations you have to ask.. what changed.

From your description the only thing that changed was tune and possibly cam gears.

therefore unless (by sheer coincidence) your car developed a new problem right when the tuner had it, it must be the tune.

Did you get full dyno graphs before vs after including one showing AFR?

And btw your original power and consumption was very good for the mods you have, so I wonder what you were looking for in going PFC.

Was it laggy before the ECU Change?

If so, its either actuators need upgrading/modifiying to hold shut

Or

They might be N1's with a .63 rear on each, if so then 4600 is as good as it'll get.

Otherwise the economy - probably related to the tune

i changed to the PFC as im going to slowly increase the number of mods to the engine and was told the PFC is a better platform to do this. I got a good change over price too.

the car was laggy before as well. I will post up dyno graphs. The N1s are the factory fitted turbos on my car, its a genuine Nismo 32GTR so not too sure of the exhaust size.

Im thinking of fitting some Tomei Type A cams and dump pipes then getting a retune. what you think?

thanks for the advice so far.

How is your boost curve?

Does it hit eg 14psi then slowly ramp up to eg 20psi, or does it bang up to eg 20psi and hold all the way until redline. You really need to know this first before anything else.

Factory R32 N1 turbos are fairly lagy so thats about right, they are old design non ball bearing turbo...

Agreed :) Im not sure of the requirements/how/what setup they came on in the .63 either.

But ye, R32 N1's are the pits, hence R33s are better, and R34 N1's are the response monster for around the same power

Perhaps some more playing with the cam gears as if its stock housing N1's thats still a bit poor.

IMO cams wont give you much vs the $$$ you'll spend if at all.

  • 3 weeks later...

hi mate did you get anywhere with this?

I run the same turbos unfortunately and they are pretty bad. but with cam gears set right and a good tune you should be able to bring the boost on a bit sooner, mine is about 4000 for full boost which is still noticeable lag.

only real concern with your setup would the standard dumps. the rest of your exhaust is good but the standard 32 dumps are woeful and would not be helping at all.

    • I did say "2x Magnaflows" then referred to a Varex. So to un-confuse that, my rear muffler is hot-swappable with a Varex. When I had a RB Turbo, I had the 2x Magnaflows, then went LS and though "Oh that's way too loud" and ordered a Varex. A mid muffler will definitely help a lot, even if straight through. SP Mufflers can make anything as big or as small as possible, which will help even more. Looking at my own exhaust I could make the muffler twice as long if I wanted to. Or you could go crazy and get 2x mufflers from SP and full every remaining space with muffling. In my experience closing the Varex makes the car run VERY rich (obviously). I'd say adding a muffler *will* affect things, on a technical, physics level, but I don't think you'd need a retune as the actual effect would be the car running a *tiny* bit richer due to more restriction, on a strictly physics level, but you kind of don't have any option if you want the car to make less sound.
    • I must have read 100 DIY's and watched 200 DIY Youtube videos with most people saying just grab a new cover and, well, despite my normal aproach to these things (replace it all!!) I didn't get a cover. I don't know why I didn't, I'd already ordered a bunch of bits from FCP and it would have made perfect sense to put that in the order.  Anyway, I'm not getting OEM as its just crazy money, even from the states its 900 ish delivered. So, I got an OE Elring one, same as they sell at FCP but local so I can get this fixed this week. Our X5 is waiting for a new diff so we find ourselves in a common scenario of having 2 broken BMW's on the driveway! 🤣
    • Big thing is available inputs for sensors and not having to run multiple expander boxes and software packages for different things why motec is up there. The link ecu and an aim pdm32 was a combination I looked at early on so get ecu, dash and pdm in one go. Aim logging software is pretty good and has all the tracks I will ever drive. Having logging setup with tracks already available is a big thing for myself so can click drop down and go. Thing that I keep seeing is the support what's needed and having a package that people in the know are familiar with as learning a new platform is time consuming.    Got a few boxes that arrived with bits while I was away so hopefully will fit a few sensors and make a start on the dump pipe today. Going to be interesting fitting a 3.5 inch exhaust on this and keeping it above the chassis rails.
    • Negative Ghost Rider, the pattern is full
    • Chasing a R32 GTR dash pad, must be in good condition, no broken tabs, no holes and preferably no bubbles.   Thanks
