ok so im a chick n i need some help please i have a pretty worked 13 second skyline...i got pulled over n im gettin done for my front mount, oil catch can, exhaust and pod filter. What he didnt see was my haltech comp hiding under my dash....so im over the whole going fast thing any way i was wondering what is the easiest way to make my car r33 gtst as standard as possible.....

front mount??

catch can???

pod filter????

exhaust, find someone with a stock one in their backyard and borrow it :D

as for the haltech i guess you just hope they dont physically check the ecu, there arent any stickers anywhere that would get them suspicious?

It would be easier to get your car passed the emissions test and engineered. You don't need to change parts then. Its better. Nothing better then being pulled over and handing over your paper work with a big f**k YOU, cop this one sideways.

  • 5 weeks later...

You can't high mount turbo. You need to get Stock manifold, Stock turbo, Stock exhaust, Stock Air box with intake pipe and run breather into it. With the ECU system you might be able to get away by tunning to close to stock emission level. Its going to need lot of work to pass EPA.

Goto www.epa.vic.gov.au and read through their modification guids.

I'll think you will find the EPA makes no mention of manifolds. :)

You can actually high mount a stock turbo, same as an aftermarket low mount manifold.

I passed with a low mount non-factory manifold.

Although, he has an aftermarket turbo, so thats fairly unlikely to pass - i agree.

Fk laws between states are shithouse

Such little consistency

Yeah in NSW we don't have the "one intake mod" law. if you have any mod to the intake you have to get it engineered.

So any R33 gtst with a front mount can get done for emissions or even a car with just a pod.

But we get free emissions tests so there is no excuse i guess.

A bit offtopic, but you guys in Aussie get so reamed compared to us here in NZ.

Ive got a 300kw engine in a car that originally had around 100 and have little problems getting a normalwarrant of fitness done every 6 months.

I hope it doesnt turn out like that here.

X2. Theyre pretty good here. Only thing really is noise and external vented gates.

OT, is 13 seconds what we call a 'worked' Skyline now? If so, my Stock turbo Skyline is HELLA worked!

Hang on, whats wrong with the po po seeing the Haltech ecu?

Is it illegal to have a piggy back or any aftermarket ecu for that matter?

talk to matt at hitman injection tuning. he can tune it to pass through emissions testing - likes haltech too - and has access to people who can make the catch can etc legally installed ie plumb back. also ask him who can do an engineer's report for the mods. my report was $600 plus $1000 for the tune - bugger all compared to the cost of making it stock all over again and having stock performance.

In NSW - you need to get tested

In Vic - its simply illegal all the time (effort to get it tested/legal in vic borders on the impossible for the common man)

I was under the impression that in NSW, a standalone ECU is never 'legal', even if you get it emissions tested, due to the fact you can alter the tune/ mixtures at any time. (Potentially making your emissions test irrelevant.)

Also, from what I understand, an engineering certificate wont get you off a defect notice for an exposed pod filter/ atmospheric BOV/ vented catch can/ exhaust too loud as they are strictly non ADR compliant. (and cannot be made compliant)

I may be wrong here, feel free to correct me!

(Not a stab at you Guilt-toy, just throwing a spanner in the works)

engineers report is not the do all end all anyway. they can still refuse something if they see a problem with it. and like said. that turbo instantly got you up sh*t creek.

ecu must be standard. If they even suspect your ecu is tampered with (remapped) and cannot prove anything they can (and do) request a full report from nissan to certify it's settings $$$$$.

anything that can be altered ie:

coilovers (eng cert and modification making them unable to travel lower than legal height under full loaded car.)

boost controller (same deal. much more involved as lowest level of boost and highest level would have to be emissions tested and the unit also locked so that it cannot exceed engineered limits.)

you can have any modifcation you want so long as it's engineered, emissions tested and modified in a way that it can not be altered/programmed any different to what your certificate states.

    • Check the injectors flow evenly, and are actually flowing what you and the ECU think they should be flowing. If it's starting up on starter fluid, you have a fuel issue. Is it possible under cranking your fuel pump is turning off?   The harness you replaced, is that the whole engine harness? Do yourself a test, and drop the old harness on and plug it into the Z32 ECU. It's possible they've wired things different. From memory S1 to S2 is different in RB25 and you may have a wrong loom
    • I haven’t pulled the injectors to watch them spray yet but they are clicking from the cas and all of the spark plugs are wet with fuel. I’ve thought the cylinders were being flooded from the beginning and was hoping fuel pressure would fix it. Tonight I am going to pull the rail and watch the injectors spray. Don’t know how to test/diagnose if the plugs are firing in correct sequence but that should be a timing thing and as far as timing goes my car still has the half moon for the cas can only install it 1 way. And my mechanical timing is 100% correct I posted photos above. Confirmed with the balancer on and off.
    • I checked spark on all cylinders and they all visually have spark with the plug pulled and grounded, but plug 1 is the only one that fouled. This was a running swap that blew up and was rebuilt by a machine shop, put a new wiring specialties harness and did all gaskets, studs, and bolts while it was out.  compression is 135-150 across all cylinders. Aside from that from my understanding with the z32 ecu and maf the car should start regardless. The wiring for TPS and the dual 02 sensor/ dual knock sensor stuff shouldn’t actually stop the car from starting or even running well, (just slightly rich)  they just give fault codes. Car supposedly is supposed to start as long as you have z32 afm and ecu with the nistune base map and that’s info coming from a well known and trusted tuner who does a lot with SR/RB (Rsenthalpy). After more trouble shooting today where I’m at right now is that the cas is sending signal to the injectors they click while spinning the rotor, Fuel pressure is now set at 43psi, all cylinders have good compression and all of the plugs looked great (just wet with fuel) except for cylinder 1 which was very black (cylinder 1 has 150psi compression). all of the coils generate spark if pulled out and grounded out on the head. On the fuel pump car just pops into the exhaust. On starting fluid car will fire off. Hard to tell if all cylinders are firing off but definitley a couple. sounds like all of them but it’s only for 3-5 seconds hard to tell.
    • Final update!!! Got the front bar fitted and sprayed and all sorted now. My cutouts worked great and the indicators aren’t just falling off. 😂
