Hey Guys,

Heres the story.

Changed the motor in the r33 and replaced it with a S2 motor, using the s1 coil packs and wiring harness.

Now under load and above 4000rpm it is missing and popping quite a bit. The s1 coil packs which are being used were working perfectly fine before the motor change.

I have changed plugs with new NGK Bcpr6es gapped at 1.1 . Beforehand it was missing at all rev range, now its just missing above 4000rpm.

Boost gauge is showing about 0.4 - 0.5 bar, HOWEVER, the turbo seems to be sounding like it is spooling quite a lot more than before the motor change. (Alot more whistle).

Possible causes is that I have hooked up the vacuum lines wrong? (The s2 motor has some different vac setup). But there is no hunting at idle and its not running rich?

Also, there is a really small vac hose at the rear of the inlet manifold, I cannot find where this once went?? Its about a 3-4mm diameter. Could this be the cause and if so, where does it go lol Im shocking..

I know alot of you will say coilpacks, based on what the search has showed me. But I would like to tackle some other areas first before i go fork out for some splitfires!!

Any help would be muchly appreciated :)

u tried taping the coils up with electrical tape? that stops sparks escaping out of small hairline cracks on ur coils at high rpms.my series 1 always used to do that, i tape it up,,redline beautifully.either that or try using series 2 coil packs coz theyre different,,

good luck chuck

cheers

Its a S2 engine, using the S1 coilpacks and S1 wiring/ecu etc.

Will try the tape i think. But the turbo noise is waaay different than beforehand.

Are S1 and S2 turbos different at all?

Try gapping the plugs at 0.8mm most Skylines will miss running standard coils with a gap of 1.1.

I believe that that the series 2 turbo's are different using different inlet and exhaust wheels.

Also if it sounds like its running lots of boost on the standard ecu it could be hitting boost cut.

THIS.

Plugs need to have 0.8mm gap.

My factory standard S2 was missing above 5000 on factory boost (low-hi mode = 5-7psi)

changed to BCP6RES-8 (BCP6RES-11 = 1.1mm gap)

if you cant find BCP6RES-8, just look for BCP6RES, pull it out of the box and either measure or compare it to a -11.

provided your coil packs and leads are good, there's no other reason why it'd be missing above 4000rpm.

People told me all sorts of things like new coil packs ($800 for splitfires?), fuel cut etc.

changed to a set of six $6.00 BCP6RES spark plugs and problem magically solved.

also dont but platinums or iridiums, plain copper is fine for mildly modded engines provided you change them every 10,000kms or so.

    • haha don't worry I'm sue you've got more fun ahead buying a 30 year old turbo car....but at least you are in the right place to ask
    • some days eh? The keyless entry and interior light on/off with the key will be controlled by the Body Control Module, but I'm not certain where that is or what it looks like (you might get lucky with a search to get a part#, which could be printed on it). I'd start at the A pillar/ Under dash/kick panel on the driver's side
    • It might be hit and miss, but Nissan Genuine Parts and Pitworks are not the same thing, although both are available from Nissan Dealers with Nissan Part Numbers. Nissan Genuine Parts are the OEM stuff, Pitworks are their attempt to get people back from generic parts makers
    • I did end up getting it sorted, as GTSBoy said, there was a corroded connection and wire that needed to be replaced. I ended up taking out the light assembly, giving everything a good clean and re-soldered the old joints, and it came out good.
    • Wow, thanks for your help guys 🙏. I really appreciate it. Thanks @Rezz, if i fail finding any new or used, full or partial set of original Stage carpets i will come back to you for sure 😉 Explenation is right there, i just missed it 🤦‍♂️. Thanks for pointing out. @soviet_merlin in the meantime, I received a reply from nengun, and i quote: "Thanks for your message and interest in Nengun. KG4900 is for the full set of floor mats, while KG4911 is only the Driver's Floor Mat. FR, RH means Front Right Hand Side. All the Full Set options are now discontinued. However, the Driver's Floor Mat options are still available according to the latest information available to us. We do not know what the differences would be, but if you only want the one mat, we can certainly see what we can find out for you". Interesting. It seems they still have some "new old stock" that Duncan mentioned 🤔. I wonder if they can provide any photos......And i also just realized that amayama have G4900 sets. I'm tempted too.
