I'm interested in Mobil's synthetic motorbike oils and how they differ from their car engine intended synthetic oils .

This is what they have to say to the bike people who want to know the differences .

In short the additive pack is different to suit common engine/gearbox requirements and the wet plate clutch .

Assuming that some of the V8 Supercar teams ran this oil it must be pretty hardy stuff which it would have to be anyway in a hard worked sport bike engine .

I'm just curious to know what people think of running this 4T 10W40 or 15W50 in a road car engine .

The 15W50 numbers don't worry me so much because previous research leads me to believe that the W as in 15W is a cold pouring/cold cranking winter index not a viscosity rating number .

What does interest me about these 4T bike oils is the claimed lower friction modifier content which I take to mean they have to do the job standing on their own feet and without additives that can throw the towl in at high temperatures and loadings .

I know that many bike engines use roller crankshaft bearings but not all of them .

Can anyone that knows anything about V8 race engines offer any info about oils and if possible synthetic ones ?

An interesting snipped I was told is that Royal Purple competition oils are a bit more biased towards alcohol or exotic fueled engines and it makes me wonder what the V8's are running now they're burning a variation of E85 .

The oil is merely tailored for its purpose, which seems like common sense and therefore not that interesting.

Bike oil - cant use FMs because of wet clutch, so its left out and economy is worse because of that

Car oil - can use FMs because no wet clutch, so economy is better

also another thing to consider, bike engine rotating assembly has a lot less mass than your averidge 6cyl crank, rods and pistons. and yes they do rev a lot higher so they have higher piston speed but with less mass so the oil demands are less.

I have a CBR600R and the oil that comes out of it after 5000k's looks like oil that comes out of my RB at 1000k's

There are a couple of guys that have run bike oil in there car engines - me included. the Motul stuff I used last time was 10w40 synthetic. there were no adverse effects, the oil looked the same when it came out as it usually does. the main reason i did it was i forgot to buy oil and my bike oil was there.

Mobil used to have a coloured lid code for their oil, but nobody understood it. Red, blue, gold etc it went something like:

• Gold caps for Mobil 1 Extended Performance

• Silver caps for our Mobil 1 products

• Green caps for Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy

• Black caps for Mobil 1 Racing oils, Mobil 1 motorcycle oils and Mobil Clean High Mileage

• Blue caps for Mobil Clean 7500 and

• Red caps for Mobil Clean 5000

They are now [or last I saw] actually labelling their oils.

I've used the black and the gold in my bike and had no problems. I've used the gold in my Skyline and its OK.........would be nice if it was cheaper though!!

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!

    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
