Hello all,

My R34 GT has been in storage for the last few months. Have just bought it out to start cleaning it up and doing some work on it.

Battery was dead which is to be expected... Started it up with jumpers and left it to run for a good 20 minutes.

However the main problem is there appears to be a grinding sound coming from the engine bay. (sounds like a mix of grinding and a sort of hissing noise you get with a small high pressure leaky pipe)..

No engine check lights.. reset the ECU and still no check lights... Temps and oil all seem fine...

The sound itself seems to be coming from the Air intake rather than the engine itself. You can put your ear right next to the pod filter I have installed and hear it quite clearly. However when moving your ear upto the engine everything sounds reasonably fine..

Any ideas what it could be?.. From what I can tell it has to be echoing down from the air intake...

hissing sound could simply be your induction sound from the pod filter.. Don't know about the grinding sound.

I have tried taking the pod filter off and just chucking a piece of cheese cloth in front of the intake.. Still get the same noise..

- also tried the above before the intake sensor.. Same

Has to be coming from further up

does it change at all when you rev it or put it under load? i have a hissing sound coming from mine. happend when i put the turbo on and since after taking it off is still there. not sure what it is but theories are the injector O rings (one of them) might have a crack or something, or possibly the gasket for the intake plenum.

as for the grinding noise, what part of the motor is it coming from?

Depending on how long you left it, oil can sometimes separate/settle. Give it a change along with your oil filter.

If you are going to store a car for long amounts of time it is highly recommended to change all fluids before storing it.

    • First time visitor and currently getting ready to start work on my HK Premier.  Its all stock, 186 with 3 on the tree.  The only mod i have right now is extractors.  I am hoping to get some guidance on slightly modifying the engine to bring a little more power. Just going for a nice, comfortable cruiser.  The car is very straight, however i have been out of the country for 20 years and its been gathering dust at a family farm.  Will be doing quite a bit of body work to cut out some small rust areas (frnt quarter panels and a few other small bits) and fix up the paint.  Will be redoing the interior (its currently black and the seats are in real need of recovering and respringing the driver side (its front bench seat).  The dash needs a little TLC, but no real damage.  As my heater has degraded I am considering fitting something after-market that will be both heater/AC (recommendations here are always welcome). Wanting something discrete that will allow me to use the same controls and not be obvious once inside the car.   For the engine, i have been told i could consider upgrading my cam (imagine i would need a new head as well) and putting a new carby (currently the original stromberg).  However not sure what is going to be the best route.  Would certainly welcome any comments/suggestions.  As  a final step I am looking at changing the wheels. Current hubcaps are in dire need of refurbishment or replacement (imagine its a bit like hens teeth).  Thinking of some clean/classic looking mags (7-inch should be more than enough - not going for a large change in look).  Welcome any comments/advice and of course any questions.
    • I got the ARC M079 due to the space constraint.  Been running mint for the last 3 years.  Plazmaman also seems like a really solid choice but not used myself.    Hunt around for a better price but this is what I have - https://www.rhdjapan.com/arc-brazing-intercooler-smic-m079-bnr32.html
    • Wanted to follow up on this. Did you end up getting the M073? Still deciding on what to get between nismo m073-79 and plazaman.
    • I was just watching these boys up in QLD AWD'ing their S13 too.
    • Por que no los dos? At least my euro brawler is reliable - unlike the JDMs I've had. Sheraaz you look familiar, did you ever come to an SAU VIC meet aaaaaages ago?
