Just installed a S-AFC II on my r33 gts-t, everything was ok except for the knock sensor. I followed the instructions correctly as far as i know and everything seems to read ok except for the knock sensor, it always sits on 0. I've tried both knock sensors on the ECU and i get the same result. Could it be that my knock sensors are stuffed? or have i just installed it wrong. Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

what sort of knock readings do you get - and does anyone know what constitutes a knock?

I get 0 - 10 on a normal day and up to 20 on a hot day. I know the scale goes up to 200 on the safcII, so these can't be too bad. Would it be like to Power FC scale where above 60 means you are knocking?

Bad readings are when your talking 50+ over the IDLE figure. So if your getting say 20, and its a hot day, and you get 100 (via peak hold) after a WOT blast, then you have knocking. If the peak is only a lil more, then there is nothing to worry about.

Also dw about the idle figures as they rise with temp. NFI why tho. But the engine isnt knocking.

I just got mine installed today and i've just been for a drive and the knock goes upto about 10 which seems to be normal. But it takes quite a while for it to move though. I was driving a good 15mins before it moved off 0 on throttle.

However when i was at idle the knock would always read a higher value of 15-20.

Mine was installed today too and so far the highest I've seen is 9 at idle... During a WOT blast it sits on zero?

I've done the knk set a few times but it makes no diff?

Out of curiousity, what are everyones raw knock levels in the knk set menu? (ie 1550, and 3650)

Thanks

My knock in the knk set was about 50-60 when i first started the car then after driving it for a while it was upto about 70-90 odd.

what do u mean a WOT blast? In the monitoring menu on acceleration mine sat on 0 for a little while then it started to read figures. But the whole time it was working when the car was idle. Im sure its setup right, perhaps the engine needs to be at operation temp before it gives figures?

Who thought a knock sensor could be so confusing :D

WOT blast = Wide Open Throttle blast.

My knk set readings are pretty much identical: 50-60 to start with, 80-90 after a thrash.

At idle mines the same, between 4 and 10. But when flooring it, 0 all the way to redline? I was only driving for about 30 mins though... I will try it again tomorrow in the heat I guess...

At least I know it's not my crazy switch mod hey... :D

First of all, guys you shouldnt get huge numbers like 80 while idling. Otherwise your calibration is wrong. Go to www.apexi-usa.com to get the SAFC II manual! Btw u need the jap language pack, even tho there is no jap in the PDF? lol

Anyways, the higest ive seen is 20 at idle, but at cruising speeds, its zero which is most important. After a WOT blast i might get 25 or so, which indicates 25 - 20 = 5 knock counts during the WOT blast. Thats nothign to worry about. If its like 80 after the WOT blast, then pinging is at hand!

yep - me the same.

- raw figures are 50 - 60.

- idling sits on 0 - 10 on a cool day and maybe 10 - 25 on a 35 degree day.

- when accelerating, car is breathing in cool air from outside the engine bay and comes down to 0 (maybe 10 on a hot day)

it would be good though to speak to apexi and ask for some guidance on what level a knock is (ie 50 or 100?)

I know that Access Auto's in Vic is Apexi's Australian distributor and they have technicians that you can talk to if you bought the product in Australia (ie not imported from japan).

    • Here's the chart for fuel pressure vs. current draw, assuming your base fuel pressure is 3 bar and you run like 0.5bar boost on WOT, you should only momentarily hit 9amps here and there. (Ignore my prev post, I cannot read a chart these days it seems)
    • Those comp test results are not hideous. Whether they are accurate or not (ie, when that comp tester says 140 psi, is the real pressure120, 140 or 160?) is unknown to us. The state of the battery used to crank it over is unknown, etc etc. Many people around here would say that the absolute values and the spread are perfectly fine to just add boost and keep going. I personally would be happier with a narrower spread than that, but even the diff between 125 and 145 is not terrible. That one cylinder at 125 though, has probably copped some damage relative to the others. You should inspect the valves seeing as you've got it open. Do you know how to measure installed ring gaps? That, and an inspection of the rings themselves, is how you will determine whether they need to be replaced. If you're not good to do these things, take the block and the pistons and rings to a shop that is, and ask them for the go/no-go on them. Do the bores need a hone at all? If so, you might well be justified in getting some different pistons in order to get away from the ring supply problem. Whether you're happy to spend a lot more money right now, on more gear, rather than less money, but an amount that looks stupid given that you will only get a handful of rings in exchange for that money, is for you to decide.

    • Ok so i would love some advice here please, i purchased an R33 a few months back and its had a few mods done to the engine, its an RB25det running a Master ECU, 1200cc injectors, bigger turbo, oil cooler, oil filter relocation kit, Spool H-beam rods, acl/ross pistons. When i removed the motor from the vehicle (as its getting a respray) i thought i would compression test it and these are the following results. Cylinder 1-145psi, Cylinder 2-143psi, Cylinder 3-125psi, Cylinder 4-145psi, Cylinder 5-140psi, Cylinder 6-135psi this test was done with the motor on the ground and powering up the starter motor. I dropped the sump and found broken oil squirters on cylinder 3,5 and 6. I was told my rings are probably worn so i stripped the motor completely to get a new set of rings for it. The trouble is no one has these rings anywhere and they have to be custom made by Ross over in the states and will cost about $600+$200 delivery. My question is how can i tell if my rings are at fault and if they are still ok and is this price ok for a set of rings?
