Hey fellas, I've been getting heaps of different advice on what I need to do to get my turbo kit on my X-Trail, legal...

I've been to the DPI, they said go to the pits and then the pits told me to go to DPI etc...

Some people (the police themselves) said I just need to take it over the pits and that's it, wheras others (DPI) said I need to fill in this modification form then get an engineers certification... Then there's MOD plates, engineers certificates, emissions tests... (where the hell do they come into the equation?)

From the people who have done it all before (getting mods legal), tell me, what EXACTLY do I need to do!?

Roughly how much am I up for also ($$$)?

Quick answer,

if its anything like NSW you'll need to get an emissions test and an engineers cert to show that your car doesnt break the emissions laws and that the mods dont lessen the structual integity of the vehicle.

After that you might just be able to drive around with no worries and the certificate will get you out of any defects.

but it sounds like u guys have mod plates or something.... so i'd say call the engineer and ask him.

In all likely hood its hs work that will get you the plates.

Not having experienced with legalities of mods, the only advice I can give you is fix / stamp a reference numbers to the parts requiring certification by an engineer. The Engineer should be able to advise which parts depending on the engineer you choose here: http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/mediaFiles/lic_IB-102M.pdf

It has become apparant that Engineers certification means nadda unless you can prove the certificate refers to the specific part it was intended for. I'd get the engineer to cross reference his certification with the part number you have fixed / stamped to the mods. This will save the headache of argueing with "the plod" that the parts on the car are those that the engineer certified.

As you are fitting a turbocharger to your car which obviously does not come factory on your particular model, you will need to fill out the following form and submit it directly to the Welshpool Technical Section on 21 Murray Road South, Welshpool.

If the Tech Section approves the modifications, then you go about having them all fitted and getting an engineers certificate. Once that has been completed, you will need to have the vehicle inspected over the pits for the modifications that have been performed.

As you will be adding a forced-induction unit, there is a very high chance you will need to undergo an emission test, HOWEVER i am not sure if you will need to have the IM240 Emissions test. I did speak to a guy over the phone today who had a HSV GTO Coupe with lumpy cams. He said he didn't have to do the IM240 test but a similar alternative at a business in Bentley (I think?) costing around $100.

Putting that aside, once it has passed the pits and the emissions test, away you go with your newly modified vehicle to enjoy :(

Bolt it on, chances of getting in trouble are slim. Especially in that sort of car, get in the shit remove it and bolt it back on. I turn charged a Magna when I finished school and thought about all the technical shit, if you get a yellow remove the gear and bring it back to stock form.

Ive applied for some crazy idea mods, including a RWD conversion, and theyre actually pretty easy on what you can do, given a green light every time, not that I've followed up many.

It isnt all "legal this and that", as long as they can see quality workman ship, its done properly, and its safe, they'll pass it. There isnt a criteria soo to speak, of what you can and can't do, they'll assess each application for what it is, and go from there. No rule books.

Syfon, tell your bosses that application form is shit...they ask technical questions and give you two and a half lines to explain it all...Epic Fail!

BTW, dont listen to this "if you get in trouble, go stock, pass, and put it back on" - you could put your gear back on, get 50m away from your driveway and get another yellow - its a retarded idea. Get it licensed legally, they way you want it, and make it look neat, you'll have nothing to worry about.

The probability of been pulled over in a new X-Trail and having under your bonnet checked at ridiculously low, my aunty cruises around in one with her kids. From my own experience I never had any issues driving a higher risk car over about 18 months adding a turbocharger and extra parts which did not come from factory. In all seriousness if you did turbo charge it and the police pulled you over and you had the appropriate information if they wanted to nail you they would. Financially you will save some alot of money. If you have the coin and time the appropriate legal way might be pathway.

    • That was the first session so not a lot to take from the day. It was low 20s ambient and the coolant had got to 110 (and obviously had some pressure!) so that still needs to be addressed. I haven't downloaded the data yet but will. I had refilled the auto trans with Redline DT6 because it claimed the best viscosity I could find at 100o. It wasn't really long enough to get a good feel for that; while the trans got to 100o in the session it still wasn't shifting crisply as I hoped. I think I'll try a few more sessions before judging. No steering motor overheat but I'd hope not in only 1 session! But finally the suspension; it was night and day over the standard stuff and the car was a couple of seconds quicker on the same crappy tyres, which is a huge difference. I'll stick with that and get some sway bars and a mechanical diff sorted too and see how that all goes together
    • I guess it’s partially a compromise of how my car is used, wanting to be able to switch from drift to grip with track side on-car adjustment. Also partially with the way the knuckles are set there is more static camber but less dynamic camber gain. 
    • OK, so update from the track day on Friday It was a classic "an unfortunate series of events'. There were a few cars around and when i checked my mirror coming out of the fish hook I notice some smoke from the rear of mine. Looked again and it was getting much worse, I figured I'd blown a turbo or something to got off it and pulled off the racing line. However.... since it is a left hairpin into a right kink, I was on the inside of the next corner. There was a car passing me on the left and a big drop off over the ripple strip on the right......and someone had knocked the witch's hat that was on the apex about 1m onto the track. So, between those 3, I decided to mow down the cone and not damage my car/the other car. Right choice, but surprising result.  The car decided the cone was a small pedestrian so it blew the rear bonnet hinges up to protect their head in the upcoming person to car impact....I didn't see that coming and like an airbag deployment it happened super fast. Straight into the pits from there, everything was driving fine but it became clear it was a coolant leak not smoke, it was billowing up onto the windscreen. Onto the trailer and home. I'll do a separate thread about the repair (once I work out what it is ), but the immediate problem was the bonnet wouldn't open because the front was pinched onto the front bar and would not release. Ultimately we unbolted the hinge from the bonnet, pulled it back a little and it released from the front OK. "There's your problem", the top radiator hose had popped off at the radiator.
    • Yeah that looks like great caster, but I'd suggest trying less front camber some time and seeing if it helps with braking without reducing mid corner speed too much
    • I ended up setting the rear 5mm higher than normal to give some clearance.  My plan is to run the least camber I can in the rear which I think with the extra width is going to need to be -1.75 to -2.00° just to get clearance.  Guards have been rolled and pulled as much as they can/I would be wanting to.  front has the Acostal knuckle with the KPI change and the drop etc. So should be okay with the existing settings I have run with AR1s etc Front: Toe total -2mm(1mm out each side) Caster +7.5° Camber -3.8° Ackerman +15°
