Next Project? E36 M3, E46 M3, R34 Gtr?

Recommended Posts

I agree with the M3 sound. Sounds....whooshy. I prefer Hondas or the NSX by comparison.

I do love the M3 though, great performance for an NA combined with the usual BMW luxury with plenty of space. Not sure if you can get a convertible here in Australia but there are quite a few in UK (and going at good prices too). Personally if I were to spend that much I would go for the AMGs from Mercedes specifically the E55. 1/4 mile in under 13 seconds that thing hauls.

To add, I am very impressed with the Skyline 370GT, its a gorgeous looking car :

Hi.

I got a e46 M3 aswell as a couple of GTR's and to be totally honest with you the Gtr's shit on the M3.

Mines a 2005 6 speed coupe and i've been whipped by a few Wrx's lol.

Mine has a Remus exhaust, extractors, Mspeed ecu and CAI.

Defiantly slower than my stock R33 GTR. Abit more responsive than the Gtr's but they run out of puff after 100km/h or so.

I own several cars and time after time i end up going back to my R32 GTR. Best car i've owned in my opinion.

So an unbiased opinion.. go the R34 GTR if you must or just stick to your R33. There really not that expensive to mod if you look around and do it right mods first time you can basically get 300kw with just a few mods unopened.

What area are you in?? Wouldn't mind giving you a test drive of my M3.

I'm selling the M3 for $55k but i reckon don't bother, Their just a boulivard/cruiser car and overrated in my opinion.

Interesting about your comparison Candy33...

The specs in writing of the E46 M3 look to be inline ball with the R33 GTR.

Stock for stock that is...

I think candy33 nailed it,

He owns both and summed up the M3 as a boulivard/cruiser... thats all it is really. dont get me wrong I think the E46 is awesome - it will just leave you with blue balls if you know what I mean after having all the years of GTR ownership!

Go the 34 GTR and you'll never look back - best piece of car I've ever driven.

we must be into the dollars now so thats my $4.25c

$4.25, the best value I could get:)

All your info is most helpful and with a budget it is looking more and more like keeping my R33 and focus on doing some minor work to that to get 250-275AWKW is the best value.

But as I said, I am test driving a few different vechiles over the next few weeks and am starting to look at a lot of different models so I can make a thorough decision.

Cheers All!!

Just thought I would let you know I test drove a 2005 HSV Clubsport in 6sp manual and was quite disappointed. Loved the sound but when I put my foot down was a little sluggish.

On the other hand, I test drove the new Golf GTI and I was super impressed, so great little torque early on in rev range and a great looking interior!!

Very Impressed:)

Has thrown a few spanners in the works that for sure as I never thought of an Golf GTI.

I'm not sure of the specs for a M3, but all i can tell you is they lack the torque and top end rush of a GTR. Their two different type of cars aimed at different people. The power delivery of a M3 is more like a Vtec than anything else, but sounds worse in my opinion.. the exhaust note reminds me of a handfull of marbles getting shaked in a Milo tin. :P

Each to their own i guess, but not my cup of tea. M3 is a car for an executive/businessman and doesn't deliver great performance in the real world, much like alot of other cars out there. Trust me if you drive one you'll know what i mean.

Thanks candy, I didnt think of these as I thought they might be out of my price range.

I drove a beautiful E36 M3 tonight that has been meticulously looked after with some nice mods, Exhaust-PowerChip-Suspension and has low kms and immaculate condition.

I think my GTR is going up For Sale while this baby is still available!!

Very impressed!!!!!

Who wants an immaculate R33 GTR?????

As much as i love the GTR 34 i'd pick e46 M3 for my daily, the reason are simple,it doesn't attract cops as much as the GTR, it looks nice, it has nice interior and cool gadget, and for 3.2 litre N/A it has decent power for daily driving. CAI,ECU flashed and exhaust will do the job i reckon and besides you don't really need 1000 HP car for your daily. anyway for that price range there are other options such as merc AMGs or Audi's RS/S. if you want more torque go AMG, the new AMG with 6.3l V8 is just crazy in the straight line. but each to their own i guess.

I see.

Yeah your right, 2 different type of cars.

Good thing is, you have both cars and can say what the difference is

One day, you might have to take me for a spin in the M3 E46. :( Haha!

Glaze.

Have you considered the new Evo X MR?

I drove my mates one and was rather impressed and the interior is one of the best ive seen from a japanese car.

Just a thought.

EVO X would make a good daily.

Just the light mods, like exhaust and high flow panel filter, it be perfect.

    • Yeah I suspect even if you hold airmass per cycle/cylinder constant if you get too far away from stock you're still going to have problems running the factory tune within the bounds of the factory load scale. Cams, different displacement/rod ratio, etc. I'm just lucky that the GTIII-SS with wastegate boost + CA compliance cats is pretty much equivalent to stock turbos. When I have actual space I can finally get it tuned and modify the fuel system for flex fuel to 100% handle any detonation concerns when cranking the boost to whatever those dinky turbos can put out.
    • I would say no, why, because my daughter, who also lives in Goulburn, hasn't recommended us going there Pity, as we miss all the German joints around in Sydney, actually, the restaurants are the only thing I really miss about Sydney, and a special mention to Ishibanboshi at Bondi Junction, their Kara-age Don is heart cloggingly deliciousness (always added a special boiled egg...or 2) 😋
    • Does that German restaurant still exist in the old place out the NW end of Goulburn? When I say "out the NW end of"...I am really being vague. It was 1997 when I was last there, and the only point of reference I can recall is that it was on the opposite side of the main drag from the big merino. And when I say "opposite side of the main drag", I don't mean "on the main drag". It was either a couple of streets back from there, or might have even been out in the sticks a bit further. Was an old farm building or mill or somesuch. And when I say "the big merino" I might actually be thinking of a completely different part of town, because I just looked on maps and the big bugger is not where I remembered him to be! The food was good, consisting largely of various German mystery-meat sausage/loaf things and kartofflen.
    • So while the second sentence is completely correct and the whole point of the conversation, the first sentence bears consideration. If this bloke is just hoping to throw big turbos on and drive it around, because there are no helpful facilities at all in his tropical paradise** then he likely has zero chance of even knowing what the TP is on the last column in the stock maps, let alone know whether the ECU is operating anywhere near it or past it. So the point is very very moot. And, per what I said before, at stock boost on those turbos, you may well be off the end of the map. **I'm just back from Vanuatu, so I know exactly what small Pacific nations can be like wrt paradise without requisite facilities. But it's not even that simple. I put a high flow on my car and had to drive it around without a proper tune because of the lack of opportunity*** to put the bigger AFM and injectors into it to allow it to be tuned. I had to turn the boost down to less than I had before, and back off the boost controller's ramp, because it was exploring parts of the map that it didn't drive in before, and really couldn't access for tuning on the dyno either, and so was pinging. It was still well within the last column, because when I first**** set up the Nistune on the Neo I rescaled all axes of the maps to give some more space to explore. ***Family dyno was broken ****This was 13 years ago, and the TIM thing wasn't a thing then and so TP would definitely grow when pushing past the stock tune's limits.
    • Yep, this bit another local owner. I caught it before putting the transmission back into the car, what I noticed was the pressure plate fingers weren't flat and even. It's more obvious with the pull style clutch because the throwout bearing ring was visibly not flat once everything is put together. Nismo should really update their instructions to call out this specific detail. I'm not even sure the clutch as-shipped orients everything properly.
