So what sort of improvement do you think you've got out of this? Seat of the pants feel that is??

Also - is this stuff safe on our O2 sensors and cat converters?

I know that some of the race fuels can kill O2 sensors and cats, but I think that is becuase of their lead content.

Well toluene was used during the 'turbo era' of formula 1. Back when they were running 5bars(73psi) of boost in qualiying and 4bars(59psi) in race. The fuels were limited to 102 RON so 84% toluene and 16%n-heptane (has no octane rating to bring it back to 102). This fact should kill the debate about it being a 'dodgy' backyard ****tail. I posted this info the other day on the free horsepower thread on SDU.

Don't go running straight toluene in a hury, the formula 1 cars had exhaust gas warming the petrol tank to help the toluene vaporise properly.

I think starting off with 10-15% and working up. I have about 25% running with a little more boost than normal and it works real well. Thats not to say that a slightly lower octane mix might even go better if it combusts more effectively.

The improvement is ;

* run more boost -- no pinging

* turbo spools slightly quicker and earlier --- hotter exhaust gas

* engine makes more power and is more responsive --- back of the seat you can feel (unlike off the shelf octane boosters).

Im not sure about the O2 & cat , if people can run unleaded race fuels and not worry it won't be a problem.

A link to a thread was put on here or SDU a week or so ago that has good info on octane boosting.

It is a very long thread so here is a summary:

1) A number of octane booster bottles were tested (using a tester used by NASCAR and others) and it was found none of increased octane by more than 0.6. Some bottles say "increases octane by up to six points", meaning 96 goes to 96.6 not 102.

2) It is suggested that these booster bottles do increase power possibly using long change molecules that deaden and/or change the frequency of the ping picked up by your knock detector. ie. your knock detector doesn't pick up the ping and doesn't retard therefore more power. :eek:

3) High octane fuels have a limitted tank life (as low as 40 days, in the servo tank and/or yours) due to venting of the good stuff. You should buy your HO fuel from a well used servo, rather than a backwater that take months to sell 20000L of 98 octane.

4) 10:1 is the recommend tolulene mix

Also I think it's the heat not the lead that kills O2 sensors.

If heat kills O2 sensors mine should have died along time ago. I've got my dump pipe wrapped up with DEI tape, No heat can escape (poor O2 sensor) you can hold onto the dump pipe with your bare hand even when the pipe underneath is red hot.

BOOSTMEISTER : I ran up to 50% at one stage but started running in to problems on cold/rainy days, it was a very high comp NA engine and it would blow condensation out the exhaust even when engine was red hot, I contacted Shell tech department and they recommended 30% as a max mixed with avgas.

Just to be pedantic, I wouldn't consider vortex as 98RON fuel. Although the fact the fuelwatch (http://www.fuelwatch.wa.gov.au) doesn't include vortex in they're list of 98RON fuel isn't proof by itself, Caltex, by their own admission rate vortex as being no lower than 96RON. http://www.caltex.com.au/products_oil_detail.asp?id=15

Boostmeister has the right idea, ring your BP distribution center and go buy some. Remember to reffer to it as a "Solvent" and not a fuel. Don't mention that you are using it as a fuel -- say " I need it to clean engine parts and stuff".

$48 for 20L is excellent and its straight from the refinery to you. You can't anything as pure as that!

On a factory ECU note; whilst my 25% mix worked well ( I ran 14psi+ through my factory ic without my refrigeration on and it didn't ping, since turned it back to 10psi for long term use) I think its a good idea to reset the ECU and re-learn the fuel map to suit the higher octane. Reset it again when you switch back to normal.

73psi/ 5 bar of boost (1200HP) on the F1 engines in the old turbo days using toluene real world enough for you?

Side effects ;

uncontrolled grin ,

a lack of pinging under very high loads,

wheel spin.

I've used it for years in superbikes and also in 500cc MX bikes......never had any dramas as long as I didn't use than more than 30%.

I don't think there is any thing perculiar to Turbo/EFI cars that would cause a problem.

Other additives can make rubber hoses and plastic components brittle over time, alcohol in particular, but I've had no problem with Tolulene/Methyl-Benzene..

Also have you done any before / after dyno runs to see the difference ?

Sounds like a nice idea but then again if its that good why isn't everyone doing ie (everyone been all HPI cars).

I think that turbo cars have a more heat tolerent o2 sensor as a turbos exhaust will heat up much more than a n/a car .When i had my turbo civic it melted the wiring in my 02 sensor cause of the extra heat i wrote it off as being a o2 sensor that wasnt designed for temps that hi.

But to clear this up a bit for me .

With premium petrol which most of us use anyway.

Buy 100% toluene and mix it down...like getting cordial, the more concentrate, the more brews you can make :)

I dunno what is with your suppliers, but here in QLD, we can get 20L of Toluene for $42 in good grade...have tried up to 30% and it's still running strong. Is it true for you guys down south that whilst getting it from a BP depot, you didn't need at CAMS license?

toluene does not harden fuel line rubber. If it did (which it doesn't) then ordinary petrol would do exactly the same.

Your thinking of methanol, which does promote corrosion of metal parts and rubber lines. Alcohol is water soluble which is the problem.

I can assure you that toluene is quite easy to use and the car loves it.

Does toluene have a shelf life??

I know (thinking back to the petrol RC car days :) ) that some nitro fuels have a self life of about a month, then they are useless.

Just wondering if we can get a 20l drum and sit it in the garage and just use it for drags every few months ?

    • I checked the injectors again (1 and 2, since they’re easiest to access) to make sure they weren’t clogged. Even though the entire fuel system had been cleaned, I wanted to be certain. Everything looked clean, so I reinstalled and connected everything. When I started the car to confirm everything was okay, it immediately revved up high, so I shut it off straight away. I checked to see if I’d missed a vacuum hose or something, but everything was connected. On the second attempt, the car ran without the high idle, but I noticed a distinct “compressed air” sound coming from the engine bay. Tracing the sound, I pushed injector #6 forward slightly and the noise stopped — it turned out it wasn’t seated properly, despite the fuel rail being bolted down. While holding it in place, the car idled steadily without stalling and ran for over 5 minutes. At this point, I pulled all six injectors out just in case I hadn’t seated them correctly or dirt had gotten onto the O-rings. Unfortunately, I discovered that I had damaged 3 out of 6 injectors (the OEM 270cc ones) during installation. So yes, this was my fault. Since only the pintle caps were damaged, I’ve ordered a Fuel Injector Service Kit from NZEFI to refurbish them. In the meantime, I reinstalled my new injectors – the car now idles fine for over 15 minutes without stalling. I have not attempted to drive it so far. It’s not perfect yet, as it hesitates when the throttle is pressed, but it’s a big improvement. Unplugging the IACV with the new injectors idles at around 800rpm, even with the IACV screw tightened fully. But this is probably due to tune.
    • I wanted to try and preserve the front bumper as long as possible, they're not cheap and are made to order in Japan. Taking inspiration from my previous K11 Micra build where I made an undertray for the Impul bumper, I did the same for this BN Sports bumper but a little slimmed down.  This time round I only made a 'skid plate' (if that's the correct wording/term) for just the bumper surface area, the Micra version covered the gap like an undertray. Starting off with a sheet of mild steel approx. 0.9mm thick 4ft x 2ft in size. I traced around the bumper, cut it out and cleaned the edges. Luckily I was able to get two halves from one piece of metal In the video I installed it as is, but I've since then I've removed it to spray and add a rubber edging trim. The rubber trim is suitable for 1-2mm and it's a really nice tight fit. The bolts had to be loosened due to the plates being too tight against the bumper, the trim wouldn't push on I used some stainless M6 flat headed bolts for a flusher finish (rather than hex heads poking down), I believe this style fastener is used for furniture too incase you struggle to source some. The corner's are a little wider, but this may be an advantage incase I get close to bumping it  The front grill got some attention, finally getting round to repairing it. Upon removal one fixing pulled itself out of the plastic frame, one side is M8 that fixes inside of the frame, where as the other side is M5. Not knowing I could get replacements, I cut down an M8 bolt, threaded it inside the frame along with a decent amount of JB Weld.  The mesh was replaced to match the bumper. One hole on the bonnet/hood had to be drilled out to 8mm to accommodate the new stud, once the glue had set it could be refitted. I think the reason the grill was double meshed was to hide the horn/bonnet latch (which makes sense) but I much prefer it matching the bumper Bumper refitted and it's looking much better IMO The Youtube video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVZP35io9MA
