Hey all,

What program do you use to create your HDR's?

Also, what process do you use to take the images? i.e 1/3, 1, 2 stops???

I attempted one (quite badly) using Photomatix but it really didn't turn out. I'm wondering if I took the pics wrong or didn't use the program correctly.

Cheers,

Chris.

Photomatix here too, and pretty much the same procedure, but i use a nikon that can only to 1 stop max, so take 5 shots from -2 to +2 and use 3 to 5 depending on the shot.

check out www.stuckincustoms.com for the best free tutorial i've found.

what went wrong with photomatix??

a few things can go wrong with the whole process... but the photomatix part is the easy bit, its post processing that really makes it look good tho.

if you are shooting a moving subject(s) you will end up with ghosts.

To fix this, use apeture priority mode and bump up the fstop to f22 or something. That will make the smudge in the later shots less obvious. Then you need to mask in the moving object from the shot you want in ps. so adjust the raw file to the right properties then layer align and mask reveal.

I blend them in photoshop, but I avoid using their built in script. I've tried the photomatix plugin, but still wasn't happy with its results. I find most automated methods result in pics that just look artificial.

I prefer to do them by hand, much better control of what goes on and what gets highlighted, and what gets muted. Problem I have with most automated HDR processes is that it lights everything up like a christmas tree... there's no subject anymore, nothing to draw the eye etc. Anyways, enough of my rant... read:

If you tweak the settings yourself in the tonemapping it makes a huge difference. I dont think a human could mask and mix the varyinh light levels in really complex shots... but that said... i havent tried.

Seems to be a few spots of really bad noise/unclarity in the pic as you'll see.

I used 1/3 f stops for this, so quite a few pics. Maybe I gotta work on the post processing part in photomatix. Haven't used the program much before this so...

    • Working through possible solutions of converting my mechanical speedo.    Anyone know what type of speedo sensor the factory r34 gtr getrag has ? what the output is ? I assume its not a VSS and more a voltage like earlier speedo sensors ? Can an ECU read it ?

    • I can get more photos of it here soon and I plan to make a thread detailing the process. I received the car this way and it sorely needs refinishing. That is probably the most appealing photo of it. Up close it is fading, cracked, and needs to be re-glued. Depending on their condition I'm on the fence between refinishing or making a new set.  Another angle hiding the pimples and razor pumps
    • According to this thread the RS4V with build plate RC40 comes with the R200 diff @ 4.083 ratio as well (mine has said RC40 denotation). We may need to check if the axle stubs are the same pattern as well. The auto subframes have longer axles. However I think yours being a later Series 2 as well, we should have the same bolt pattern for the diff stubs. Unless your upgraded rear also has upgraded axles. Either way, I would not be opposed to pulling the covers to check so I can inspect that  fancy rear core  Also I don't have HICAS. I don't believe that should change things but I hope the people here with heaps more experience than me can correct me if I'm wrong   Let me know if you want to attempt to make this work and I can get some pictures of mine from under the car.
    • It's not that straightforward. For example I have had this code because my ignitor/power transistor wires were unplugged. It knows something is wrong but has no idea what it means. If you want to actually diagnose this I recommend following the service manual flowchart for code 21. Ohm out the harness, coilpacks, inspect the ECU, etc. And again, it's entirely possible for there to be no problem at all but if you're running a different coilpack it'll trigger the code because it doesn't like what it sees.
