hey guys, im a bit confused on whether or not to use the rb30e pump as well as which oil feed restrictors to go for.

ive gotten a few different opinions and have gotten that the rb30e oil pump is ok as long as i keep it under 7000rpm?

and also the rb25det head should use 1.5mm restrictors x2 on the block. not blocking one off and 1.5 on the other as the oil control guide says.

can anyone confirm?

ive read a shitload of threads and didnt come up with a definite answer.

the rb30e pump can be used but since it has a very small area of contact it is not ideal, the series 2 r33 gtst pump used in conjunction with a crank collar will give a much greater area of contact and should be a more reliable, especially at higher revs.

As for the oil restrictors, that would depend on the oil pump used and the type of vct oil feed if any, that you are doing.. i think if you do the external vct feed or no vct you should block one of and use a 1.5mm restrictor, im doing the internal vct oil feed that uses the oil gallery in the head to supply oil to the vct cam, so im going to try using only a 1.5mm restrictor and see how that goes.. i have also drilled out the oil return holes and running a rear head oil drain kit..

so instead of the stock 2x2mm and 1x1.5mm oil feed to the head ill have 1x2mm and 1x1.5mm

the beauty of not having a large contact area is the inner gear has a thicker 'ring' where the flats are not machined. The saw tooth gear design and the divider inside the pump body makes to less prone to chatter and fracturing the pump gear.

There are a few 8 and 9 second VL's out there using stock pumps.

Is that with any modifications Paul? and is that the rb30e or rb30et pump?

and if i was to use the rb30e oil pump what restrictor setup should i go for if i was going to do the internal oil feed to VCT?

I can confirm that this is with at least the RB30E as i just pulled my oil pump off there. Jeez its got a small contact area!

Dirtgarage are you saying its superior to run the RB30E pump over an extended collar/rb20/25 oil pump?

ive been looking on the calaisturbo forum and it looks like the rb30et and rb30e Series 2 pumps are fine when doing 25 head conversions as long as there is no wear inside the pump (involves taking it apart and putting it back together) they also suggest shimming up the spring @ the pressure relief valve end.

ill be taking my rb25 series 2 pump off in a few days ill post some pics up of the rb30e and rb25det pumps.. i know the 25 pump flows more at a higher pressure, i think dirt garage is talking about the gears within the pump itself? can you explain it a little more dirt garage... i have heard of a few rb30e oil pump failures with the pump cracking at fairly high revvs

if your going to use the rb30e oil pump i wouldnt restrict the oil feeds

Hey Bud,

I pulled the single 1.5mm and blocked rear off my RB25/30 around a year back as:

1. Since blocking the rear restrictor a very quiet slight thud developed instantly on the first start at the rear of the head for a fraction of a second.

2. there was signs of things getting a little hot i.e not enough oil around to remove the heat.

Hydraulic Head (rb20/25/30SOHC) - 2 x 1.3mm Restrictors

Solid Lifter Head (Neo/RB26) - 1 x 1.3mm / 1 x blocked off

Would it be fine to just run 2 X1.5 restrictors if using stock bottom end and neo head with VCT and 90% normal street driving?

I don't understand why if a RB25 uses 2 X 1.5 and its recommend 1 X1.3 and block one off, is this for an extreme high revving engine used on a track?

Why block the front, does oil come thru the VCT and feed the front of the head? What happened with your front cam seal is that related to blocking the front or nothing to do with it?

Because the single feed is all you really need. R33 the VCT does feed some oil into the front cam cap and surrounding area I believe, but that's isn't the case with the neo.

You could run 2x .8mm restrictors for the same amount of flow but I would personally run the biggest single restrictor to minimise the chance of blockage.

Swapped out my front cam seal and haven't seen the car in 6 weeks as I was away with work. Will see if it still leaks when I get back. And it had nothing to do with any oil restrictors, it was a second hand head so I can only really speculate on what caused it but I have a spare cam on its way now so if it still leaks I will swap a new exhaust cam in.

Ok, I don't plan on doing any mods other than these restrictors and I don't wanna use 60weight oil, its a pretty factory setup so far apart from the bigger cubes from the RB30 I wonder if keeping it 2 X 1.5mm like a factory neo would cause issue for the short squirts it will get.....

so many things that people would recommend that it wont have, I guess i'll just see how it goes ...

    • If it (the code) wasn't still current, it should have gone away by itself by now. No, nothing it 10/10. But it is quite likely. Everything else to do with the ignition could still be responsible (which is wires and connectors). The car is an old piece of shit now, so all the wires and connectors are also old pieces of shit.

    • Before I get to the test day, just to finish off the android head unit. This is a demo from car start up....the standard/host system takes a few seconds to boot (same as all v37) but Android comes up quickly. In this vid I'm using the delivered launcher but have set the default to Agami since which is easier to navigate when if use primarily 5 apps. You can see the host system still takes over when required eg putting it in reverse, and you can switch between Android and not by holding the back button 3 sec. It is pretty responsive (fast) but you can see I had to press harder than expected a couple of times.  I still have the phone connected to the stock system, and that also seamlessly takes over Android music playing. v37-android-demo.mp4 The bigger reason that I put this in though is so that I can use Ecutek directly on the head unit. That gives me a dash with logging (up to 20MB only), high and low value warnings on any parameter etc etc. I've run a USB cable from the Ecutek OBD dongle to a USB input on the unit, easy. v37-ecutek-demo.mp4   The unit did freeze on the launcher the other day, I think Agami was trying to verify the license when it didn't have a data connection...will monitor and report back if there are any other problems but so far I'm very happy with the upgrade.
    • Nah that is just crappy GPS mapping, I did have a small excursion (cold tyres, damp track, surprise!), will post up that when I get a chance.
