I know I should just dry my eyes and harden the F#$%k up, but it's a very sad day for me today. I''ve just sold my motor and as much as I should be happy, I feel (cliche) so empty. I've had a long association with this motor, about 12 years all up and it's only cost me a set of rings and timing chain. It would be the most reliable motor I've ever owned, even with triple webers. Fuel up the bowl, turn the key and away it went. What have I done? (reaching for another tissue and skull of the sphincter of the universe, gulp!)

Now that you understand my grief I'll continue to get to the point, that being " I STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT TO PUT IN iT'S PLACE". I am a lover of V8's, had 3 in the past, and I think it will be a relatively straight forward swap. It'll be carburetored so I dont have to bother with efi, computer and so forth. 308 and celica box is my preference, BUT I aslo like the idea of RB30et, as at the end of the day it's about HP@ tw I'm after.Somewhere in the 230HP. I sent emails off to Castlemain Rod Shop and Dower about having a custom housing made to mesh the Lseries and 308 together, hopefully they can assist. Maybe the box won't handle this power, I do have three all up and one maybe a Z box. If anyone has parts at home to make my conversion easier, maybe you have a complete setup you want to get rid of and doesn't necssarily have to be one of the above engines, let me know. If you've got a suggestion or good ideas( don't say ddon't sell your L28) I'm all ears. I just want to have it on the road within the next 6 months. More the sphincter of the universe refill I think.Ricky

Rocky Auto in Japan made a Kenmari skyline, had a highly modded Rb26 Non turb, had individual throttle bodies, custom tuned stainless extractors, looks like a work of art. puts out 300hp too.

my plan of attack would be to get a ratty old R31 with RB30e, drop that into your car (would only take a few weekends)

then drive that abour while you buy a 2nd RB30, but have it on an engine stand and build it up to a RB30DE (rb25de non-vct head)

twin cam 3 litre, nissan (starting to sound like a 1JZ) once that franken moter is built, replace ratty engine with hipo twincam

you can turbo it too if you wanted uber power. although i have seen the RB30de put out 150kW at the wheels with no mods except an Adaptronic ECU (very versatile, self tuning)

Wont you need to get these engines 'certified / engineered',

I would not think the 'L' box would be strong enough for a v8, I ran a 'celica' box behind my ford 250 crossflow, done the bearing mod, lasted forever, but I had always though the 'supra' boxes were even tougher ?

Your right there Nigel, supra box would be the way to go should I go 308. They're tough as. I'm going to tidy up the bay while motor is out and have a long think about it. Engineering will be done and I'm going to talk to a guy in my area who's converted heaps of old holden with v8s' and V6 supercharged. Hoping not to have to change out my drums for discs. The RB30de idea Ilike and had thought about this path a while ago.I can purchase a RB30 and 5 speed currrently for $680, it's tempting but I keep thinking about all the computer and injection shit that goes with it. Carby V8 easier.

im absolutely in love with my RB20det at the moment and i'd highly recommend them to anyone :-)

mine's in a silvia which is about the same weight as the c210 roughly. so in that theory, it should go hard as hell :-)

I have a supra box behind the 5 litre stroker in my TR8. Nice box and tough as nails. On the other hand I had a nice 600 holley on the V8 and I keep looking at the fuel injection stuff I have for the motor and everytime it loses tune I think I must do the conversion. EFI is so much easier to live with.

Ravenoak, that must be some little power monster with that set up, those TR8's must wiegh about 900 kg. I've finally made my mind up to also go 308 after talking to my mechanic friend. I'm now looking for a VN 308 that I'm going to put a carb manifold on and change the dizzy and hopefully get the 5 speed with it. If not my mates got a Borgwarner 5 speed( supposedly out of a V8) or I'll also have to use Supra. I'm also interested in earlier 308s' black or red providing it's front sumped. I've been qouted $800 to make mounts (engine and g/box) and to fit both. If anyones got a bargain lying around, let me know.

I want to stay with carbs and I've aleady applied to the state to put in a 308 and have green light for this. If i change my mind I have to reaply and legislation has changed since I first applied.

Tears have dried and now I may be purchasing a 308 and supposedly supra 5 speed. Looking at it on Tuesday, comes with the bell housing also and is coming out of a WB Statesman. I'm really hoping it checks out good as price is $1800 the lot, although I need to buy a carby. I'll take some pics and maybe post for those who like to look at V motors.

It is certainly a cracker of a car. All up weight is just under 1000kgs and with around 300 odd horses it does the trick. Like all great british cars it has its foibles but is generally reliable and is a great road registered track car. Interior space is fantastic and there is even enough room in the boot for a weekend away at the track.

Here are some photos from its shakedown day at Eastern Creek:

Well all I can say is WATCH OUT!

I bought a spare alternator for my 1UZ last night and the guy is building an hillclimb car. It will fall into group2 sports cars, how does that compare with your TR8?

This car I saw under construction last night is an Peugot 307 and it's getting an rear mounted twin turbo'd 1UZFE, using an european spec renault transaxle and it will weigh in the vicinity of 900kg.

Cheers, D

It is ultimately a road registered and engineered car so it never will compare to those specialist track only sports cars. It is not caged (no barrier to supersprints) and has full trim etc. My mildy modified STi did quciker lap times but was pretty boring to drive on the track compared to a short wheel based V8 RWD.....I gave up chasing times in favour of a more challenging and rewarding drive.

    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day   Highway gets as low as 10l/100km on my end so I'm not as worried about it being a mechanical issue. More likely just the tune on the haltech.
    • While I was waiting for the new parts to come in for the charge pipe and radiator I decided to do some turbo modification. The drive pressure (exhaust backpressure) was a lot higher that I thought it should be. For 32lbs of boost drive was 55lbs. The turbine housing is a 1.10AR and my turbo builder has suggested to go to a 1.25AR. To test if a larger AR would do anything to reduce drive pressure AND not spend any money I decided to hog out the divider in my current housing. I removed it from the inlet and the whole way through the housing.  After reassembly and testing it doesn't look like this modification did anything for reducing drive pressure or requiring more fuel (making more power). Oh well, it was worth a shot. We'll get some data at the track if it makes it past the 60ft. I also machined a $7 shift knob off Amazon to fit my Stillway shifter since I didn't like the Stillway shift knob. Next on the list was the radiator replacement and fabrication of a new intercooler tube that had no silicon coupler. No pictures of this - I was short on time each night after work to get this done and didn't stop to take pictures.  Next was to get the clutch disks out and replaced. Previously when installing the dogbox I had ordered a set of the same sintered iron disks I had been running because I switched to the 26-spline input shaft. I thought it was odd that they didn't have any markings or brand name on them like all my old disks had but installed them anyway. At the track I could not get the clutch to lock up using my normal strategies. After two track nights I reached out to the clutch manufacturer and ask their thoughts. They said they had to switch the material out because they were having trouble getting the original material and that this new material would not take to being slipped very well.  So out with the first set of 26-spline disks and in with the correct material 26-spline disks. While I had the trans out I added an inspection/service hole. I've wanted one of these for a while. Now I can have a look at things and change the front cover shimming when needed (clutch wear). I hustled and got the clutch change done in a few hours on a Saturday. Hopped in the car and drove home. On the way home I did a 1-3 pull. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd the core plug in the back of the cylinder head popped out and dumped all the coolant. Thankfully I was only 30 seconds from home and coasted it there. Datalog showed nothing unusual and 2.5psi of coolant pressure. That plug has been in there since 1992 but I guess it worked its way out. Pulled the trans AGAIN and replaced the plug, JB welded it in, and made a brace. Also deleted the head drain I had added in during the bearing issue fiasco.  I am currently changing my boost control plumbing to make it cleaner. After that is done I'll make another attempt at getting past the 60.
