When fitting a larger radiator, you need to cut the black "glassfibre composite" frame that it sits in

Ohh yeh like what Scott had to do?

should be too hard of a job right? In all honesty, what will the bigger radiator acheive? will this only make a difference if the cars tuned?

What do you think a larger radiator will achieve?

Better cooling control for one, especially when you consider that the stock core is only 16mm thick lol.

Not too difficult if you are happy to take to your car with a hacksaw.

I still had to hack up a fair bit to get my custom radiator in after I lost my nerve (and patience) with the Mishimoto unit that now resides in Scott's car

hmm.

16mm thick? more like you could fold it and make a paper aeroplane. i do see what you mean. is there a thread explaining this more? eg prices brands dimensions etc? might be worth looking into

G35 radiators from the US... or a Z33 radiator that will need to be modified (cap needs to be moved and mounting "pegs" may need to be moved.

Make sure they have an in-tank cooler too.

That is all

For a custom one? I took my stock unit to Race Radiators who made me on up using a Griffin Race core and has them put the OEM in-tank into the custom unit.

Lovely unit and they do great work.

I still have my stock radiator if you want to go this route - but it will probably cost you more than buying a Chinese Z33 core and having it modified.

not really but we should start one on m35stagea.info

When you put yours in, feel free to put up a good "How to"... which reminds me, I really should do that transmission service post...

hmm might look at the G35's from us seeing as the dollar is still pretty good. its a pity no one has really made after market products for our cars :D

Has anybody gotten on to PWR and asked them to make something custom? with intanks and outlets n blah blah blah?

PWR do a G35 radiator.

I spoke to them about a custom radiator and even measured up the stock one, but $1k + shipping with a possibility of it not fitting is not a risk I was prepared to take.

On the positive side, I believe that their G35 radiator retails for under $650USD... in the US, so should be significantly cheaper here you would think....

what does the nismo thermostat open at ?

i know the r33's doesnt even think of opening until circa 79C anyway. more than likely the same principle applies.. meaning theres no flow around the engine until your hitting that temp anyway.

sometimes no thermostat is better.

im thinking 90C even though its not far off boiling temp.. isnt that far fetched for the running temp of this engine.

No thermostat, is almost always worse, car takes forever to heat up, if it ever does. Rich fuel mixture uses heaps of fuel, as you never get out of cold start map, washing oil off bores, allowing rings to score everything. Not a single good thing there...

Don't forget your cooling system is pressurised, water will not boil at 100deg, under pressure.

good point!

im too used to working on older v8's daleo that dont have computers and run hot normally. so different principle i guess.

well then a lower temped thermostat should be sufficent then ?

I'm not really a fan of those either, in extreme cases they can cause similar problems to no thermostat, if the opening temp is low enough. You're only masking issues of an inadequate cooling system, either not enough water volume or not enough heat shedding ability. Both of which you can correct with an appropriately sized, well designed aftermarket core.

scott said to go where you went :( he said its a little more but they make sure it fits which i wouldnt mind spending the extra couple of hundred on, if that

Nismo thermostat opens at 68 degrees. The stock one opens at 78 degrees.

Cheers

Andy

on the nismo site it says it opens at 62c and standard nissan Thermostats open at 76.5c. I wouldve thought 62c would be abit cold right?

It is a little more that a Chinese unit, but they use great core's, workmanship is of high quality and a full custom radiator for just over $700 ain't too bad IMO.

PLUS I still have my old one which you can take to the to use as a template (to in-tank trans though - it is in my current radiator)

I guess you were looking at a US site?

The Mishimoto VQ35 thermostat opens at 62c... which causes all kinds of issues for our cars, doesn't it Scott!

There are a few of us running the Nismo units with no issues whatsoever. Mine has been in for over a year and a half with no concerns :D

i thought i'de just have to give them the car and they make and install. using the one in the car as a template. i'm not too comfortable with doing something like the radiator by myself. i know it isnt a big job. but still new too it i dun wanna f**k anything up.

i duno it was a Nismo official site though. i wouldve thought if it was american they wouldve outlined temps in farenheit(or however its spelt) but they said 'C'

$700.00 for a radiator(for our car) i would be happy with. cant find anything for our cars easily or cheap .. whats IMO lol

    • Block bump. $400. As above cyl 6 needs bore or sleeve.
    • I would think making the argument that the travel is limited by a spring flexing against a spring perch as "the same method". Later on in the document they do state that the spring can't bind on full bump travel and cannot come loose in full rebound travel as well. (which is all very sensible). The laws are actually pretty sensible and reasonable. It's just that the people who enforce and check them don't actually read them or know them accurately. "Oh, coilovers? Instant fail mate. Don't even need to look at it." - Guy who will be instantly reported by me. There is probably merit to people who do get defected for height also get defected for the suspension in that state that allows it. I did never consider the people who are complaining about coilovers being picked on are also running around at 50mm off the floor.
    • I think given SAU's knowledge of E85 we can strongly conclude that 10% ethanol in almost any situation is entirely fine. Almost all of the myths against E85 were overblown, let alone E10.
    • From your link See bold text, is this referring to damper settings, if so that may a issue for "some" inspectors, I cannot see aftermarket coilovers having the evidence that "must be available that its functional performance is equivalent to the original" Maybe just remove the adjustment knows and hope for the best???? Meh 5.2 Suspension travel In all instances, modifications to a vehicle’s suspension must ensure the integrity of the system and not compromise the ride quality. At least two thirds of the original suspension travel should be maintained in both directions (rebound (i.e. extension) and bump (i.e. compression)), and rebound must be limited by the same method used by the vehicle manufacturer or if this is not practicable due to the nature of the modification, an equivalent method. If an alternative method is used, evidence must be available that its functional performance is equivalent to the original.
    • They actually don't - They adhere to VSB14 rules just like Victoria. The rules are against CABIN adjustable height, and it quite clearly states that the height has to be within parameters. I asked the VASS engineer to confirm this when I got my car engineered and they refused to engineer the coilovers because they didn't meet the requirements for requiring engineering. (mine are height adjustable.) People "Not wanting to bother" with "Actually reading/knowing/adhering to the rules" should result in fines and immediately losing the ability to issue blue slips and/or RWC's in Vic.
