What's the story with getting the standard RB20DET turbo recon'd - is it worth while? is there anything anybody can do with them to make them better etc or should i just keep an eye out for an RB25DET turbo? It's just that i can get my hands on a spare RB20 one cheap and was going to just get it recon'd and throw it on when mine goes?

I have found my std RB20 turbo to be very reliable, countless track days and 150,000kms and when i took it off it was still in good dondition, save for the marks on the leading edges of the compressor which indicates to me the HKS Air Filters do not perhaps filter as well as say a K & N.

If you keep boost under 14psi, it would seem RB20 turbos are the least fragile of the ceramic RB turbos (just an observation of mine)

So i dont see any reason to go and buy/build up a turbo in case your current one lets go, that said if your ready for an upgrade now, then like any Garret based turbos the RB range of std turbos can be fiddled with as far as steel T3 turbine, and bigger compressor wheels fitted, with machining of the housings to suit.

Speak to local turbo shops to give you details of their experiences, turbo based RBs are popular in OZ so plenty of shops have played with trim/wheel combinations for good results... then again you can always buy an off the shelf Garret GT BB turbo to ensure a known qty, as high flow std turbos can sometimes be woeful things

    • This is a recipe for disaster* Note: Disaster is relative. The thing that often gets lost in threads like this is what is considered acceptable poke and compromise between what one person considers 'good' looks and what someone else does. The quoted specs would sit absurdly outside the guards with the spacers mentioned and need  REALLY thin tyres and a LOT of camber AND rolling the guards to fit. Some people love this. Some people consider this a ruined car. One thing is for certain though, rolling the guards is pretty much mandatory for any 'good' fitment (of either variety). It is often the difference between any fitment remotely close to the guards. "Not to mention the rears were like a mm from hitting the coilovers." I have a question though - This spec is VERY close to what I was planning to buy relative to the inboard suspension - I have an offset measuring tool on the way to confirm it. When you say "like a mm" do you mean literally 1mm? Or 2mm? Cause that's enough clearance for me in the rear :p I actually found the more limiting factor ISNT the coilover but the actual suspension arms. Did you take a look at how close those were?
