Hey,

Pity I didn't make it to end of stage 1 due to my GTR decided it like to spit black smoke (I'm seeing mechanic tomorrow about this).

I ended up going through this road by tow truck and $600 poorer!

Many thanks to John (ssxricho) for telling me not to drive home, I made it to the lodge safely and this black smokeshow sure did attract people!

So, what a cruise I had and it was my first!

Cheers

Grant

Peter who tagged along with me reckons it's exhaust manifold gasket, so will need to have a chat with Trent @ Status tomorrow if possible to find out more.

Yeah my bank balance is going to cop quite a beating soon... I've just got hit by 'GTR tax hike!'

Gotta say, the dude could drive! we played cat and mouse (I was the cat) for about 4km i guess, before he pulled over and waved me past. We had already lost the 34 and the L plater got stuck behind the Daepoo I think (bummer)

Hahaha I was in the R34 GTR. It was so painfully slow behind that Daewoo going at 20 kmh with no-where to overtake. I decided that instead of eating up perfect mountain twisties at boring speeds, I sat in one of the turn-offs for 10 mins, then started again at full-throttle.

When I caught up, it was just the L-plater behind the Daewoo. Was he the one who got pulled over on the way into Apollo Bay? Overtook them both eventually, but then noticed the L-plater going the wrong way back to Melbourne eg., not the Geelong way. Caught up with the M3 and R33 later on.

Heard someone else got pulled over at the lodge.

We were meant to follow Phil for Stage 1 but others started leaving first, so I just ended up following them. I think Phil ended up being last in the Stage 1 convoy

@Count Grantleyish

Damn, $600. Time to get roadside assist. Would've been more expensive to drive it all the way back to Melb and risk something really going wrong though. Let us know what went wrong, cuz none of us Stage 1'ers really had a clue when you pulled over.

Also, We've mentioned this before, but get a decent CB ppl! I think JamesK and I are the only ones with decent 5watt ones with a proper 20 cm antenna. He recommended it to me, and was only $80 off eBay, and works a treat. I think they are called FD-460 or FDC-460. The crappy 0.5-1W ones that most people had with the 1 cm nub antennas couldn't transmit for shit. They are more for kids playing hide-n-seek, not 2km long convoys in mountainous radio-blocking areas. All we got was static on our end half the time.

About roadside assist, when Dave (sarumatix) rang RACV, they said they won't tow it further away from Apollo Bay for some reason, I asked my dear mother to ring RACV, she got the same answer.

Besides I doubt RACV would put the GTR on tilt tray with care considering mine is a 'bit' low.

So, it was awesome weekend Peter and I has enjoyed ourselves (except for waiting 2 hours for tow truck to arrive!).

Will update what I'd broke on the thread I made in VIC forums.

BTW, Citywide FTW, Chris does really understand low cars.

Cheers

Grant

Huh? As in, they would only tow it to Apollo Bay? That sucks. Haha, what do you guys reckon about paying Benno to come as official SAU-VIC cruise mechanic? With his GTR expertise and driving a van full of spare parts? 50 members, each pay an extra $10, that's a cool $500 for Benno, and for us piece of mind that he should be able to fix more things with just a pair of jackstands, screwdriver and wrench than your average mechanic on GOR with no import experience.

That sucks. Tell me about it!

Not a bad idea actually but I was the only one that had this problem, but still not a bad idea...

Read bold text.

Well, you never know who will break down. It's like russian roulette. The person who does break down will thank god he was there - but it could be any of us without the benefit of hidnsight. I would be more than happy to pay $10 for the tiny chance that my car will break down on a cruise, 200 km from Melb.

Awesome weekend away.

Thanks to Wayne for organizing and Ash for the BBQ, and thank to IMSLY for letting me use your jack. Was good to see familiar faces and meet lots of new people :)

Hope you get your GTR sorted soon Grant :D

Yeah, I just talked to my mum, she said RACV would allow tow to Apollo Bay then wait for couple of days to have it towed to desenation of my choice. It was my first breakdown far away from my home, first thing I wanted was my GTR tucked into my garage (it is now).

Hey, did you help me on rocker cover thing? If so, thanks for that.

It was an awesome cruise. So glad I stayed overnight, had lots and lots of fun, and it was good to meet a few people and see some new faces :)

Thanks Wayne for organising it and Ash for your sauages :D And everyone else who helped and all!

Shit Charles, great job shooting while driving! I tried 2 times with the SLR and while they turned out well, I didn't quite like the idea of me dropping it while doing 100km/h, hell I don't like the idea of dropping it at all lol. Next time I think i'll bring the compact as well ;)

Good pics though mate.

I thought that might have been the case, one minute you were there, and then you were gone lol

I saw that car too but it wasn't the L plater or that would have meant he got in front of you somehow. I gave em a thumbs up when I passed them. I didn't even see the M3 and I caught up to the first group of drivers??

That was one of the black 32GTR's I don't think the cop was too happy with him ;)

I think Phil ended up being last in the Stage 1 convoy :DYep Mick and I sat at the corner where we turned off to go through the otway's and he didn't turn up so that's when we made the decision to boot it (after the cops rolled past pointing at us) then we caught up to all of you and the broken GTR :)

Hard wired with magnetic antenna FTW!! That's what i'll be getting next

Oh and thanks to Ash for bringing the UHF for me, pitty they were both flat! lol!!!

First GOR cruise eva, i did both stage one n two, first of all HUGE thanks to wayne for organising it 10/10 for the organisation really well planed, and thanks ash for the bbq awwwwsome kabana! had a ball throughh the twisties! unfortunet bout the little bad luck i had which i dont want to mention n if anyone knows what im talkin bout please dont either. guys on stage two, see that green ss coppa? he pulled some rondom over, then two seconds later he was up my ass lol! and it was the same cop who was in the unmarkered xr6 turbo the day before. anyways cant wait for the next one!! p.s who ever hasnt been, you should definetly come to the next one

Haha system doesn't let me quote within quotes. I stopped at the crossroads to consult my GPS. That's when the L plater drove past me and headed down the wrong direction lol. A minute later the R33 with the CF bonnet and the M3 went down the other (correct) way, so I followed them. They had stayed behind a bit longer with the broken R33 GTR.

Hehe thanks mate :D

I just strap the camera onto my wraist and stuck my arm out the window and snapped a couple lol.

I chose not to bring the SLR as I was driving by myself and I knew I wouldn't be able to do that with a SLR lol :)

LOL, it didn't take that cop too long to issue a ticket to the guy in the commodore and quickly chased us. I was just shitting myself when he was a couple of cars behind me, I knew he was there, so I didn't over take that truck and drove at the speed limit. Then when the road split into 2 lanes, he drove up next to each one of us, and looked at us lol. Then he went in front of me (behind you and shane) and was just waiting for you guys to do something illegal, lucky neither of you did tho. But I'm sure he was just targeting you and shane, as this other Falcon and Commodore went over the speed limit and overtake but he didn't do anything.

    • Here is the mess that I made. That filler there was successful in filling dents in that area. But in the middle area. I can feel dents. And I've gone ocer it multiple times with filler. And the filler is no longer there because i accidently sanded it away. I've chased my tail on this job but this is something else lol. So I'm gonna attempt filler one more time and if it doesn't work I'll just high fill primer the door and see where the issues are because guidecoat is of no use atm.
    • Ok, so I think I sort of figured out where I went wrong. So I definitely overthinked it, and I over sanded, which is probably a large part of the problem. to fix it, I ended up tapping some spots that were likely to be high, made them low, filled them in, and I tackled small sections at a time, and it feels a lot better.    I think what confused me as well is you have the bare metal, and some spots darker and some are lighter, and when I run my finger across it, it' would feel like it's a low spot, but I think it's just a transition in different texture from metal to body filler.    When your finger's sliding on the body filler, and crosses over to the bare metal, going back and forth, it feels like it's a low spot. So I kept putting filler there and sanding, but I think it was just a transition in texture, nothing to do with the low or high spot. But the panel's feels a lot better, and I'm just going to end up priming it, and then I'll block it after with guide coat.   Ended up wasting just about all of my filler on this damn door lol
    • -10 is plenty for running to an oil cooler. When you look at oil feeds, like power steering feeds, they're much smaller, and then just a larger hose size to move volume in less pressure. No need for -12. Even on the race cars, like Duncans, and endurance cars, most of them are all running -10 and everything works perfectly fine, temps are under control, and there's no restrictions.
    • Update: O2 sensor in my downpipe turned out to be faulty when I plugged in to the Haltech software. Was getting a "open circuit" warning. Tons of carbon buildup on it, probably from when I was running rich for a while before getting it corrected. Replaced with new unit and test drove again. The shuffle still happens, albeit far less now. I am not able to replicate it as reliably and it no longer happens at the same RPM levels as before. The only time I was able to hear it was in 5th going uphill and another time in 5th where there was no noticeable incline but applying more throttle first sped it up and then cleared it. Then once in 4th when I slightly lifted the throttle going over a bump but cleared right after. My understanding is that with the O2 sensor out, the ECU relies entirely on the MAP tune and isn't able to make its small adjustments based on the sensors reading. All in all, a big improvement, though not the silver bullet. Will try validating the actuators are set up correctly, and potentially setting up shop time to tune the boost controller on closed loop rather than the open loop it is set to now. Think if it's set up on closed loop to take the O2 reading, that should deal with these last bits. Will try to update again as I go.
    • More so GReddy oil relocation kits, sandwich plates, etc. all use 10AN fittings. And same, I've only used 10AN and my car sees track work (circuit, doing laps, not 10 sec squirt business).
