first thing i noticed was on mainly cold starts on idle it stutters and pops at the exhaust

then i noticed on gentle driving it accelerates smoothly, but once i put my foot down it stutters badly and goes no where.

this happens when i hit full boost mainly

i was thinking shit spark plugs?

would appreciate any help asap

the pops in the exhaust have been there for aslong as i remember.

the stutter on idle on cold starts i noticed it about a week or 2 after the timing belt and water pump were replaced with new ones.

this part "on gentle driving it accelerates smoothly, but once i put my foot down it stutters badly and goes no where.

this happens when i hit full boost mainly" i noticed it months ago but has been getting worse ever since...

i have changed the intake pipe a couple of times during the past few months (from rubber to steel to rubber and now rubber with steel piece in it.

i also changed the afm (mine broke) and put stock airbox back on. i did this a few days before the timing belt was replaced

Something else you should consider is the factory 12.5psi boost cut.

Will cause major issues while at full boost.

Although, it does sound like a vacuum leak causing the dodgey idle etc.

Check for vacuum hoses that you might have not reconnected and check to make sure the timing has been set correctly. You may have just one problem causing everything or you may have a few problems all working together.

Hey There,

I had the same thing happen to mine after having the timing belt and water pump done, turned out it was the ignition timing was out by a quite a bit. I was thinking coil packs, sparks plugs, fuel pump etc $$$$ before finding the timing was out, I'd get your timing checked before running out and spending money unnecessarily. Hope that might help. cheers

    • Possibly avoid using a Cometic one unless the deck/head surface are perfectly flat. I did have a look just then and forgiving gaskets such as Tomei or Nitto don't exist for the FJ20, however the Bar-Tek or Kameari ones look good and might do the trick.
    • Because pipe threads for pipe things. M threads for bolt things. Throw some teflon sealant onto it and dust your hands off knowing you did the right thing, instead of going twice around the block to achieve a result using the wrong things. Of course, all of these solutions are ignoring the fact that the minimum thread pitch we're talking about here is 1.25mm, with the 1/4" in NPT or BPS being out around 1.4mm. You will need to know that the boss you're tapping has enough thickness for at least a few threads. That's one of the reasons that 1/8" is commonly used - because the pitch is <1mm. And why would you look to use 1/4" NPT in a BSP country anyway? Ugh.
    • Just throwing around ideas, does it need to be in the compressor cover? Why not the hot side piping?
    • 1/8NPT drill size = 8.7mm. Since the hole got messed up by me, it’s probably around 9mm.    So 1/4” NPT would be next step. A drill size of around 11mm would be preferred there which is not way of my M12 (drill 10.5mm and tap M12 threads)
