hey all..

i have been reading and searching.. both here and google..

now i have purchased tomei poncams for a s2 rb25det..

now i believe tomei classify the s2 poncams for the late 97model rb25 with the plastic cas..

so i have read u can mod the wires on the cas and fit the plastic cas on..

1- can the cas be modded to fit?

2- will the hks exhaust cam gear i got still fit on?

3- if i buy a inlet cam gear can i remove the vct (rb25 in a r32 running no vct from nisstune)?

cheers

ok well its not backwards for me atm...

im not running vct and it doesnt bother me..

so can i rewire the s3 cas? or should i sell the poncams and get s1 cams?

cant see it being an issue. I run R34 GTR's off R32 gtr ecus's....

Get two cam gears and spent some time on the dyno, you can get the cams to work well without vct as this dyno graph shows.

All the CAS does is tell the ECU where TDC is for each cylinder, and where each degree of crank rotation is. So, basically, a CAS is a CAS.

If you don't want to run VCT, simply leave the electrical connection off the VCT solenoid.

thanks status, i have a hks exh cam gear atm so ill hit up for a hks inlet to boot..
If you have bought RB25 Poncams for VCT than no you can not simply take the VCT off and put a cam gear on there. Why would you want to do that though, its a step backwards.

As I said above, you can not fit a normal cam gear to replace the VCT gear. The VCT gear and camshaft is special because it has a single bolt that goes into the centre of the camshaft. Cam gears have four small bolts that go into the camshaft, like on the exhaust side. So how are you expecting to fit it?

The main advantage a RB25 has over a RB26 is the VCT, so why would you not try and keep it if you can. If you allready have an ECU that doesn't support VCT just get an aftermarket controller to run it.

So really you only have a couple of options.

If you want to get rid of the VCT completely and fit an aftermarket cam gear, you need a different intake camshaft not made for VCT (RB20 or RB26).

If you are keeping that camshaft you either just leave it as it is without running the VCT or you get it running.

They are your options.

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
