Hey all,

After reading the latest GT-R issue of HPI magazine where there were 2 cases in the magazine where they suggest you take off the boost restrictor off an R32 RB26DETT for extra boost (almost 1bar, perfect for stock ceramic turbos apparently). I thought I'd go and see if my car (R32 GT-R), which is pretty damn stock, still had this little restrictor on it. And turns out it had. It's clearly marked by a yellow line. You can feel it's there. I simply took the hose off the boost solenoid thingy. Then used plyers to push the little boost restrictor along the hose until it popped out. It's a tiny little brass spacer looking thing. Nothing more nothing less. It has a tiny hole through the centre (thus restrictor!). I put the hose back on. Easy done.

Just came back from a drive around the area I live in and wow. Amazing difference! It goes a lot harder now. Amazing. I am stoaked! Boost guage needle goes all the way to the top too now. Just awesome!!!

I had read threads about it on this forum. And like all forums it's always confusing to read the threads as 1/2 of the people say do it, and the other half say don't do it, it's dangerous etc. Well... best way sometimes is to try these things yourself. And so I gave it a go.. and I'm VERY happy I did!!!! It only took 5 minutes to do too. And would be easy to replace as well if I ever wanted to revert back to stock.

Whoot!

justinfox , r33 gtrs have the restrictor in as well dont know about r34s though . now that u removed it get a boost gauge that will read at least 20psi cause if u have a 3" exhaust hi flow cat u will find it may boost to 1.2 bar . ur turbos will not last very long at that boost so be very careful u'll end up with busted engine .

yeah an aftermarket gauge would be a good idea...

So turns out I am running a Mines chip + very large exhaust. The HPI magazine article specifically says that the Mines chip makes taking off the boost restrictor safe. But I would like a boopst guage that read over 1bar to be safe so any suggestions peoples?

I'd love it if the boost guage could replace the stock one. I somehow doubt this is possible? I really don't want to clutter the interior with another guage which will stick out like buggery. Any suggestions on a subtle boost guage/position?

justinfox: please take this advise seriously because I only want to tell you once, go and buy an Apexi AVC-R boost management system. Dont listen to anything anyone else says. It is goign to be the best $800 you ever spent. Go read up about it, make some calls and ask industry people what they think of it.

Mount it sitting in the middle of your dash or you can mount it in front of your air con vents.

It is the ONLY responsible thing to do if you own a GTR.

dont ya just love boost??? boost is the best bang for buck mod you can ever do to a turbo charged car  most of the time its FREE but with everything good there are side effects - "the candle that burns twice as bright, burns half as long" :D:(:)

as for the avcr. couldn't agree more. i've carried over my avcr from the wrx to the gtt and its an amazing piece of gear. pity my installer crossed over the throttle position and rpm wires! duh! in any case i have 1 gripe with the avcr and that is, its too big. wont fit into a standard din slot so it sits in my glovebox.

I don't think I really need a boost controller? Overkill? I will look into this a little more though in any case. I doubt taking off that little restrictor will make my car boost so much more. If I do blow the turbos... then I will just have to get new ones which don't have ceramic bits!

    • Thanks Dose.....    I appreciate it!!
    • I'll probably be putting the shit box back on the dyno again soon, I want to dial in the closed loop boost control properly. I'll have a camera facing the car/motor for fun too. Just note, there are essentially 3x 10AN inlets going into the catch can and 1x going back to the intake pipe. Most of the time the catch can "return" to the sump actually is the crank case breather, pushing air out.
    • I have the R3C with a Nismo slave and by no means does it behave like a stocker, it ain’t THAT bad. On take off just give a bit more throttle than you would say a coppermix and it’s fine. It will not slip though.
    • Okay. Final round of testing done. Got a friend to hook up a fancy scanner to the car and we also ran some compression and leakdown tests, she is healthy.  The MAF was definitely the culprit. So for future reference anyone with similar issues that find this thread. I suggest the following steps, in order of affordability:   Check your spark plugs for any fouling, replace plugs if they are bad or re adjust the gaps making it narrower (0.8mm would be good). Check every coil's resistance with a multimeter. It can be done by probing the IB and G pins on the coil pack. Resistance should be around 1.4 (+/- 0.1) Ohms Check the MAF. If you have Nissan connect or a good scanner with the 14 adapter it should allow you to see the voltage on the MAF reading should be around 1.1 - 1.2V when car is idling. But if you don't, buy a new MAF from Amazon and test, then return it. (For instance, I got a Chinese one for $40 that was reporting 1.3v on idle). If you still have scanner, you can run tests on the injectors to see if they are working, just remember to unplug the fuel pump fuse/relay and have no pressure on the line. Then listen for the noises that the injectors make. Clean/replace injectors as needed. Once you find the issue and fix, order thousands of dollars worth of OEM parts to refresh unrelated things (Optional)   PS: Thanks to the absolute legends of this forum for the responses and help to someone that went a bit over their head. (me)
    • Ha ha ha, so they stopped the bearings spinning on the one you want, but then decided the crank hub should slip instead 😛   Stick to RB, at least you can work on it yourself. And now it doesn't smell of vapour   Also I still believe there's a chance your new flap doesn't "pop", as even though the engine might breath hard, it has a direct path with no restriction to the inlet, which when on boost should pull a bit of suction for you. If you do get pressure in the catch can id be very intrigued. Time to put a boost gauge on it, and a session at the track, then solid cover your vent and do another session
