Guys, my exhaust is way too loud (it came with the car). First few days it was cool driving around like i was some kind of 1000hp dragster but now it's just plain annoying and disturbing, starting to get embarassing as well. Also bad for the neighbours, pedestrians, and other motorists.

Not sure what the brand is, i've been told by the seller it's some kind of HKS cat back. But it is time for it to go, i remember ripping tissues in 1/2, rolling them up, then plugging my ears with them on long cruises. Yes it is THAT bad. I estimate roughly 115dB at 4500RPM.

Please nominate or recommend a cat back or muffler system you think has a very nice note (hopefully retaining the RB tune) and posseses at least decent performance characteristics. I've had enough.

Had a browse around Youtube to get rough exhaust notes and i seem to like these:

Nismo NE-1

Tommy Kaira M30

ARC100

Mine's SILENCE VX PRO TITAN II

Not that most of them will be in my price range i don't think...

Pics of current fart bomb (one without and one with silencer, sorry about the angles):

Nismo NE-1 / Fujitsubo / Veilside / HKS Priest (Oval shape mufflers) will keep the noise down for you at the same time keep the good exhaust flow.

From the photo, your exhaust has got silencer on it. I''d be very surprise if its more than 100dB. My Trust Ti-R titanium catback with highflow cat only managed 93dB.

Anyway, for best sounding when opened and quiet exhaust, you cant go pass Kakimoto Regu06&r. They look great with the titanium finish too! From memory, these are around 1.2k brand new.

If you're after a titanium exhaust, Security is selling his Ti-R for a very affordable price.

Hey guys first of all thanks for the replies. Not really looking into a titanium exhaust for now, not really worth it for a P plate car.

@ mad082, yeah bit i love the shape of a decent sized cannon though :( Also with a custom exhaust shop made muffler, you don't know the note it's going to produce.

@ (OO)SKYLINE(OO), cool, i'll have a look into them.

@ istdercollen, yeah but if it sounded like that i wouldn't mind :w00t:

@ Brandon, yes the silencer was on for some time but i have removed it because it is too restrictive and noticably restrictive too. I don't like the Regu06&R because of the tip, it's like a condom (no offense).

Hey mate, i did a bit of research and Youtubing of those exhausts. They are too quiet and don't bring out the RB tone enough. The Fujitsubo was alright:

I would kill for an exhaust that sounds like the Mines.

Anyone heard of Remus? Would they fit on a Skyline?

On the way, i found that the Amuse exhaust sounds pretty good but probably unaffordable (similar note to Mines Silent VX Pro):

EDIT: :D The Mines exhaust is $4.4k AUD delivered from Nengun. FML.

Hey bro, got any pictures of the back of your car or the exhaust/muffler itself? Would be sweet!

All that comes to mind is Apexi N1:

Also what would you rate the exhaust out of 10 including all factors such as sound quality and performance? Thanks.

LOL, that's probably the same noise level as mine right now. Just got a complaint today by neighbour :D Really needs to go.

Here is a video of my exhaust noise (lot louder in person):

I thought you wanted to keep the noise down..?

Remus make a decent exhaust, they make them for WRX's and BMW's, from memory.

I believe that is the Powerhouse Amuse exhaust you posted, sounds nice!

With Mine's, you are expected to pay a lot.

Kakimoto is a good brand, quiet and free flowing. Got one on my 32 gts-t. That's my pick.

HKS Silent hi power apparently sounds pretty good while not ripping your eardrums and a few people on here have them.

Yup, Remus also make for VWs.

Yeah, a lot of people seem to like Kakimoto here with comments like 'sounds like tits' LOL

ALRIGHT, after more hours of searching i have divised a plan, and that includes anyone else with sound level issues!

The solution is buy a muffler and strap it on.

Original idea from this thread:

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/R3...p;hl=Nismo+Ne-1

Muffler from this site, located in NSW, but if you are in Victoria, Sabbadin Automotive will do this for you:

http://www.smb.net.au/ovalmufflers.htm

According to the thread, this muffler will keep your flow to almost the exact same level but quieten down the noise.

Just went around asking and getting quotes on how to quieten down the car a bit. Apparently a turbo makes an exhaust a bit quieter, which kinda explains my noise. But then again i am using stock R33 RB25DE extractors and up-pipe they are 3 inch. Catback is also 3 inch.

Looked at 3 muffler shops, 2 of them said that adding resonators or mufflers in the middle won't decrease the sound, so they offered to make a custom exhaust (2.5" catback) comprising of resonators topped off with a muffler and tip. ~$400

1 of them said that adding a hotdog (resonator) will decrease the sound a bit . They offered to either add the resonator or change my cannon to a Magnaflow muffler with a tip. $450.

Pretty confused now...

yeah resonator wont drop noise much but will give it a nice burble note which is good, and magnaflow mufflers are pretty good for the price

You should get a smaller pipe , 3 inch is too big for an N/A 2 ltr...get a 2.5inch and decent muffler on the back ,not a cannon and youll be fine..Should sound good actually, especially with extractors. Maybe a resonator in the middle wont hurt but not essential.. And it doesn't need to be expensive at all

Id go with this option... >_<

""they offered to make a custom exhaust (2.5" catback) comprising of resonators topped off with a muffler and tip. ~$400""

Though should only be 1 resonator..

And get a chrome tipped magnaflow...

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
