Hey everyone.

I've got a 32 gts-t that I bought several months ago, but I don't actually have my licence yet, I'm on my Learners (have been for a while - laziness) and haven't got around to getting my Ps yet because I haven't been working.

Now with the new laws that are coming in, I'm not going to be able to drive my car until I'm on my full licence, as I can't get my Ps in time before September 4, the date the laws are in effect from.

My basic, rough plan is to remove the turbo on the RB20 and just drive it N/A for a couple of years, and spend that time working on the body/suspension/brakes etc, and once I was on my full licence either look at putting the turbo back on or upgrading to a different motor. And yes I know it won't be fun driving an N/A 2L for 2 years.

1. Is this even a good idea or is it going to be a whole lot harder than I think?

2. What in particular do I need to change (turbo removal obviously, but manifolds, AFM, tune, exhaust (it has a 3" turbo back at the moment), throttle body?)

3. Are there any other factors I'm not aware of that will need addressing?

I don't particularly mind the stupidity of removing the turbo and then putting it back on again 2 years later, or if I lose a little bit of money, I just want to drive my car.

Cheers guys

Bad idea. Removing a turbo from an RB20DET engine will make it weaker than a factory RB20DE. You will have people in 1.3L cars out running you.

Sell the car or workshop it until you get on your fulls.

sell the car and buy a NA version. as iseekool said, a turbo engine running without the turbo will put out much less power than the NA version. i'm guessing it would be somewhere around 40 to 50kw at the wheels. in all seriousness a 1.3L car will more than likely be able to beat you in a race. it will be beyond being "not fun" to drive. it will be dead set shocking to drive.

you really should've done some research before buying the car.

ah touche I was afraid that might be the case. How much roughly for a RB20DE?

Edit: and by the way, I have a personal loan for the car that is far from paid off, and I owe more on that than the cars worth, hence the reason I haven't just sold it and moved on. I'd rather keep it and just keep paying the loan every week, then at least by the end of it I'll still have a car to show for it, not a 4k loss lol.

I bought the car turbo and with the intention of driving it turbo, why would I buy a turbo car originally and intend to convert it to NA straight away?

I wouldn't know the price for an RB20DE... but What I do know is that it would be damn cheap (almost scrap value maybe????) because they aren't that powerful in the first place, and there isn't much love for them unless they have a turbo.

If you cannot part with the car, I'd workshop it (keep in a garage) and work on it - maybe a few upgrades/fixes. By the time you are on your fulls you will have a nice car to drive.

But really selling it is the way to go....

You will get fined by the police regardless if you have the turbo in or not as the car's build plate shows it has a turbo... the the eyes of the law you are still driving a "turbo" powered car.

You are better off driving with the turbo on and just risking it and hope not to get caught - But I do not endorse that.

note: I'm not trying to be rude - but this has been covered many times before on these forums many times with other peoples experiences.

ya but i wasn't asking how to do it i was just asking if there were any particular things i needed to change when removing the turbo.

i might just do what you said, keep it and work on it for a couple years, at least when i get my fulls i'll have a really nice car.

and i'll just buy some cheap car in the meantime for a daily.

Yep. :(

Good choice.

By the time you are on your fulls you will have something quite special.

An exemption is the first thing I'm going to try for, but the government website about the new laws that I checked out made it sound as if you needed your Ps before the date AND had to own the car.

I might ring up somewhere and ask them if I'm going to be exempt because I bought the car months before.

didn't realise you were in WA where the restirctions are only just coming in. you'd be suprised how many dicks we get coming on here who buy a turbo skyline knowing that they can't drive it because they think you can simply pull the turbo off it and have it go like a NA.

    • After @Kinkstaah debacle, I'd never want to try and get it right 😛
    • The hood lines up with the fenders. The front bar doesn't perfectly line up with the fenders where the wheel arch is. You have to 'squeeze' the front bar 'in' as it wants to naturally flare out and be longer on the sides. There's a few threads where people notice this when they only swap a GTR style bumper and front bar. Unless you have genuine OEM items - you may be better served getting conversion kits. There are GTT bumpers to fit GTR hoods. There are GTR hoods (non genuine) to fit the GTT bracketry. MAY
    • The real question is, on some of those wild roads they call highways, how many times did a farmer in an old ute from the early 2000s blaze past you over double lines?   Tassie is a wild and really cool place, and after doing a work related road trip there January of 24, I understand why Targa Tasmania is ran there, and is so tough to do well at! We had a brand new Camry Hybrid that handled quite nicely, and thankfully weren't in an old car, because cresting some of those hills in a 100kmh zone for it to suddenly be like "surprise f**kers, this is a recommended 30kmh hard right turn" wouldn't be pretty. We weren't racing the Camry around, but we weren't slouching in the bends either. But my lord those old farmers know their old clapped out utes, and those roads, as they were absolutely hammering it!   You're also super lucky to make it up to Mt Wellingtong this time of year. It's often road closed with snow/ice! Also, I hope you hit up Salamander Road in Hobart for some insanely good food (I highly recommend the dimly lit Irish pub for a Guiness Pie, or even the bangers and mash!!!)   How long did the Ferry take to get across? I want to do a road trip of Tas on my own time, but I get horrifically sea sick, and I don't want me on the Ferry, just the car 😛
    • So far so good, about 30km on it so far and nothing out of sorts yet thankfully
