When I bought my R34 it was stock and yes, compared to an Evo 7, it felt slow due to the difference in turbo lag. You get a bigger kick in the ribs with a bigger single turbo rather than the smaller twins.

Truth is though, the R34 delivers the power differently and is quick and great fun too, especially when you do some mild modding as mentioned above. :)

Having had a 32 GTR & a 34 GTR and 2 Evo IX's, if you wanted bang for buck an EVO IX would be the car!

Spend 10k on an EVO and the same on a 34 GTR and the Evo will have its measure. Especially on the track.

I know you dont plan on doing that so much though.

I did miss the RB26, what i didnt miss though was the thought in the back of my head that this thing could blow up

any minute! The Evo is a much newer car and can carry passengers/kids no problems and with 272 cams, exhaust and

turbo is an absolute weapon that sounds very meaty.

Maybe like me though, you need to get a 34 to get it out of your system!

so davey, how slow did it feel and how improved was it with the mods? Im worried if i get one ill be dissapointed with the performance for the money.

Yeah, I can understand your worries... As I say, not slow as such, just a different sensation. However, the first mod I did was to up the boost to 1.0 bar with a boost controller (it came with a bigger exhaust when I bought it) and that gave it the same sort of speed feel as an Evo. After that it just gets even better.

The great thing I've found with the R34 though is that there's always more power to be had if you've got the appetite and the $$ for it and it needn't ruin the drivability. I'm still smiling smugly after 3 years...

I doubt you'll regret it!

my fear is running 1.0 boost on 10 year old car with aging ceramic turbos ..... and that it will stuff the engine with ceramic bits...... AND engine rebuilt = BROKE or Divorce or BOTH :(

this is when Evo 8 MR makes a lot of sense, but the heart says GTR !!!

for you, without a track near by you ll never be able to use the full potential of the GTR. then again, that goes for all sports cars.

slow? compared to a F1 car but value for money, one of the fastest cars around. stock R34s will go past 320kph.

huge power figures aren't going to happen as easily with such a small capacity. with 1/4 miles, 4wd will be slowing it down. for a drag car, i would look at something else, IMO.

however, with that being said, basic tuning will see a vast increase in power over stock. stock cars were heavily under-tuned. the strength of GTRs is the amounts of grip available.

pros:

-grip and track potential

-high response engine

-good power gains from stock

cons:

-huge power expensive

-requires a lot of work for serious drag racing.

-heavy

stock figures:

206kw engine.

0-100 ~5seconds

1/4mile to memory in the 12s but cant be certain.

though, im sure you ll get a better response from someone who actually owns one :laugh:

when you say the stock r34 doesnt pull like a single turbo car, how different is it?

My friend has a bmw 135i and its power delivery is so linear it doesnt feel like it pulls at all, but it is actually quite fast.

How much do they pull with the basic ecu/ebc/exhaust/intake mods?

hey Duncan why the change to an evo? how do the ix and 34 compare? Ill get an evo tme if i decide to go an evo again. What do u reckon?

For me cost/reliability/practicality were the determining factors.

I have a nice company 4x4 so the fact that my partner can drive the Evo meant i only

have to buy one car. When i had the 34 i had to buy her another new Prado which meant

more money. The costs of maintaining a 34 that sees 1 or 2 track days a month is fairly high,

The cost of getting a 34 quick enough to be competitive is also 3x what you need to spend on an

Evo.

TME's are a great thing, they just feel a bit dated inside for me as a road car. If i was getting a track only car i would definately buy a VI though.

Easy. Change the turbos before the inevitable happens.

got a 34 v spec2 with usual mods more than happy, you won't be disappointed if you like track days for the average joe it will lap all day no worries evo's are fast on the track but rb 26's have the sound

i used to have a r34 gtt than went to the r34 gtr that i have now and i couldnt be happier, mine is stock and only has a nismo dash and i was amazed that it felt alot quicker than my gtt and for something heavier it doesnt feel it it handles alot better with virtually no body roll i love it. ive grown very attached to this car compared to other cars ive owned.

Buy one......

Pros.... they are great cars and you'll love driving one.

Cons.... if you're a bit funny like me and love the car you won't want to drive it on public roads / park it anywhere out of sight etc/etc/etc :blink:

Couldnn't agree more, I love my GTR so much that after I spend hours detailing I find it sitting in the garage becasue I am too scared to drive it!

I don't think I could sell it though, I love driving it so much... It is also comfortable enough to drive almost anywhere.

    • It's funny, as Ive seen plenty of people use them in cheap builds on YT. And they actually go okay, even though a lot of other maxspeedingrods stuff is terrible. Those turbos seem reliable enough, the only part being, a good quality turbo that is "identical" to it, will out perform it day in and day out. In both a lower boost threshold, and the ability to flow more air at the same boost pressure. As a cheap cheap replacement, not a terrible choice. For cheap and shouldn't blow in a day, not terrible (like other eBay/Temu turbos) for low cost and still decent performance, that's where the question comes in to play from the results I've seen. I'd actually find it hilarious to buy one, and strap it to a paddock basher or some other cheap as POS originally NA car, and send it to the moon!
    • The maxpeedingrods turbo is cheap and bolts on to stock parts. I think you just need a bigger silicone coupler for the intake. Its a cheap china turbo, but it's been running on mine for almost 3 years at 16-19 psi.
    • What do they look like right after you've tried to start it with everything connected? Also post photos of what they actually look like.
