R34 Tiptronic Auto. Anyone Put A Shift Kit In Thiers?

hey guys my gf got a 34 with tiptronic auto. just wondering if anyone has had a shift kit put in thiers?? if so who did it, how much was it n did u get much improvement from it in fuel economy or performance n is it worth doing. just askin coz the stock auto feels a bit sloppy. in the mean time im gonna get the oil flushed n see if its any better.

I got what you might call maybe a "Stage 1" shift kit in my wagon (same gearbox but with a transfer case on the back).

Basically I took it to this guy in Bibra Lake who talked it up and then it turned out he hadn't seen one of these boxes before. So not knowing what galleries did what (there's more solenoids and valves than a 33 box) he did what he could, which was remove the accumulator plungers on the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts, and replaced them with welsh plugs.

It's made a huge difference, mostly on the 1-2 shift, I used to have to shift either early or bounce it off the limiter otherwise it would just slip (incidentally, even with all the slippage, he said the inside of the box was squeaky clean).

He didn't charge me much as we didn't achieve what we set out to achieve but to be honest, I'm not sure I would want any firmer shifts in my daily.. the place is called Global Automatics in Bibra Lake.

so it doesnt slip as much anymore while its in gear? n how harsh r the changes? like wheel chirping when it changes? did it improve fuel economy? also does the gear changing rpm change or is that to do with the computer?

It never slipped while in gear, there was just a massive flare from 1st to 2nd if the engine was making heaps of torque.. i.e. if it was on boost over 4000rpm it wouldn't want to go in to gear unless I backed off the gas or let it bounce the limiter once. Now it just gets the fuck in there!

Shifting is more positive and it would probably chirp 2nd if I didn't have 4WD. Put it in 2WD and it's highly amusing in the wet, as soon as it comes on boost, click 2nd and it shifts instantly then it's lunchbox super happy fun sideways time.

The 1-2 shift is harsher at slow speeds and I had to relearn how to drive.. I used to lift the gas on the 1-2 shift but if I do that now I nearly hit the car in front as it lurches hard.

It's not as full on harsh as say an MV Auto shift kit where the valvebody galleries are modified, but it's a very positive shift, no fucking around.

I would say it has improved economy somewhat but more importantly, it improved drivability tremendously!

Oh and when in tiptronic, the downshift to 2nd is INSTANT.

Edit: shifts may be nicer if you have stock ECU.. I have a Haltech that doesn't talk to the TCM so the ECU doesn't cut ignition when it comes time to shift, I also think that is why mine had so much trouble trying to shift into 2nd.

i just recently put shift kit in my 34 4 door. purchased the valve-body kit and the shift solenoid from M.V Automatics.

got it installed at Wangara Auto's.

its like driving a different car. gear changes are instant. 1st - 2nd can be a bit harsh but you learn how to drive it nicely.

the car will light up the rears going from 1st - 2nd now... :-) (of course this is on the track)

i went down this path as i drive a lot and like the ability to drive it like a manual or like an auto.

although i have no experience with auto skylines, a few years back when i had a auto commodore i had the box rebuilt with a street/strip shift kit + histall and it was definitely worthwhile doing!

it'll snap through the gears instead of sloppy lurching on shifts, way more satisfying to drive

if you can find a place that'll modify your torque convertor or go a proper histall it'd definitely be benefitial as far as getting it on boost from a standstill, i had a centrifugal blower on my commo which wouldn't start really moving til 3k but once i got the histall it'd just smoke the tyres off the line

All fast torque converters do a "more stall" which is basically a standard converter with the internals tweaked a tiny bit if a high stall isnt wanted. I've installed an MV shift kitted valve body into a 34 4 door and it was a pretty good piece of gear. To get it done by someone in perth give Allfast a ring as the guy that runs it also have a transmission shop down the road and he's quite good at what he does.

    • Agreed with the rest. Also at least based on my own research, there are no readily available stock or close-to-stock RB20Neo maps that you could download and use as a base were you to buy a complete standalone ECU, and the regular 20DET maps don't really work well so you'd need to take it to a tuner if you have no experience. I installed an AEM V2 on my 20Neo+T and had lots of headaches until I got it to run and idle properly but I've yet to remap it fully. You have to start building up your timing and fuel maps entirely from the ground up; even the ones for a 25 didn't work at all.
    • Got some decent progress after work yesterday and also today. Got the ECU all wired and passenger side interior all back together. Kept the wiring up nice and high to avoid people standing on it. Got the surge tank relays rewired and tidied up the pump wiring and cut a hole to bring the cables through.  I found a spare USB cable I had lying around so I decided to cut it up and see if I could use it for my CAN 1 bus. Turned out one of the pins I needed was to the shield of the cable so i cut it up and desoldered it and resoldered to the correct pins.  Had the issue with the powersteering hose hitting the A/C compressor and fan shroud. I pulled the bracket off and modified it to remove the front mounting point which now clears it all. Will keep an eye on it to see if theres any signs of fouling once it's up and running.

    • So today I went well outside my comfort zone (again) to replace my valve cover gasket.  I have had a big leak over the exhaust leading to a lot of smoke and smell every time I drove it. The leak was in the rear driver's corner.  The job wasn't hard as such, just a bit finicky and time consuming.  The old gasket was rock hard and broken right where the leak was.  The leaky corner had so much sitting oil in it.  The good news to my amateur eyes was no buildup or sludge under the cover. It all looked fairly nice in there.   I haven't started it yet. I ran out of light and body when putting the coils and injector loom back in. Probs only 30min left for the morning.  I was so nervous putting the cover back on, I must have lifted it 5 times to make sure the gasket was still seated properly. God it's going to be nice to be leak free and not make other traffic light queuers think my car is about to explode.
    • Gave the Mazda it's first wash, it will need some clay, a light compound, and polish polish to remove a few swirl marks, but that will be a job for when I have a full day to get my DA polisher action on
