ok so im about to build an RB30 for my stagea, need some advice....

engine is a NEO 25 head on a RIPS built 4WD block. car will pretty much be a daily drive, mainly after the torque as stags are pretty heavy....

so, i need a turbo, turbo manifold and head gasket (that i can think of right now...)

keeping stock injectors and afm for now, will upgrade at a later date when i do cams and a few other things.

what turbo would suit me? dont want overkill, just a nice responsive daily with a bit of punch if i need it. i also want it to be good enough for when i do upgrade injectors and stuff later but again, im not chasing huge power figures.

also need a manifold to suit said turbo, NEO and non-NEO are the same yeah? looking for a good quality low mount manifold, no cheap shit but doesnt have to be the most expensive thing out there.

headgasket - NEO head, keeping VCT, RIPS block with "hand selected" stock internals. what would be best? what compression would it be running?

oh yeh, also need a decent EBC...

any help would be awesome!

personally i'd go a gt30 turbo, but thats me. it all depends how much power you want later and what sort of boost threshold your after.

the cheapest decent quality manifolds around are probably the old hks low mount ones, i picked one up for 800 with a gate and screamer, strongest manifold i've ever seen. 6boost etc are good manifolds but with a new gate aswell they're close to 2k

rb26 or rb30 headgasket, lewis engines have old stock genuine 26 gaskets going real cheap at the moment

GT3540 is available at the virtually the same price as the GT3076 so future proof your engine with the 3540. The .63 housing will give you quicker response and will limit your top end to about 330 or so kw but that should do you. I believe you can low mount them with a spacer on your stock manifold and save up for a 6boost later. I have wastegate coming off the turbo housing.

Turbo selection: I would definitely go the GT3076R, with the 0.82 rear housing . Have it on my rb25/30 and couldn't be happier with the response and power. Currently my set-up peaks at 20psi and drops to 16psi, by red line, and is making 325rwkw; with the same response (if not better) as a totally stock rb25.

My engine has been fully built, though, and has all the "bells and whistles".

I am now going external gate, to hold boost steady till red line and see if i could get more out the package.

Need to ask:

What's so special about a "RIPs block" if all internals are standard? Seems to me, like a major expense for little benefit, if you're not going to build a "full house" engine :huh:. A block is a block, as long as the machinist does his job properly and is thorough.

PS: With your 4WD, you'll have an awesomely responsive package, that would be stupidly quick; you will not be disappointed! :ermm:

i was going to do a full ground up build and even bought a sump adaptor but then i found the rips block at about half its usual price. i bought it off a guy who planned to put it in his gtr but never got around to it so it just got stored in his shop. its never been used, has everything done to drop an RB26 head on and chuck it in a gtr. so all i have to do to it is the mods to run vct, assemble and drop into my car which in the long run, will save me quite a bit. i was a bit hesitant about the stock internals but seeing what they can handle in the rips cars, i decided that if it was good enough for them, its more than enough for anything ill ever do to my car.

on the manifold, id never considered using the stock one but i dont see why not. for now anyway. only question is, will it be the limiting factor in this equation or will the standard injectors be holding me back first? and where should i be looking for this spacer to make my turbo fit? for info: im also fitting a front facing plenum and a decent rising rate fpr.

for the turbo, would i be better off getting a gt35 something with the smaller housing for now and upgrade to a bigger housing later if required? or will a gt30 something suit fine now and later? i like the idea of future proofing with the larger turbo but as i said, im not chasing massive power figures. next step is likely to be cams, afm and injectors (and manifold if i dont do it now) and at the moment im not really planning anything further. i have other cars in the build for stupid power.

next question is - internal or external gate?? would an external setup be better or would internal be enough? internal now with stock manifold and run external with new manifold or stay internal? or external now and later? id like to avoid the extra cost if possible but at the same time i dont want to skimp on quality here. if external is the go, what do people reccomend?

35r for someone chasing response with a standard block? a .82 gt3076 has been proven good for 280-300rwkw in most setups, more than enough on a stock blocked daily.

i have a spacer and internal gate housing etc as a kit if you decide to go that way, pm me if interested

Injectors will give up first - manifold will handle up to 300kw. Why change the fpr?

You will have to modify the front pipe anyway to allow for the extra height of the 30 + adapter plate so if you have a split dump easy to fit an external wg.

Give Robbie at RIPS a call or an email and he will tell you what the cr is with a Neo head (provided you have the stock 30 pistons)

I would think the .63 version would give you all the power a stock RB30 can handle safely - need to go forged and balanced if you want 350kw+

I reckon a .63 housing would choke up on the 30, minimum on either GT30 or 35 would be .82.

Basically, listen to Al, he has the most responsive +300rwkw RB30 I've seen.

Stock injectors and AFM should get you somewhere around 240-260awkw, I'm getting close to this with the highflow on my Stag, which is another option for you but won't make 300kw or have as much punch as a GT30.

BTW unless you are upgrading AFM and injectors, 250awkw is all you'll get (well that's where mine ran out). but that is plenty to get a volvo moving around the suburbs

Good to know the stock injectors should be good for 250awkw.

One day my Stag will get an RB30 too, it sure needs it much more than the 32 does!

ill be happy with that for now, then save some more money, maybe do some things on some of the other dust collecting projects i have then go for stage 2.

anyway, sofar, a 3076r .82 sounds like the go, internal gate on standard manifold.

best places to buy at the moment anyone?

    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.      
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
    • But first....while I was there, I also swapped across the centre console box for the other style where the AV inputs don't intrude into the (very limited !) space.  Part# was 96926-4GA0A, 284H3-4GA0B, 284H3-4GA0A. (I've already swapped the top 12v socket for a USB bulkhead in this pic, it fit the hole without modification:) Comparison of the 2: Basically to do the console you need to remove the DS and PS side console trim (they slide up and back, held in by clips only) Then remove the back half of the console top trim with the cupholders, pops up, all clips again but be careful at the front as it is pretty flimsy. Then slide the shifter boot down, remove the spring clip, loose it forever somewhere in the car the pull the shift knob off. Remove the tiny plastic piece on DS near "P" and use something thin and long (most screwdrivers won't fit) to push down the interlock and put the shifter down in D for space. There is one screw at the front, then the shifter surround and ashtray lift up. There are 3 or 4 plugs underneath and it is off. Next is the rear cover of the centre console; you need to open the console lid, pop off the trim covering the lid hinge and undo the 2rd screw from the driver's side (the rest all need to come out later so you can do them all now and remove the lid) Then the rear cover unclips (6 clips), start at the top with a trim tool pulling backwards. Once it is off there are 2 screws facing rearwards to remove (need a short phillips for these) and you are done with the rear of the console. There are 4 plugs at the A/V box to unclip Then there are 2 screws at the front of the console, and 2 clips (pull up and back) and the console will come out.
