Hey All,

long story short I own a S13 and it's been a great car to me but times have changed and I'm probably going to sell it and replace it with a 4 door of some kind. The reason why I am after a 4 door is I need something with a bit bigger space and have 4 doors; it's just a constant pain only having 2 doors and not having the room in the car, but I guess Silvia's aren't meant to carry people or have heaps of room either.

I like to stay in the import scene of course; but the only probably is there aren't many 4 door imports out there. I've done some research over this time and have narrowed my choice down to a R34. The reason why I picked the R34 is because I like the style, it's newer compared to other 4 doors, it's in my budget, they are reliable and overall I've heard nothing but good things from them. I did take into consideration the JZX100 because they are probably the best 4 door import out there, but one major problem stopped me, which was the money and I can't really afford it.

My plans for the car are to keep it as a nice street car nothing more nothing less; it is going to be my daily so I don't want to attract attention by the poo poo. I don't want to spend bucket loads on a car because at this point in time I am saving for a house deposit etc.

My question is what is it like driving a R34 4 door, seeing basically they are all automatic would I be able to cope with driving auto daily; I would prefer manual but I really can't afford spending and extra $5,000 just to get it in manual. Do I need that extra power, do I need to get turbo or is a N/A fine just for my type of driving or does a N/A R34 4 door have absolutely no power and I need to spend a bit extra to get turbo?

That's probably it for now; love to know people's opinions on a R34 4 door. I'm open to all people's comments, opinions and thoughts so feel free to post your statement.

Thanks in advance.

Turbo's are cheap, so may aswell get one instead of getting a N/A and allways regretting it.

My wife had a 34 4 door as a daily for nearly 5 years, not a single problem with it (did coilpacks, but thats given for a 34). Nice comfy car to drive, the tiptronic is fun enuf, and they go pretty nicely. Quite inside, everything works well and you can take 4 adults, is still a squeze though.

Fuel consumption on long trips isnt bad, we could get 500kms from a tank, around town not so good, but you could never expect it to be.

As a daily, i would recommended them, JZX100's IMO arnt as nice inside, but outside look nicer when done up.

I have nearly bought one on 3 occasions over the last year, main thing stopping me was insurance would be $1200, and Im 27 with good ratings etc.

Just keep that in mind,

Also dont believe the km's on the ODO, a guy rocks up to the export places and changes them for $50, industry standard.

have seen turbo ones for $13,000 on road from a dealership, pretty good price really.

on carsales there is a 4 door with full R34 GTR running gear, mental mods, wants $32,000 last I checked. looks horn!

either get a turbo one or if you want to go NA get a commodore/falcon. perfect for day to day driving, costs bugger all to fix, insurance is cheap, and probably faster than the NA as well, and if it's adult passengers you are carrying, it will fit them in more comfortably as well as the extra torque will handle the extra weight without a worry.

r34 sedans are a great daily as mentioned...i do find that for adults there back leg room is tight thou....get a turbo version for sure.

jzx100 chasers are also great thou... look tough with rims and lowering... my bro owns one and it feels like it goes harder than the r34.. both have basic mods exhaust etc... only let down on the chasers is the interior does look tad old but is definatly more roomy... ;)

    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?

    • Hello!  i just finished manual swaping my r34 skyline with a r33 rb20de box(RB71C)box  When the car is running it squeaks crazy loud and it was smoking from the gearbox area. The gearbox is fine it was tested. The clutch slave cylinder seems like it doesn't fully releases the clutch. I want to ask if this noise is from the throw out bearing or could it be the clutch assembly or disk att.xFliq87Gzw6kImKBVqDebXkj0fBqymk0JaYeP3_3SlM.mp4
