As people have said dyno's are a relative tuning tool. The peice of paper is fit to wipe your ass with if it has no translation to on road /track improvements.

Noticed you have standard cast iron dump pipes, they don't help.

The cams are set to what? Basically the intake 2 deg adv & exhaust 6 deg retard ? If not thats roughly where they need to be with standard cams.

14psi on standard turbo's with some kms on them is asking for it. I wouldn't do that. You can make decent power 220 -230rwkw with 10 -12 psi and the turbo's are less likely to go pop. If you are bothered by the power then buy bigger new turbos.

When and not if they do go pop you have a good chance of needing a motor rebuild , as many have discovered over time.

Again, better to chase something about the cars driving characteristics than a sheet of paper with a number on it.

Bit of interesting information for you mate :(

I'm running 280rwkw, factory GTR dumps no problems (16psi or so)

There are plenty of cars running 330rwkw through R33 dumps also (GT-SS turbo/Garrett -9s)

I do believe the car I've purchased - and picking up tomorrow hopefully - has stock R33 GTR dumps and makes a lazy 350rwkw on some hybrid turbos :D

I wouldn't necessarily class them as a major issue at all.

100% agree with borrowed time RE: turbos - 1bar IMO is too much. Be happy with 12psi, and let the motor live

Not sure what they are set too :(

I agree 14PSI is too much on these turbos and will be getting a boost controller soon

Im not chasing numbers on a piece of paper, i just knew that the car is capable of so much more and after driving the car foe awhile you can feel all he is done is push the torque lower and leave the top end with nothing, IMO he did a half assed job and im not happy with it and in the end thats what matters

Dumps will be changed once i get -9s next yr.

i would like to only run 12psi looks like i need that boost controller

Hmm.. no argument that you can shove power through them if you have extra to spare, admittedly my only experience is with power 'increases' in swapping them and looking at the turbo flange overlaps on the 5 or 6 pair I've swapped ,they all were pretty wonky casts, not to mention the tight bends the stockers have as a design feature/flaw.

If the few I had were anything to go by then you could assume that the factory casting process isn't really precise, so there might be better and worse casts out there?

I heard the R34 dumps weren't so bad...

  • 2 weeks later...

Just a quick update,

Went back to the same tuner after being reassured that he would check it and see if there was anything wrong...after a day i get a phone call saying my power fc is screwed...so stock ecu back in

Dropped car off at a different workshop this morning to see if they can make any sense of it...get a phone call around lunch time saying the power fc is working perfectly and with a preliminary tune is making around the 250kW at all four wheels mark with more fine tuning to come and thats with boost wound back to 12PSI

Will report back with the end result

This has been a huge learning experiance for me and now have found the workshop ill be with forever

Thanks again for everyones input

I've said it before and I'll say it again, learn the art of tuning your own car. Get a wideband for $350 from the States and go for it. Read, learn adjust then read some more and so on. You'll pick it up. Sure, get a good tuner to do the basics on setup but fine tune yourself. The results will amaze you. Power Fc wins in the home tuner sector but I am just looking at the Vipec or something similar with self tuning mode and better control over the whole process.

Good call skylinecouple, I'm in the process of getting my tuned checked over by the manafacturers of nistune and learning how to do it in the process, only way to have complete confidence it has been done properly is to do it yourself, or be present during the entire tuning process and understand what they are doing.

UPDATE

Picked up my GTR this afternoon and we ended up making 260Kw at all four on 14PSI, but with my new boost controller in we have it set on 12PSI with the option of 8,10 and 14PSI

All i can say is that it feels great and drives brilliantly the guys at Pulse racing have done a great job and their service and help they gave me through all of this was impeccable.

Now its time to just enjoy the car :)

hehe after reading throught this im glad to hear its all good now man. what a bunch of idiots whoever you took it to before though, hey?

..

"shit boss i dunno whats wrong with it"

"just say his ECU is f*cked he wont know"

"sweet, now can i get back to watching porn?"

Can I suggest that everyone avoids this workshop from now on? Pretty massive difference, it isn't like they made the same power and one was just slightly smoother and had better fuel economy, thats 60 bloody kw and 190 knock!

Incompetence comes to mind, can I suggest that nobody ever goes to this workshop for anything?

    • Initially I thought having a pair of Recaro seats would be a big bonus, it turns out these do get a little uncomfortable on long journeys (my fault, not the seat). I had a look through the GSM Performance website at reclining seats and booked an appointment to visit their show room. I got the Recaro Sportster CS for the R34 from here, was very happy with the service received so of course a re-visit was in order. Unfortunately the two Corbeau seats I had chosen aren't on display but they had 4 other options available. Two seats dug into my back, one dug into my legs and the other was perfect. I also found out that Recaro seats use a larger bolt pattern so some adaption was required. Luckily GSM offer some universal adaptors that should solve this problem. I searched the interwebs for price comparisons and Corbeau themselves were the cheapest at £300 cheaper (for the pair). I asked GSM if they could price match, unfortunately they couldn't. I later received an email saying Corbeau would honour them the same discount, but the purchase was already made. I did however order the brackets from GSM, both arrived on the same day. I started with the passenger side seat, knowing this was going to be a little trial and error. There are 3 mounting holes at the front and 2 at the rear on these JURAN Racing seat rails.  With the adaptor brackets mounted, the allen cap bolts started to push into the seat, NOT GOOD!  The rear mounting holes lined up but there were issues at the front. The holes were 1/2 hole out, so the brackets got a tickle with the drill to modify the holes. The supplied bolts weren't going to be long enough and a spacer was needed to stop the adaptor bars from bending. A local fasteners company supplied be with some nylon spacers and longer bolts (M8x30, although these will be replaced with 35mm long shortly) A before and after I pre-drilled the front bracket before making a start on the driver's seat to save some time. And in no time at all that was in the car too. The all black seats have transformed the interior and these are MUCH more comfortable. The only downside with the new Corbeau seats is I sit a little higher, but I'll happily accept that over discomfort. The Youtube video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPyttKPktXA
    • All 3 I guess. The car came with the JASI Aero 4 door Type R Full Kit unpainted so this was one thing at the top of my list to complete then I noticed there were body panels parts for this kit so i picked them up along with some black mesh to fill in the front bumper and front side air vents. car is at a paint and body shop atm completing this work. Next I will be addressing the internal bells and whistles, great summer project I can do with the kids.  full interior removal - ,boys car sound deadening - pads and spray ,boys stereo, sound, lighting - Big 3, GTT or bigger alternator ,kids head lining - dye black add star lighting mod ,daughter. That's it for the next 5-6 months. I have some motor maintenance  work i have to plan out. oil filter relocation, gaskets, mounts. beyond that, mind is starting to turn over if i can use a DET intake plenum, block off turbo ports & pipe in a air intake.
    • roller coaster of a ride. Alarm system was removed & main harness was repaired where possible. still no fix just random successful starts. moved on to the replacing the ignition switch and relay. well all this troubleshooting & repair has been going on, the car is at a paint and body shop being pushed around. Ive been going down there on odd days after work to get it sorted.
