Pretty sure knock isn't a variable reported via CONSULT, knock control is just something the ECU does internally to pull timing (or switch to a knock map). I know Matt from Nistune has worked on reporting a knock value in the past, but that was Nistune specific.

Agree with above.

Depending upon your ECU type Nistune MIGHT be able to extract some knock data (even trace it into a map for you). But some (Z32, etc) ECU types have not been sorted yet. Nistune is not free but it's also a long way from expensive.

Oscilloscope

Learn the frequency of the knock you are seeing and you will recognise it every time. Either that or get your car tuned at EFI performance and you'll never have to worry about knock ever again

Yeah nistune shows it but the demo only runs for 2 minutes which makes it pretty useless, dont feel like buying a license just for that single use.

Oscilloscope isn't really an option being as all of mine are AC powered and cant easily log when Im driving.

Elite Racing I am in SA and I don't really have enough trust in any of the Tuners here to not look at knock and make sure they've done it properly.

Can you recommend anyone that you would let tune your car and then drive it without checking they have done it properly? I need to find a tuner that I can trust to do it properly.

nistune is in SA you could get Pete to do it?

sent an email off, hopefully they are willing to do it or know someone who will do a tune with the level of care and detail I want.

cheers for the info =)

I think it was guilttoy that said he was using a gizmo knock box to more accurately monitor knock. It apparently outputs a 0-5V signal based on knock level, which can be logged if interfaced to some sort of existing after market management. I never got around to looking into this myself... but one day.

yes a standalone knocklite or similar is best way to go. consult doesnt report it. unsure but i think nistune knock reading requires the daughterboard and custom nistune 'code' on that board to report it - i think so, cant remember 100%. so dont think just getting the software will help.

Managed to get hold of pete from nistune, going to have a session with him and get him to show me around nistune and tuning in general whilst getting him to check everything over, thanks for the suggestion status.

Might ask if he can explain how nistune reports knock and how their protocol extension for consult works, if it is like the rest of consult it shouldnt be too hard to write my own program to pull the data out, if the data is easily made visible via consult I will give it a shot and post it up here for people, will report back.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just did a road tune with Pete from the Nistune guys last night, very friendly knowledgeable guy, was great to chat to!

It was a hot night around 31c which was good as that is probably the hottest weather I am going to push the car hard in, with his big knock ears found it getting a bit out of control around peak torque (5500rpm) in 3rd gear runs so pulled around 2-3degrees around that part of the map, car pulls identically but he said there was nothing he could hear afterwards, should be even better in the colder weather. On boost was around 11:1 so now that I can be confident if it doesn't knock at full load on 18psi in 30c then it shouldn't knock ever so I'm going to head out to mallala soon.

Found out my O2 sensor is dead so it was idling around 17:1 and around 15:1 on cruise at times, but would fluctuate down to 11:1 due to lack of O2 feedback so hopefully that will fix my poppy idle (too lean) and bad fuel economy (too rich), will put it on the dyno to see if it throws out the map once it is functioning.

Overall it looks like shaun from boostworx did a pretty good job, was originally tuned in cold weather and Pete reckons the knock he heard would have been impossible to detect on the dyno, due to different temp and loads. Not sure if the O2 was functioning when it was originally tuned, would have hoped that shaun would have picked that up but it is entirely possible it has died since then.

Still have a weird issue where in semi cold weather (car been sitting for 8 hours, any less or more and it doesn't do it) and it sits on 5 degrees timing until it warms up, makes it quite difficult to drive, being as there is about 8 correction maps it could be jumping to we weren't able to pinpoint that problem but such is tuning!

Highly recommend people get a road tune done after they've got their base map under control especially with someone sitting next to you who knows their stuff, even if they find the map is perfect it just leaves you with so much more confidence that the car is running safely and properly.

Thanks Status for the suggestion!

edit: Pete mentioned that the way the ecu reports knock is complicated and hard to use so they haven't even got their software able to log it vs cells yet, might be something that they crack in the future though.

    • The issue now is the 'fuel cut' while driving, and when it happend, it does not stall. This, I did not test the fuel pressure while driving as I cannot with a fuel pressure gauge. I do have Nistune logs, yes. I have also replaced the MAF Sensor.   Also related to the FPG Fuel Hanger – I just realized that I need a Deutsch Crimp Tool to crimp some cables for the FPG Fuel Hanger. Need to purchase additional cables as the kit only included 2, which are for the float. FPG has not responded to my emails so far since purchasing. I thought about taking it to someone and having it done professionally, but I am reluctant since everyone I took it to messed up in some way.
    • There's a good German place in Brisbane if youre up for the drive 😛
    • The German place in Cabramatta was rock solid, fresh pretzel cooked to order back then. Then it went all quiet, after all the poker machines were removed, then I believe it closed for good. I did drive past the other week and noticed outdoor lighting a big screen, but no idea what is there now.
    • Yeah I suspect even if you hold airmass per cycle/cylinder constant if you get too far away from stock you're still going to have problems running the factory tune within the bounds of the factory load scale. Cams, different displacement/rod ratio, etc. I'm just lucky that the GTIII-SS with wastegate boost + CA compliance cats is pretty much equivalent to stock turbos. When I have actual space I can finally get it tuned and modify the fuel system for flex fuel to 100% handle any detonation concerns when cranking the boost to whatever those dinky turbos can put out.
    • I would say no, why, because my daughter, who also lives in Goulburn, hasn't recommended us going there Pity, as we miss all the German joints around in Sydney, actually, the restaurants are the only thing I really miss about Sydney, and a special mention to Ishibanboshi at Bondi Junction, their Kara-age Don is heart cloggingly deliciousness (always added a special boiled egg...or 2) 😋
