i think the difference is.. with coilovers, the shock is actually welded to the bottom of the spring, and they are basically one unit and cannot be separated. Most things can be adjustable.

With a spring and shock setup the springs and shocks can be separated and changed independently. In that setup you can adjust the shock, but not the actually spring height or anything like that.

Nah, people just use the term for the aftermarket adj one. My APEXi coilovers are identical to the standard ones except the spring seat is threaded and the adjustable shock rate knob at the bottom of the shock housing. Ohlins even use the same tapered spring like the stock springs.

jl: so you can actually remove the center to get it reconditioned with your springs?

I thought that was the reason why adjustable coilovers couldn't be reconditioned (one unit), whereas with a totally seperate coil and spring you can mix and match the spring and the actual shock absorber??

I had mine reconditioned before I put them in and had the original Apex spring changed to king springs of custom rate to improve ride. Since then I have also changed the springs at the front myself. People don't recon them because they haven't seen that brand before. The Ohlin, Tein and HKS ones I have seen were all the same. Otherwise it would make changing the spring rates difficult, which would take away from there "racing" purpose. It took me 1.5hr to change the front springs on the R with the APEXi coilovers, from wheel off to wheel on.

These guys are one of the few that will reco almost any coilover:- http://www.shockreco.com.au/

ahhh.. cool i didn't know you could do that.

yep.. if i ever work on the handling of the 31 i'm going to try swap things myself to save labour costs. Generally just need a spring compressor don't you but otherwise its just bolts in and out?

those guys sound like a good group to keep in mind.

i was always wondering whether i could get my Zeals reco'ed as they are $4k suspension (apparently) but nobody knew of anywhere in melbourne that would touch them. Basically a few people said "just throw them out and buy something local"

Yeah, spring compressors are cheap and a one off expense, I got mine from Repco for about $50, they were the cheapest, but for what I want they are fine, I think supa cheap has them for even less. Its kinda fun doing it youself, playing with the spring rates in the R has been fun, have learnt heaps about how spring rates effect the handling, I think I have it about just right for 95% road use, 5% track use. I really like a nice handling car, it gives you so much more confidence, and make you look like you are a better driver than you are :) .

They are just too expensive to replace, they can do all sorts of things. I have been talking to him about re-valving the APEXi ones as I think they could do with a little more rebound control, they only need the unit for a day to do that for me. As long as the shock housing hasn't been damaged its all good.

    • So, version 4 intake is on its way I was looking at these a while ago but at around $200 or more it was a little pricey for something that might not work, but, I had it in my watch list, but, I got a message saying it was on special, and I had a code thingie to use, it eventually came in at $120 delivered, so BAM, BUY NOW.....LOL I'll need to have a look when it arrives but I feel it will "look" better than what I currently have, as it comes with a PCV fitting, so I will be able to get rid of the alloy pipe that goes to the throttle body with the PCV fitting  Well, that's what the voices in my head are telling me  Oh, and this happened today Yeap, it was a Trojan, and it was cheap, so I headed back to the hardware store and actually spent a little bit more on a heavy duty,  one that was actually recommended by a plumber mate, a Cyclone one with a fibreglass handle that is actually rated for clay The broken shovel will eventually be "modified" into a short handle shovel
    • When you pulled it off, there is no signs of blown head gasket? Is it possible you have some other issues going on? Possible cracked blocked? Or do you think it's straight up lifting the head? Did you check what the head was torqued to before pulling it down (To see if possibly they're stretching, or starting to break threads out etc)?
    • Seems like a decent result for a modded JZX110. They are bulky in comparison to the 100 and 90 models (which I'd prefer myself) but they are getting very few and far between here in JP these days. Thanks for the detailed review and the import process into the UK. I also have a car which I'm hoping to export from Japan at some stage so it's good to know if someone from the UK was interested in it. By the way the corrosion underneath is par for the course for cars which were located in/near the mountains or along the Japan sea coastline. They get huge amounts of snow every winter and the sodium chloride is used on the roads. Many cars have some kind of rubber like treatment underneath but they tend to limit it to the wheel arches underbody and fuel tank. Suspension arms and sub-frames will have similar corrosion to your JZX110 which is a common sight. See it all the time and car dealers here generally don't even mention it unless asked.
    • If the sound goes away when you clutch in, the 1.5/2 way diffs are just shit, and you are a normal person. The diff is likely "fine" but driving at anything under 30kmh is a violent horrible experience. It would be exaggerated with solid diff bushings and subframe bushings if you have those.
