Which way would you go?

I had a plan to rebuild the RB20DET out of my R32 GTS4, using O/S pistons, and maybe even getting RB20E pistons (C/R = 9.5). Full balance on the crank / rods / pistons. Port and polish on the head. I'm guestimating $5000 all up.

Then thought about a RB25DET. Initial pricing is $3500 for a Stagea half-cut auto. I was also thinking about lightened flywheel and H/D clutch, so the fact it's an auto isn't a worry.

So, wich way would you go?

AWD RB25DET would be damn nice. If you can afford it, that'd be the option I'd take. I just feel the RB25DET has more potential.

Get the half cut, sell the box for $1000 or so, and hopefully the halfcut comes with a maybe a couple of panels, dash, etc that you can maybe get a few extra $ for.

Then put a bit of money into the RB25DET if you can. If you put the extra you saved on the rebuild into achieving a safe 240rwkw with a new turbo, AFM, ECU, etc and enjoy the extra torque you get and just keep the RB25DET with stock internals. If you can find a new stagea and therefore NEO version even better!

Hopefully the stagea you got it from is a bit of a family car and the engine hasn't had a life that has been too traumatic.

I'm with the bigger 25DET. Cheaper and should out perform with a few sensible mods.

but then again if i had that amoung of money i would be looking for a rb26

Try and get a GTR head, strap that to a VL 3litre block and find a VLturbo or RB25 gearbox!
