Hey kids, I need some help connecting my laptop to my EMS stinger ECU.

The EMS uses a serial (DB9) port to connect to a laptop, and my new laptop only has USB ports.

I've purchased an adapter, but I've been told that it's the problem.

Does anyone know of a different method to connect to the laptop or another USB -> serial adapter that works?

Thanks.

The expensive Belkin adaptors work very well. The cheaper USB->DB9 adaptors use a cheap RS232 chip that causes these sorts of problems.

yeah i thought so too... i bought a $99 one and it doesnt work :(

Best ones are the datalogit(smoked black) one or the wolf one (white blue leds on sides).... different ecus like different adapters... its a real pain.

Its one of the reasons i use a toughbook as the serial is rock solid and i no longer have to use usb-->serial converters....

Yeah I've found one made by IOgear in the states that's $55 from an Australian website.

Does anyone know how to set it up on the laptop?

i.e. selecting which com port to use on the software and which USB port related to which com port.

Trent, do you have any experience with the EMS stinger software?

when the usb dongle is working it will just appear as a COM port in windows

ie you dont map a serial com port to a USB com port

your laptop should have zero com ports, then when you install the USB dongle, a new COM port should appear

you choose this in datalogit or the software etc

as a last resort either a toughbook with true serial ports or go for dell 2nd hand ebay junker laptops

usually have working serial ports and cheap as chips

yeah we do quite a few make sure its not an early version 3 that cant rescale the load points.... real evil little fckrs. The motorsport stuff is real nice to work with.

i have a couple of different adaptors here including the datalogit one if you wanna try them before buying one.

That's a real good idea mate thanks, I might have to take you up on that offer... I'll PM you later

    • Update: O2 sensor in my downpipe turned out to be faulty when I plugged in to the Haltech software. Was getting a "open circuit" warning. Tons of carbon buildup on it, probably from when I was running rich for a while before getting it corrected. Replaced with new unit and test drove again. The shuffle still happens, albeit far less now. I am not able to replicate it as reliably and it no longer happens at the same RPM levels as before. The only time I was able to hear it was in 5th going uphill and another time in 5th where there was no noticeable incline but applying more throttle first sped it up and then cleared it. Then once in 4th when I slightly lifted the throttle going over a bump but cleared right after. My understanding is that with the O2 sensor out, the ECU relies entirely on the MAP tune and isn't able to make its small adjustments based on the sensors reading. All in all, a big improvement, though not the silver bullet. Will try validating the actuators are set up correctly, and potentially setting up shop time to tune the boost controller on closed loop rather than the open loop it is set to now. Think if it's set up on closed loop to take the O2 reading, that should deal with these last bits. Will try to update again as I go.
    • More so GReddy oil relocation kits, sandwich plates, etc. all use 10AN fittings. And same, I've only used 10AN and my car sees track work (circuit, doing laps, not 10 sec squirt business).
    • street use or race track, what hose size and why? what factors change with the hose size options ?   see most comon is an10. when you see most oem external coolers are closer to an12? does high volume oil pump like nitto need an12 or 10 be just fine
