Hi

I have installed a used Mines front pipe that i got a really good deal on.

I was mainly looking for a little exhaust note tuning for that Mines sound.

I was surprised what a difference the equal length front pipe made to the exhaust note :-)

It is an older version with 60mm at the turbo's into 70mm.

As this is the same sizes as the OEM front pipe I don't expect much performance gain.

However boost response feels improved.

Is it possible or is it just the smoother sound tricking me?

Will admit I was enjoying the sound to much to take note of actual RPM vs boost

There is no flex joint in the pipe, are there any issues with not having one?

Lastly if the pipe diameter is the same would I need a dyno run to be sure AFR is still ok?

In fact can anyone point me at some good resource for understanding what sort of changes require a re-tune?

Thanks

Stretch

Unless you have an aftermarket ecu you can't "re-tune" it anyway. For an expert look at your car take it round to Geoff at Shred Motorsport:

Shred Industries Performance, 67 Pharazyn St Lower Hutt 5010, Melling, Lower Hutt City

they have plenty of Skyline experience.

Thanks for the reply, I do have an F-Con so a re-tune is possible.

I am just not sure what sort of physical changes it can cope with on its own?

Andre at Speedtech looks after my baby but I must pop in to Shred some time

no flex is always a problem as its not absorbing movement of the motor and exhaust. this can lead to cracked manifolds over time due to weight/heat.

as for tuning, as above, no point even if you had a ECU to be honest. not enough of a change to warrant the expense really.

Quick update after a visit to my tuner.

First the boost response was not improved as the dyno plot shows the boost peaking at the same RPM....amazing what sound and your mind can make you think.

I guess this was to be expected considering the pipes were the same diameter.

The AFR had leaned out in the top part of the rev range.

Front pipes and cat back exhausts combined to make the AFR a full point leaner and he could hear some detonation.

So I think the $$ to getting the tune checked was well spent

On the plus side after a tweak to the tune there was in increase of 21 KW which I was not expecting at all add that to how she sounds now and I am very happy!

Thanks for the input from those that replied.

Did it improve the response as well? Post up the dynos if you have them :)

    • This car has run before on this z32 ecu can get the part number for you, I have tried with no AFM it didn’t change anything, I compression tested today 140-150 across all 6 cylinders, also set fuel pressure to 43psi. The only weird thing was cylinder 1 plug was black and fouled other 5 cylinders were just wet with fuel. Spun cas by hand and confirmed injectors are clicking

    • A 1.5 way is a 2 way. It is just a 2 way with a less aggressive ramp on overrun.
    • The ABS and/or TCS being missing/broken will not cause the engine to misbehave. It just casues CEL to come on and annoy you. The CEL is useless if it is always on, so you have to do the things you have to do to get rid of it, so it can be useful. Being a Stag ECU, then yes, it will not expect TCS to be present. But it will expect ABS to be present and working. You will need to either make the ABS CU talk to the ECU (don't ask me what that will take on an NA R34), and make sure the hardware is working....or, you just need to blank it out in Nistune. Do not persist with the stock ECU. You will just have problems. Gte it Nistuned. Start from there. DO YOU HAVE A BOOST SENSOR? The ECU's boost sensor that it. It is connected to the loom at the rear of the coil cover. Usually rides on the firewall on an R34, but is usually bolted down to a bracket along with all the other crap at the back of the coil cover when a Neo is dropped into another car. If you do not have it, the ECU will shit the bed. So, do you have one?
    • So sadly the fuel pump etc was not it. The pump and filter is new and it is still cutting around 4000 rpm. A read something about ABS/TCS (engine is from stagea and ECU too so no TCS) and i dont know for 100% that my car has ABS. It has ABS "cube" in engine bay but i dont think it works(or at least from my braking experience). Can be something like that?  I will be driving the car next week to Nistune tuner to properly see what is wrong...
