Hi all,

I did the AAC and Air Reg clean recently and now my car idles higher then before i cleaned them!

It's currently idling at 1100 and sometimes goes up a couple of hundred.

Not sure what the problem could be.

Tried turning the AAC screw but wouldn't bring the revs down and if i turned it down to much the car stalls when engine is cold but when warm it stays alive but idles 1100+

Anyone know if the Air Reg is meant to have a tiny gap/hole when normal? I recall when i assembled it together after cleaning it i looked through the hole/pipe and i noticed it's not fully blocked off and there was a little gap/hole.

If that should be fully closed then that might be why i got high idle?!

Any other suggestions would be great!

Thanks.

You need to disconnect one of the plugs on the AAC valve I'm pretty sure to adjust it

Or maybe one of the TPS plugs?

Sorry don't remember which one. But once you do this your revs will drop so if you've wound it in it might stall.

i had a funny feeling it was the aac plug because if its still plugged in the computer can open or close the AAC valve? But hey it probably is the TPS. It should work if you can get it into base idle mode anyway.... dunno why it wasnt changing the idle

Screw in for revs down and screw out for revs up I think?

Been far to long since ive had to do this lol

Perhaps try resetting the stock ECU if its still the standard one

the idle adjust screw has a small rubber o-ring around the inside. maybe when you put it back together you left the o-ring out? it shouldnt even be removable really, from memory it has a strip in the centre that is threaded thru the middle of the idle screw. but mine had come off when i pulled it apart.

Unplug the AAC when adjusting the AAC idle screw. The air regulator should be fully open when cold and will close as the engine warms up. It should be fully closed when the surrounding temp reaches approx 60degs.

according to the r33 workshop manual you only unplug the AAC valve on a GTR. on rb20 and rb25 powered cars you unplug the TPS.

If it is an R32 with RB20DET the AAC connector should be disconnected which is the same for the R32 RB26DETT. If it is an R33 or R34 RB25 it is the TPS. I double checked with the R32, R33 and R34 workshop manuals.

Cheers

    • Have a vb in honour of the car comming back
    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.
