hey fellas

have an oldschool fat PS3

put disc in.

disc spins

disc won't read

wont attemp to read it

wont even allude to there being a disc in there.. but the disc is spinning becuase label comes out at different direction to how it went in..

NOW - i have read that the disc readers are prone to fault, easy way to spot fault is if disc doesn't spin at all.. because the disc won't SPIN, unless the laser recognises there's a disc - apparently

so according to what the internet has told me - it's recognising there is a disc in there. but it's still being a cunt tooth.

any ideas??

and yes - i know a car forum is not the place to ask this sort of technical support related question, but right now i cannot afford to pay a legit nerd to diagnose a fix :(

Car forum's "World and Other Things" section is the perfect place to ask about these things.

All I can think to try, is:

- turn off at the back

- hold eject button and turn on from the back

---The fan will spin crazy and get rid of heaps of the dust inside

- Let the PS3 operate until the light in front starts flashing red

- turn off from the back

- then turn on again, this time whilst NOT holding the eject button.

- Try play a game,

If that doesn't work, try a full reset,

- turn off from back

- hold front Power-on button and turn on from back

--- this will cause all your settings to reset. Games and data won't be deleted or affected, but themes and video/audio settings will have reset.

If that fails, get it checked out. I don't understand why it wouldn't be reading.

Let me know how it goes.

you're a f**king bloody legend. i wonder if anybody would notice me leaving work early...

...i could probably wing it by leaving a few pieces of clothing draped over my chair and draw a smily face on a basketball.

You're the 2nd person on these forums to call me that :)

I snuck out of work early. Secret is to leave your desk a bit messy so as make it seem as if you're still there.

dunno bout the PS3 but the PS2 would spin like crazy even if the laser was lazy and not reading. sounds just like that issue to me.

but yeah...if what ELeEye suggested doesnt work....time to get it looked at. or just buy another. little more money, alot less hastle

My old PS2 did this. Ended up being a f**ked laser and the cost of repair was worth more than the console was at the time. So I just bought another one.

PS3 still going strong since first day of release :)

my old brick ps3 had same problem, took the thing apart, cleaned it and put it in the oven while i was at it, while it was in the oven, i took the disk drive apart and cleaned the lens with a cotton tip, all done, new thermal paste, cleaned disk drive, and now disks play again and it has never had a YLOD again :D

but really, i did put my ps3 in the oven and the disk not reading is a common problem, like said, take disk drive out and clean the laser with a cotton bud, even move it a little bit because sometimes the little motor seizes up and thats why the laser wont read, cause it wont move.

Well, after 42 months of heavy use, my ps3 finally copped the YLOD.

The fat thing worked endlessly and put up a decent fight.

Time to jump on YouTube for a bit of a DIY fixeruppa...

Any experience with fixing this thing; other than putting it in an oven?? Unless the oven method actually fixes it :whistling:

Hey mate I had the YLOD a couple of months back now and here's some info I learned along the way,

1. Sony will want to charge you $250 to repair (that includes postage and re-sending it back out to you etc.). They will only offer a 3 month repair warranty on it as well so with that being said and the prices of PS3's only being $299 now and coming with a 1 year factory warranty do the math :P.

2. Now I can't comment on the effectiveness of pulling it apart and re-applying the thermal paste but I have READ that people who have done this only manage to get a few months out of it until it get's the YLOD again, IMO it's not worth it but each to their own.

3. I don't know if you have seen it on YouTube or not but you can temporarily bring your PS3 back to life using a hairdryer without even pulling the PS3 apart. I used this method and it gave me just enough time to re-sync my trophies and do a backup of the settings/data etc.

In the end I went out and bought a new PS3, it's not worth the hassle and at least I have peace of mind now. When I went to put my backed up data on my new ps3 none of the data would transfer, not because it was getting errors, it just didn't transfer any data...NFI what was going on there so I just manually added my saved game data from my external HDD and all was good. This is the shitty part about the saved data though, some of the games will be "protected" which means you cant copy them over to a new ps3, these will be the majority of your online games like COD, Crysis etc...The only way to get them over to your ps3 is to upload them to PS3 (have to be a platstation plus member) and then re-download them onto your new/fixed PS3.

Thanks guys, I'm gonna give the hairdryer trick a go and hopefully be able to back up my data and trophies.

A mate from Uni repairs consoles so hopefully he can check it out... Problem is, he's overseas until the end of the month!!!

Worst comes to worst, it'll be a purchase of a new pansy slim ps3.

Eps, did you ever work out a solution for your console?

  • 4 weeks later...

So, got the PS3 fixed by a repairman via a reflow method @ $85. Worked for a week and died again just last night.

It couldn't have died at a worse time. I FINALLY bought a copy of GT5. Put the copy in and downloaded all the updates. After it started up, I thought I'd watch the intro clip cause it's "what I do". "My Garage" started loading and just as I saw a glimpse of some guy walking, YLOD #2.

This time, I've decided to go through Sony. It'll cost me $175. They'll be providing me a refurb 120GB PS3 Slim because they no longer repair the old PHAT ones. I guess I can't complain too much since they're basically upgrading my console.

Shame though, I really liked the phat ones as well. All my playstations have been the fat and bulky types. It's an emotional day for me... We've been through a lot.

  • 2 weeks later...

So got a refurbished ps3 slim from Sony today. Went to install by backed up data but after a couple of minutes, it would say that my data was corrupt.

Tried this a few times and every result, "corrupt".

Turns out, ps3 doesnt like USB 3.0. So how did I fix it?? I simply used a USB 2.0 cable and all worked fine.

Does anyone know why this is? I mean, it's the same hard drive, how does a different cable have this issue? Would it be too much data going through? High voltage demand?

    • Yeah I understand you have to pay for an updated map or subscription service or something. But I can't even find a current map for Australia. My map is dated 2017, but didn't this car version still sell in Australia until 2021?   Also, just as an aside, the navigation system warns you of traffic incidences ahead.....why would they include that on a map they knew is not receiving live information. I am forever going to be warned of an incident that probably existed for 30 minutes 8 years ago.

    • sensible choice....and all 32s should be in yellow
    • Run it in open loop for now, and drop the frequency down. This lowers the resolution and requires more duty cycle to do anything, however good to troubleshoot.
    • According to Josh, one of our local Americans, it seems the USA still can't get turbo systems quite right at a lot of places, so possible that they're not running great at all, but they've just not complained as NFI about getting it right...
