That's a great idea dohmar. Our cars are very similar performance wise so I would definitely benefit from your developments. I see your car regularly as I work around the corner from boostworx so if you see a white crane on that street flag me down and we'll have a chat. I'll probably be more noticeable in the 32 though haha

oh you're part of the work thats being done on tha vacant patch of land behind thomas st? whats going on there anyhow?

I work for a company in technology park so I'm not far at all - my primary mechanic is road n track in thomas st, tho i use boostworx for troubleshooting and tuning of the gtr

-D

Naah I work at cross cranes on Thomas St. That vacant block is directly behind us. Housing I think. I would invite you to swing past sometime but the yard is secured by barbed wire and remote gates haha.

cross cranes? never seen em on thomas st? i know of cross keys paint n panel and road n track on thomas, and boostworx being the next st over...

Edit - looked on google maps, no wonder u see my car, its 3 doors down from ur work most of the time ;P

Yeah that's us. Stopped and had a good look at your car the other day. You need to fix your right skirt man! Other than that I like what I see ;)

the skirts and front bar are getting removed for painting, ive already got the clips from nissan to keep them attached properly

needs touch ups and a few mechanical things done but its getting there

legality is put before performance in my case (sadly)

the 2860 series are certified as after factory replacements and can get thru regency with ease

thats the other bonus - what makes those other turbos more special than the 2860s or the hks equivalents?

And that is the dilemma. I've seen 2860-5 kits for $2k atm including the 14psi actuator, which means I can sell my N1's and actuator for around $1500 (which is what I paid and considering the car has been offroad for 6 months since I fit those n1's, they're barely run in.) The exhaust housings and sleeve bearings of n1's arent tops for performance, but they are legal. Just need to find someone who'd be happy with the close-to-300kw setup (i reckon they could get to 290kw with proper split dumps and front pipes), As it is, theyre doing 275 on a 21 yr old engine. 2860 -5 should be fine, unless the -7's are responsive enough. I just dont know.

-D

are u serious? tt application? I thought -5's were less laggy than the -7s ?

Maybe I should stick with the n1's.. they are so goddam awesome to plant the throttle and just hold on for dear life

-D

Ben, not sure where you're getting your info from bud.

Firstly, who told you that -5's are legal?

Just because they say Garrett, means nothing. You'll obviously need to run a PFC or similar to facilitate a tune which is an arse rape from Regency right there.

Secondly, -7's are more responsive than -5's due to -7's small Comp and smaller Inducer on the Turbine.........not 100% sure, but I think the -7's & N1 are similar in size so if you want something with a little more grunt (and slightly laggier) then go the -5's

Ben, not sure where you're getting your info from bud.

Firstly, who told you that -5's are legal?

Not just any garrets Pete.

Any 2860 series turbo, regardless of trim is legal according to the certification given out by MTQ and other turbo suppliers.

You're ignoring the nisstune I already have which tbh might be technically illegal, but if regency can find and call it, I would be very surprised.

Tbh the 2860 series nomenclature of their '-5 -7 -10' shits me off because its totally random. I havent done any research because I know u lads will set me upon the right path when the time comes. And that time won't come for at least 18 months. I have many other mods I need to do.

I just want a legal set of turbos that give me max power at minimal turbo lag and maximum response. Not aiming for figures at all, however the more the merrier as the saying goes...

The n1's are frigging great - but the exhaust turbine size holds them back, as does the sleeve bearing. Lets see what a set of street legal 2860's can do, regardless of trim!

Based on your sentiments towards the N1's, you won't be happy with the -7's........so as stated above, -5's are your next step.........-10's would be way too big for what you want.

-7's = similar to HKS GTSS

-10 = similar to HKS GTRS

-5 = somewhere in between the 2 even though the numbers are not uniform (blame Garrett)

Nisstune is not maybe a defect........it's def a defect if they come across it.

-5's are physically bigger than stock (not by much) so it depends how astute the Regency bloke is

Well, theres a certificate to make regency accept >any< 2860 series. Thats a fact.

Nisstune - well, they'd have to A) be suspicious of the ecu and B) find the modification which would involve disassembly of the ECU. Oh, and I also have an unmolested ECU just in case ;D

-5s are the shiznit it seems

however - i thought the 7s were a bigger turbo - more power, more lag? writeoff has the SS kit and hes doing 340kw or so but thats HKS and not garret

that said, in ur opinion, is HKS vs garrett a big deal?

-D

I did 348.5rwkW at Willall on their old Dyno Dynamics 2WD dyno & 335rwkW (after a tune) at Southern HiTech Dyno Dynamics 2WD dyno.

These charts may help:

the 33n1s in the first graph are what I have - steel turbine in the stock 33 gtr housing. aka N1's (compared to spec and what not).

No mention of difference in 2860 trims, esp in a parallel TT configuration - cant draw any conclusions

-D

Answer to 1st question

2860 being accepted or not is irrelevant as they would probably not pass EPO tests and furthermore, they are useless if you can't tune without a replacement ECU or piggyback, etc......which is def illegal.

Dale would be a better authority on this but I'm pretty sure they regularly remove passenger's side kick panels if they have any suspicion of tampering.

2nd question:

-7's def smaller than -5 as above comparison to HKS..............Garrett generally cheaper than HKS equivalent hence their popularity

If writeoff has 340 atw with SS turbos, I wanna see dyno graphs and what supporting mods he's got cause most guys on here only manage that with -5's

Thanks for that Dave

Ben, go to Garrett site and you'll find the info I've given you re order of size is correct

Dave's graph shows the -5 with a .6 Comp cover as opposed to your .42.........just one of the differences.......not to mention smaller Comp trim and smaller Inducer

That sounds very close to calling me a liar Pete! :nyaanyaa:

All the info you want is in the Forced Induction stickied RB26 thread, a few pages in, CBF searching for it but it's there.

a) 2860's can be ran at stock gtr boost without controller and have same epa results due to the similar trim and AR ratio - camgears are more of a concern

b) you only need a tuned ecu when passing above stock boost so if u swap the ecu and remove the ebc then it all works as stock.

c) you've missed my point. have you ever seen a nisstune? my guess is no, because its a tiny little chip which fits inside the stock ecu. you could remove the kick panel and see a nissan ecu housing. But hey, PFC owners have been housing PFC's inside nissan housings for the last decade, so who am i to judge..

d) hks buy garrett turbos and do their own aftermarket bolloks (allegedly) which supposedly gives u +20 kw and + 20% the cost

e) Writeoff has an exhaust system that would make u cream ur gstring. Its unreal. He has the graphs, pm him direct for them.

-D

Not a liar bud, just like to see your specs which is what I asked for.............cbf looking either as I'm not that interested at this hour.

Reports almost done and heading off to bed.

I'll get him to send you pics of his dump pipes.

3 inches wide in what I believe they call 'lobster tail style' with full depth welds tucked close to the body pan

oh yeah, you best believe it. its the shiznit.

Ben, who is feeding you this rubbish............try running -5's (with or without stock boost) and see how they run without a tune....they def have different trim and comp size hence your AFR's will be all over the shop

You're requirement for a tune is based on AFR"S (in this case) not just boost.........I'm not even referring to boost

Cam gear adjusting will affect your valve timing.............a good tune will give you a nice balance between correct AFR's and ignition timing

    • I agree with everything else, except (and I'm rethinking this as it wasn't setup how my brain first though) if the sensor is at the end of a hose which is how it has been recommended to isolate it from vibrations, then if that line had a small hole in, I could foresee potentially (not a fluid dynamic specialist) the ability for it to see a lower pressure at the sensor. But thinking through, said sensor was in the actual block, HOWEVER it was also the sensor itself that broke, so oil pressure may not have been fully reaching the sensor still. So I'm still in my same theory.   However, I 100% would be saying COOL THE OIL DOWN if it's at 125c. That would be an epic concern of mine.   Im now thinking as you did Brad that the knock detection is likely due to the bearings giving a bit more noise as pressure dropped away. Kinkstah, drop your oil, and get a sample of it (as you're draining it) and send it off for analysis.
    • I myself AM TOTALLY UNPREPARED TO BELIEVE that the load is higher on the track than on the dyno. If it is not happening on the dyno, I cannot see it happening on the track. The difference you are seeing is because it is hot on the track, and I am pretty sure your tuner is not belting the crap out of it on teh dyno when it starts to get hot. The only way that being hot on the track can lead to real ping, that I can think of, is if you are getting more oil (from mist in the inlet tract, or going up past the oil control rings) reducing the effective octane rating of the fuel and causing ping that way. Yeah, nah. Look at this graph which I will helpfully show you zoomed back in. As an engineer, I look at the difference in viscocity at (in your case, 125°C) and say "they're all the same number". Even though those lines are not completely collapsed down onto each other, the oil grades you are talking about (40, 50 and 60) are teh top three lines (150, 220 and 320) and as far as I am concerned, there is not enough difference between them at that temperature to be meaningful. The viscosity of 60 at 125°C is teh same as 40 at 100°C. You should not operate it under high load at high temperature. That is purely because the only way they can achieve their emissions numbers is with thin-arse oil in it, so they have to tell you to put thin oil in it for the street. They know that no-one can drive the car & engine hard enough on the street to reach the operating regime that demands the actual correct oil that the engine needs on the track. And so they tell you to put that oil in for the track. Find a way to get more air into it, or, more likely, out of it. Or add a water spray for when it's hot. Or something.   As to the leak --- a small leak that cannot cause near catastrophic volume loss in a few seconds cannot cause a low pressure condition in the engine. If the leak is large enough to drop oil pressure, then you will only get one or two shots at it before the sump is drained.
    • So..... it's going to be a heater hose or other coolant hose at the rear of the head/plenum. Or it's going to be one of the welch plugs on the back of the motor, which is a motor out thing to fix.
    • The oil pressure sensor for logging, does it happen to be the one that was slowly breaking out of the oil block? If it is,I would be ignoring your logs. You had a leak at the sensor which would mean it can't read accurately. It's a small hole at the sensor, and you had a small hole just before it, meaning you could have lost significant pressure reading.   As for brakes, if it's just fluid getting old, you won't necessarily end up with air sitting in the line. Bleed a shit tonne of fluid through so you effectively replace it and go again. Oh and, pay close attention to the pressure gauge while on track!
    • I don't know it is due to that. It could just be due to load on track being more than a dyno. But it would be nice to rule it out. We're talking a fraction of a second of pulling ~1 degree of timing. So it's not a lot, but I'd rather it be 0... Thicker oil isn't really a "bandaid" if it's oil that is going to run at 125C, is it? It will be thicker at 100 and thus at 125, where the 40 weight may not be as thick as one may like for that use. I already have a big pump that has been ported. They (They in this instance being the guy that built my heads) port them so they flow more at lower RPM but have a bypass spring that I believe is ~70psi. I have seen 70psi of oil pressure up top in the past, before I knew I had this leak. I have a 25 row oil cooler that takes up all the space in the driver side guard. It is interesting that GM themselves recommend 0-30 oil for their Vette applications. Unless you take it to the track where the official word is to put 20-50w oil in there, then take that back out after your track day is done and return to 0-30.
