Hey guys. Just picked my skyline up today, getting to know all the new buttons and whatnot. I noticed a little electrical screen with some functions to the left of the steering wheel. Is this a turbo timer or something? I have no idea what it is or how to use it. I tried looking in the owners manual and couldn't find anything. I will upload a picture of it tomorrow. I have a 1999 r34 gt-t. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

take a pic of it (as you said you are going to) and post it up so we can see what model it is and someone on here might have the same one and give you an idea of how to work it.

general run down on how they work though, they allow the engine to keep running for a certain amount of time after you turn the key off (meaning you have to leave the car in neutral with the handbrake on in the case of a manual). this allows the engine to keep circulating the oil and coolant to cool the turbo down. this is mainly for if you have been giving it the beans just before pulling up, however the better option is to not fang it right before you are going to stop and just take it easy for the last km or so before you get to your destination (if you have fanged it at all).

It is a turbo timer, when I put it on, my car idled for about 2 minutes before turning off. Question now is, how do I use it. I have messed around with it a bit, and have NO IDEA how to use it.

Extremely stupid and hard to use (which is weird for anything Japanese?) but I managed to find a manual and automatic control. I just leave it in automatic and it averages about 1 minute after nannying it, and up to 3 1/2 minutes after heavyish driving, which seems to be ok.

In manual, you have to hold the "set" button and hit the "m.s.d" button to up the seconds or the "m.h" for minutes (up to 9:55). When I hit the "test" button, the timer turns off, then on again in about 2 seconds (useless?). I am guessing both the "standby" buttons are preset idle times, but I can't be bothered working it out.

In conclusioin? It works fine if I put it on auto, and I don't have to worry about it. :)

No, they were designed for exterme heavy driving right up until you pull into the driveway. If you are grannying it (nothing over 3k revs) then there is no need to have a turbo timer as the turbo would already be cool. As someone meantioned, if you drive like a woman for 2-3 minutes before your destination, there wouldn't be any need to put your turbo timer on.

exactly. and this is actually the best way to do it (granny it for the last few mins before you arrive at your destination) as this will let your brakes get decent airflow to cool down, as well as better airflow through the radiator.

    • Hi everyone, I’m having an issue with my R32 GT-R. Sometimes, when the car goes over a bump or experiences some vibration, the 4WD warning light comes on the dashboard. When I check the code from the control unit in the trunk, it shows Code 19 – ETS Motor. However, everything seems to be working fine — if I turn off the engine and restart the car, the light goes away and everything functions normally. Has anyone experienced this before? Where should I start troubleshooting this issue? Thanks in advance!
    • I'm back from the dyno - again! I went looking for someone who knew LS's and had a roller dyno, to see how it shaped up compared to everything else and confirm the powerband really is peaking where Mr Mamo says it should. TLDR: The dyno result I got this time definitely had the shape of how it feels on the road and finally 'makes sense'. Also we had a bit more time to play with timing on the dyno, it turns out the common practice in LS is to lower the timing around peak torque and restore it to max after. So given a car was on the dyno and mostly dialled in already, it was time for tweaking. Luis at APS is definitely knowledgable when it came to this and had overlays ready to go and was happy to share. If you map out your cylinder airmass you start seeing graphs that look a LOT like the engine's torque curve. The good thing also is if you map out your timing curve when you're avoiding knock... this curve very much looks like the inverse of the airmass curve. The result? Well it's another 10.7kw/14hp kw from where I drove it in at. Pretty much everywhere, too. As to how much this car actually makes in Hub Dyno numbers, American Dyno numbers, or Mainline dyno numbers, I say I don't know and it's gone up ~25kw since I started tinkering lol. It IS interesting how the shorter ratio gears I have aren't scaled right on this dyno - 6840RPM is 199KMH, not 175KMH. I have also seen other printouts here with cars with less mods at much higher "kmh" for their RPM due Commodores having 3.45's or longer (!) rear diff ratios maxing out 4th gear which is the 1:1 gear on the T56. Does this matter? No, not really. The real answer is go to the strip and see what it traps, but: I guess I should have gone last Sunday...
