It always surprises me when people spend good money on an engine, only to install a very cheap critical item that can completely destroy it.

Would you buy the best bungee harness, best bungee rope, and then buy the cheapest chinese fittings to connect the rope to your harness that you could find on ebay, then go bungee jumping, with lots of faith?

I certainly wouldn't.

Then they blame SAU for tasteless comments and say its a bad place to be.

Really....your gonna compare bungee jumping to a wastegate. One can kill you and the other can easily be replaced or rebuilt if faulty.....lol There is nothing wrong with the gate! The gate works! alot of you didnt even read the post.....I asked about preload adjustment not stating that the gate was staying stuck or not building boost. It gets really old when you ask a question on any forum and when someone see's the word ebay there ready to say the same thing "ohh its not working b/c you bought it from ebay," or "you get what you paid for," take the time and answer the question that someone is asking before jumping to conclusions. Thats what make the forums tasteless.....If you dont have anything worth saying just move on to the next post. Not every part other than expensive name brand parts are junk. Alot of the parts that we put on our cars are not that hard to make. Some things are important like internals and so forth but a 100 dollar wastegate is not gonna blow my engine up.

And all im trying to say is that not every part sold on ebay is junk. Ive already torn the gate apart and looked over everything. The diapram is thick and durable and the material used to put the gate together is well constructed. I mean really guys....how hard is it to make a gate. You think people manufature stuff and sell it on ebay b/c its gonna blow everyones engine up......Im certain that if my gate wanted to build 40psi I would definetly feel it before it happens. The diapram would almost have to be gone in order for this to happen.

Won't take long for a turbo to go from 20psi to 40psi at 7,000rpm if the wastegate sticks.. And I doubt before you could react..

I was comparing it to another obvious situation... You know, dumbing it down..

Yes the gate may work, you seem to think its of high quality metals - But do you think these chinese backyard jobs are tested thoroughly, hot\cold 200+ times, abused, etc like a real wastegate manufacturer does? I highly doubt it. What if it looks ok to you, but that metal isn't cured properly, or forged correctly so that it slowly weakens over a few months, or warps and then siezes?

Your engine goes bang, $10k down the drain, because you spent $10,100 instead of $10,500...

Bit more of a perspective for you.

Call the forum tasteless if you wish - SAU is the only place you're going to get all of this great knowledge - and from a bunch of guys who are just straight forward honest.

And yes, I think they are all making the same point - Buy a cheap critical component that can kill you motor in a failure, and you're playing with fire.

My comparison to bungee jumping is EXACTLY right on track with comparison. If you don't understand that, then I can see now why you went shopping on ebay for a wastegate.

You think people manufature stuff and sell it on ebay b/c its gonna blow everyones engine up......

The make things cheaply, to maximise profits. Business 101.

They are not Australian a lot of the time, and therefore do not have to even deal with the consumer laws here.

Whether it does/does not kill your motor due to failure - they don't care, all they care about is that you sent them money.

welcome to sau.....

are you running a boost controller? if so what sort?

if you can get hold of a bike pump or even a compressor at really low pressure try feeding some pressure into the gate and see what it does, preferably with a gauge in the line to see what boost it opens at etc.

ever thought of supporting the companies that do the R&D so that they stay in business and will continue to do R&D and give us more products in the future, as opposed to some guy in china that is killing the industry?

it's not only about what things cost...

we hate on people for MANY reasons here on SAU

Yeah I did that last night to see when the gate started to open and when the gate was fully open. It opened at like 2 psi and was fully opened at 8 or so. The gentleman I purchased the gate from told me that he switched from a 14lb spring to a 8.

I support some of the companies that do R&D. I mean really..... I support ACT,arp, wiseco, eagle, cosworth, nissan, ksport, russels, fuel lab, walbro and the list goes on. Well why am I getting hated on? Hate has no positive outcome so why? Trying to get me to sell this gate and spend 550 bucks on a brand name gate doesnt answer my original question. The point is if people are gonna make stupid comments just leave it to yourself. A forum should be a place where a nissan,sr20,rb26...whatever enthusist should be able to come on here or any forum, ask a question and receive a answer that helps. all the comments that have been made is stuff that I read all the time. It gets old and thats what make forums tasteless. I didnt say that SAU is tasteless. Its the people that run there mouths, thinking there funny and trying to be kool. "I know what your problem is and I dont even need pictures," type of comments......really mature.

Serious question- do the reputable companies offer warranty to engines etc if their product fails?

I highly doubt it. Just like most people in buisness, when there part fails(which can happen to name brand parts for those that bash the chinese) they always blame it on improper instalation. Every body is out to get our money, it just depends on who you give it to. Its all wasted money at the end of the day when you think about it. over half of us modify our cars b/c we want to and never get what we put into our vehicles. If I can save 400 dollars on something that works just as good then im gonna do it..... It goes back to what I stated earlier....Its just a wastegate. Its not a airplane, its not a space ship its just a wastegate. Just b/c one person makes something doesnt mean that the idea cant be repeated by a company that finds cheaper labor, cheaper over head, material for the same price, equipment for a cheaper price. Its not a secret how a gat works. If someone finds a way to produce it at a cheaper price and it performs like it should then whats the biggie?

Cannabiscorpse: first 2 sentences are yours. no hate from my end....

ppl are free to correct me, but when I bought my Garrett new, the condition was it has to be installed by one of Garrett's approved workshops and inspected and all this other crap... otherwise is blamed on installation.... so yeh you can get something from it, but half the people here are happy to do it themselves because it will save us money and we know that it will work and we wont have these weird after install woes.

Put it on. And hope for the best.

Its the luck of the draw.

Ive ran a cheap ebay manifold and wastegate on one of my old cars when i was an apprentice. Its still going strong at 400 kw.

My mate had one on for a week and a dag went through his turbo. Even though he cleaned the manifold up he couldnt see the dag.

Let us know how it goes.

Get a boost gauge that has a warning function and try to use an eci with boost cut function

You need the gate spring to be as close to your target boost as possible to eliminate gate creeping.

Hangon.. you reckon the gate is fine now?

You posted up that you were having a problem with the gate.. it sounded funny when on boost, like the gate was moving up and down rapidly?

But now it's fine? ok.. but you're still arguing?

Have you solved your problem or not?

most likely spring is too weak for your application. hence you are getting a form of 'valve bounce' in your wastegate as the diaphragm and spring struggle to control the valve at higher pressure. fit a stronger spring and it should help. it really should't be starting to open at 2psi. does it have another port on the gate housing so you can add pressure to help keep it shut(basically equalises pressure on both sides of the diaphragm so it won't move till the boost controller starts bleeding air).

There is a rubber diaphragm inside external gate, its going to make a noise when the diaphragm leaks as air travel through the leak. I would pull it apart and check it. Branded EG’s diaphragm is made out of better materials compare to those cheap ebay once. Which technically lasts lot longer.

    • Ha, well, it's been.... a bit of a journey. Things have taken much longer than I'd hoped. I'll probably put up a thread at some stage. Hopefully soon. The car's not done any kms since my update in June though, put it that way.
    • Here's the chart for fuel pressure vs. current draw, assuming your base fuel pressure is 3 bar and you run like 0.5bar boost on WOT, you should only momentarily hit 9amps here and there. (Ignore my prev post, I cannot read a chart these days it seems)
    • Those comp test results are not hideous. Whether they are accurate or not (ie, when that comp tester says 140 psi, is the real pressure120, 140 or 160?) is unknown to us. The state of the battery used to crank it over is unknown, etc etc. Many people around here would say that the absolute values and the spread are perfectly fine to just add boost and keep going. I personally would be happier with a narrower spread than that, but even the diff between 125 and 145 is not terrible. That one cylinder at 125 though, has probably copped some damage relative to the others. You should inspect the valves seeing as you've got it open. Do you know how to measure installed ring gaps? That, and an inspection of the rings themselves, is how you will determine whether they need to be replaced. If you're not good to do these things, take the block and the pistons and rings to a shop that is, and ask them for the go/no-go on them. Do the bores need a hone at all? If so, you might well be justified in getting some different pistons in order to get away from the ring supply problem. Whether you're happy to spend a lot more money right now, on more gear, rather than less money, but an amount that looks stupid given that you will only get a handful of rings in exchange for that money, is for you to decide.
    • also possibly backed up to my filler and shat down it! 🤣
    • Ok so i would love some advice here please, i purchased an R33 a few months back and its had a few mods done to the engine, its an RB25det running a Master ECU, 1200cc injectors, bigger turbo, oil cooler, oil filter relocation kit, Spool H-beam rods, acl/ross pistons. When i removed the motor from the vehicle (as its getting a respray) i thought i would compression test it and these are the following results. Cylinder 1-145psi, Cylinder 2-143psi, Cylinder 3-125psi, Cylinder 4-145psi, Cylinder 5-140psi, Cylinder 6-135psi this test was done with the motor on the ground and powering up the starter motor. I dropped the sump and found broken oil squirters on cylinder 3,5 and 6. I was told my rings are probably worn so i stripped the motor completely to get a new set of rings for it. The trouble is no one has these rings anywhere and they have to be custom made by Ross over in the states and will cost about $600+$200 delivery. My question is how can i tell if my rings are at fault and if they are still ok and is this price ok for a set of rings?
