Anti-Virus / Spyware

evening all,

looking at upgrading my AV in the comming weeks. and on the lookout for a new spyware aswell.

currently running AVG free/ Ad-aware / malwarebytes, but AVG its getting a bit sloopy, and i've had troubles with ad-aware detecting game files as spyware.

so i'm curious as to what everyone is using and their opinions of them are.

i run nothing so far i have found that to be quick and effective

i don't go looking for cracks of any sort and i don't bear-share or any of that crap i don't click weird links in emails or msn

I use Symantec Endpoint Protection (would not touch any norton / symantec consumer product) and Malwarebytes.

For a free AV, I've seen AVG let too many things in and alternately find too many false positives on computers I've fixed, don't mind Avira / Avast though.

Microsoft IMO have the best product out in terms of invasiveness - it simply isn't

Microsoft Security Essentials. Been using it now for 18 months without an issue. Auto updates, auto scans and best of all it is not a CPU hog. I can happily use on my PC with it fully activated and running scans and notice no impact.

Also uses the lowest resources of most free virus scanners.

It also integrates with MS Security centre on your PC and doesn't overlap etc. Never had a false negative, never had it stop me from doing anything but then i do use my PC as an Admin given I'm Win7 Ultimate.

Recently my brother actually had issues with AVG IIRC, it was stopping his utorrent client intermittently for some dumb reason. Soon as it was removed and replaced with MSE - problem gone.

not so say i haven't felt guilty not running antivirus and installed it and even bought Bit defender a couple of years ago

I ran nothing for the best part of 4 years simply because everything else was too intrusive/took up too much resources etc.

Hence I went with MSE once it had a bit of market penetration/review etc.

You can watch porn till the cows come home and not get a virus. You could click a kiddies site and get one.

It's all about the sites you visit and then the links you click.

I run PeerBlock with full lists activated as well which is also a very good compliment.

Still lets me use SAU, Facebook. Only common site i use that it blocks is GMail/Google searching. But you can just cancel specific lists if it gets too intrusive.

haha well i know of one organisation who went to the MS AV prog that came in with TMG a while back, and it blocked sweet fark all (like crazy ass infestations), so think I'll stick with SEP seeing as I don't have to pay for it

MSE is not an enterprise product though, its for the average joe home user. Not a company that is prone to far wider and more dangerous attacks.

If an organisation did as such, then they are simply retarded and deserve it.

Don't know the specifics Ash, but it was a corporate MS anti virus, not a home client, just saying that I wouldn't trust MSE either lol

TBH i don't trust any.

No anti-virus will ever be 100% fool proof though unless you have total lock-down which then allows users to not do a thing.

My workplace is semi-like that and no word of a lie, when the scan runs daily, you cannot use the PC for an hour due to a crap implementation.

So I just pull the plug and reboot it lol. The scan isn't intelligent enough to realise it never finished (our desktop guys make me laugh almost weekly)

End of the day anyone relying on anti-virus as a home user to 100% protect them is kidding themselves as no anti-virus will protect you from clicking a bogus link in an email/website.

Yet most average users assume this to be the case unfortunately.

The more invasive a anti-virus is, the more it will piss you off and you'll end up cancelling the alerts so often that you'll be caught out anyway

Has anyone ever thought that it's maybe the antivirus companies that create many (not all) of the viruses?

I'm with Madaz on this. If you know what NOT to click and which programs to execute, then you won't find a problem.

I was having more problems whilst using antivirus than not.

That being said, I don't leave my PC on 24/7 to constantly run torrents. It only gets turned on when it's being used.

Yeah I have often said without virus creator you don't need virus software, so the software creator pay the hacker's to jeep writing new viruses

Outpost Internet Security Pro on the home PC.

Have run it for a couple of years now and found it to be better than anything I had in the past.

SEP11 for enterprise though as was stated by other people.
