I been searching the forums and i havent found my anwer to a couple questions...so now im posting hoping someone can help me out....

Question 1: can you fit a Cartridge from a HKS GT-SS S13/S14 (with a compressor .60 A/R) into a GTR HKS GT-SS (with a compressor .42 A/R) housing?

Question 2: If i buy just HKS GT-SS cartridge can i use the stock R33 GTR turbo housings?

The reason why i ask is my car is in the shop and im working with a new tuner (because i moved) and im pulling out the stock turbos and upgrading them with HKS turbos.

I was going to go for the HKS GT-RS but my tuner suggested that the lag would be alittle much and he recommended that i go with HKS GT-SS Turbos but use the S13/S14 version cartridges because the compressor side is alittle bigger and the turbine side is the same ... there fore the turbos would put out more power than the GTR GT-SS but not lag as much as the GTR GT-RS.

Sounded good to me.....so i said ok lets go for it

Now my problem is engine is out of the car.. head is off.. etc.... all work is just finished so its time to put the car back together... i saw the turbos and they looked stock...but new and no ceramic wheels...

I looked on the internet and the pictures i see of the HKS GT-SS for the S13/S15 are stamped on the compressor side .60 AR......now the new turbos thats are going on my car have a .42 A/R stamp on the compressor side...just like stock

Thus bringing me to question one ... can you fit a HKS cartridge with a .60 A/R in a housing that says .42 A/R

Im also wondering if i have real genuine HKS turbos... because from what i seen HKS does not stamp or mark their GT-SS turbos with the HKS logos... the GT-RS has a metal tag but not the GT-SS....

Question 3: how can i tell if my HKS parts are genuine not just the regular garrett parts?

Question 4: Can anyone tell me the cartridge numbers for the Genuine HKS GTR GT-SS and the Genuine HKS S13/S14 GT-SS

Everyone thanks in advance.. im alittle worried about getting ripped of... this shop is well know and authorized buy HKS they seem honest and good people but you never know...

I just want to make sure im getting what im paying for ...

1)The A/R number refers to the compressor housing itself and not the wheel ...The wheel for the sr version is larger and trim is also different, so even if you machine both the comp and turbine housing of the gtr spec gtss(if possible at all) to fit the sr gtss cartridge, god alone knows how it would perfom. So to get the flow rates of the 0.6A/R housing you have to use the said housing along with its respective wheels.

2)Gtss cartridges are not available from Garrett

3)Gtr spec gtss have no HKS stamping on them. The only thing HKS about them are the actuators.:whistling:

If you give us the numbers on the id tag on the cartridge we can confirm for you.

With that said just put the gtss on there as is....if it worked better on a rb26 with a 0.6A/R housing, hks would have given us that option.

These turbos are good up to 300-320rwkw if you want more there are the HKS2530 or equivalent Garrett -5....these are not as big as the Gtrs but put down some good power too....lots of threads here on them

You can buy a GT-SS cartridge, its called a garrett -9

they are the same thing.

If they are making you buy HKS items they are ripping you a solid $1000 Aud as garrett & HKS for a -9/GT-SS are identical in every way.

Actuator is different, but that's not really important.

As for the rest of the story, its impossible for anyone to tell. You'd have to look the turbo ID Tags to see what they are.

Have a look and report back.

Cartridge numbers for GTSS turbos .

Remember the SR20 spec GTSS is a GT2860R turbo where the RB26 spec GTSS is a GT2859R . The turbines are the same family in 76 and 62 trims .

SR20 spec GTSS cartridge no 446179-53

RB26 spec GTSS cartridge no 446189-65

A difference , not mentioned often , is that std RB26 turbos use compressor housings moddled on T25 or T3 internals - can't remember . From memory R34 RB26 ball bearing turbos are a unique GT2556R .

Once you get into 60mm compressor wheels in the BB Garrett turbos they generally use a T04B 0.60 A/R compressor housing thats styled on the Nissan Garrett CA/SR one ie two bolt inlet flange three out . I think they do something similar but styled to suit RB26 twins in T4 as well .

The issue these days is that people seem to ewant 2530 performance with GTSS low and mid range , theres not a whole lot between GTSSs and 2530s for RB26's . I don't think its possible to have the best of both worlds without an engine capacity increase to boost the engine only torque low down .

I guess thats the compromise of having a GTR or RB26 .

I sometimes wonder if people would be happier with a Stag block and all the GTt gear for 280+ in a GTR , the single turbo RBs with the conventional inlet system can easily support 300 and things like VCT help pull the bottom end up .

Are you sure the -9 cartridge is available from Garrett?

I remember Disco saying the gtss wasnt available....I'm assuming indirectly he meant the -9 / -1 as well.....

If you can buy -9s over the counter all around the world...

Im pretty sure you'll be able to buy the cartridge without the housings, as that's all it is. :)

Either way using SR20 GT-SS in RB26 housings is a silly idea.

Just use Garrett -5s if you want more power. You'll never have the same response with more power as Disco said, its simply impossible.

    • Newbie here, proud owner of an Autech 260RS. I'm on the hunt for wiring diagrams specific to the 260RS, particularly S1. I've ran my eyes through R33, R34 Diagrams, there are some similarities, however continue to find incorrect wire colours and pins on connectors in the 33,34 diagrams.   I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction? I'd be happy to pay for the originals in Japanese. I can translate them, at least they would be accurate.   Any help please would be greatly appreciated, never heard an RB26DETT before let alone driven one, and I've got a spaghetti monster of goodness to sort out.   Cheers Benny  
    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again

    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
