Hi guys just an update

Came back from the workshop and he said that it was likely the actuator on the turbo that is stuffed overboosting the turbo causing it to whistle.

I advised him at first that it maybe the gasket between the manifold and Turbo so he opened the bonnet and reved it. He said if it was a leak he would have heard it.

So we then went for a spin and at times the boost would spike to around 13-14 psi and make that whistling noise. When the boost only when to 10 psi it wouldnt.

So his diagnosis was that since he had removed the boost controller and put the stock bits in and it was overboosting that it is probably the actuator that is stuffed causing the turbo to overboost and make that noise.

Opinions please? Sounds plausible? Should I get another workshop to look at it before I decide to shell out for a new turbo.'as he said I just may as well buy a new turbo.

Any help much appreciated :)

I would say hes probably telling you the truth. I've unfortunately got an exhaust leak from my rear turbo and the sound doesn't come or go, it's always there. You can hear the 'airy' sound on decel and it runs like a bucket of shit. Have him finish of his work and before you pay the bill ask him to come for a quick lap to see if it's still doing it.

I doubt you need a new turbo.. more like the actuator hasnt been put on properly or you have a leaking hose, why not get in there yourself and eliminate all these possible causes, source a second hand acutator and try it yourself

i leaking hose would give you overboost, cost to replace =zip

get a bright light in there and look for any soot gather around the gaskets which = leaking gasket

make sure you dont have some garrett highflow, i never knew myself until i was told,

you dont have a cheap split dump pipe do you?

Just an update guys!

So after 2 weeks of being told the noise is my boost controller, then my turbo , then my actuator and dismissing that it can't posssibly be the gasket between the turbo and manifold, I dropped off the car to Rob at Sabbiddin Automotive to get the car checked out. I've had my car for their for mechanical work in the past and respect his professionalism.

I just received a call from Rob just then and hey prestoooo...It's the gasket between the turbo and manifold, and that there's a bit of shoddy work from the previous work

Regardless I'll be eventually getting a new turbo soon, but didn't appreciate the advice from the previous workshop even after telling him what was the problem.

So just a shout out to everyone that helped and especially Daniel from Elite Racing

I won't publicly name the workshop as that isn't appropriate & allowed and to a certain extent everyone makes mistakes, but I will say this workshop is in the South-eastern suburbs of Melbourne and is a workshop referred onto by one of the top Tuners in Melbourne that is regarded on this forum.

:thanks: to the SAU Community :action-smiley-069:

Glad to help. It's good that you found someone to sort it out for you. I was going to suggest someone when you asked but thought again about it. I was absolutely certain it was going to be that gasket so it is a good thing you persisted with it or you end up like every other poor bastard around.....even poorer and still without a fixed car.

Rule #2 is: If it smells like shit, feels like shit and tastes like shit....it's most likely not going to be a cheese sandwich

Thanks guys

Just picked up the car and it feels great again. Rob said some bolts were missing, some bolts not tight, hoses weren't in properly ahhh i just had to laugh.

Now its time to save up for some ID 1000 injectors and a Hypgear turbo

    • The ABS and/or TCS being missing/broken will not cause the engine to misbehave. It just casues CEL to come on and annoy you. The CEL is useless if it is always on, so you have to do the things you have to do to get rid of it, so it can be useful. Being a Stag ECU, then yes, it will not expect TCS to be present. But it will expect ABS to be present and working. You will need to either make the ABS CU talk to the ECU (don't ask me what that will take on an NA R34), and make sure the hardware is working....or, you just need to blank it out in Nistune. Do not persist with the stock ECU. You will just have problems. Gte it Nistuned. Start from there. DO YOU HAVE A BOOST SENSOR? The ECU's boost sensor that it. It is connected to the loom at the rear of the coil cover. Usually rides on the firewall on an R34, but is usually bolted down to a bracket along with all the other crap at the back of the coil cover when a Neo is dropped into another car. If you do not have it, the ECU will shit the bed. So, do you have one?
    • So sadly the fuel pump etc was not it. The pump and filter is new and it is still cutting around 4000 rpm. A read something about ABS/TCS (engine is from stagea and ECU too so no TCS) and i dont know for 100% that my car has ABS. It has ABS "cube" in engine bay but i dont think it works(or at least from my braking experience). Can be something like that?  I will be driving the car next week to Nistune tuner to properly see what is wrong...
    • the Tomei LSD fluid with lsd kit. frustrated that it was shaking the car to crap and affecting everything else negatively, I pulled the diff last night, and removed the lsd carrier, could not find anything wrong, however it seem to be 100 locked up acceleration, and deacceleration, wondering if they sent me a 2 way not a 1.5??  either way I installed the stock open carrier back in place. test drove everything smooth as butter again. no shake, shutter, random, what felt like clutch slip and grab or drive shaft play, etc. something differently wrong in side the lsd. I might bother taking it apart (if possible) to figure out what's going on inside this carrier, as bought too long ago to return.  only draw back is its back to a one wheel wonder.
