N/a R33 Muffler

Hello,

At this time I have a Magnaflow muffler on my car. I like the muffler, but I do a lot of long distance travelling and when you are in lower rev ranges (1500-3500RPM) the exhaust is very loud. Being distance travelling there is hills

where the RPM is in that cruise range and the minute you start going up hill/increasing the accelerator the car is very loud. I have tried getting over it, but it's so loud you can't hear the radio, you end up with your ears aching and sometimes

after a while you even get a headache.

I was wondering if there was any ways to quieten this around that rev range when it's straining more or is there a better muffler, performance and sound wise out there?.

Heyy i had the exact same problem with my muffler, i put a silencer on it but it didnt make much difference, so i went back to my stock muffler. You could try putting a silencer on yours but my advice is to change back to a stock muffler since you are losing power by using your current muffler. Your car is a non turbo (like mine) so the engine relies on the exhaust system to create back pressure, unlike turbo models which create backpressure from the turbo. By putting the muffler on you have robbed torque from your car. Im guessing you just chucked on a straight 3 inch mufffler or straight pipe on your standard exhaust system. Thats the same mistake i did, and i got a very loud exhaust which made it unbearable to drive. If you notice on the factory muffler, there is a butterfly valve thing, which actually connect to the throttle and is kept closed to give it more back pressure, this helps the initial torque to push the car in a higher rpm, the valve then opens to give the car more power as it climbs higher in the rpm to increase peak power. But by putting a different muffler the back pressure dissapears, causing the car to use more fuel and reduce initial accleration. The only place i can think of that sells factory mufflers is Dandy exhausts, thats were i got mine done, and it doesnt cost much. Mine costed 80 dollars to do. if you want power and a nice exhaust sound, you need to spend 1100 dollars on a proper exhaust system.

btw in my opinion, just stick with the factory exhaust system, cause nissan engineered it for optimum performance, and the ecu is set to work with what the car currently runs on...e.g. the standard exhaust system. If you wanna change exhaust, then change to a cold air intake aswell, then do a ecu retune/remapp so it can run better. thats goona cost ya 2-3k if you want more performance, as for power gains your looking at 25-30kw. Which is actually a fair bit and i reckon you would be able to beat a ve commodore with that much power added on ;p

Ok, il have a look at getting a standard one, um I bought the car with the muffler on it. All i pretty much know is it has a Catback exhaust and the magnaflow muffler and it has a K&N Cold air intake.

How does the standard one sound and am I really going to get more power with a standard one? Ideas from others maybe as well?

hmmm you sure its a cat backk?? from my experiences catbacks arent as noisy, they have more of a nice tone, If it is a cat back then i dont think the stock muffler would bolt onto that. Take it to dande exhausts and tell them your problem, they will reduce the noise for you, do you live in melbourne??

Yeah, when I bought it the owner said it has a Catback exhaust on it, il take a photo of underneath the car tonight to see if you can tell. I live in Tasmania and i've taken it to a muffler specialist, he put another reasonator or something in it, he said there is no space for a second muffler and he said nothing else. The attachment is kind of like what I have on my car (Not exact)

the factory muffler does not have a butterfly valve nor any sort of system that will do what you described.

what you've described is actually like what the HSV VE's "bi-modal" exhaust does, or similar to an x-force varex, which you can either control the valve manually with a remote & im pretty sure on the newer ones you can have it automatically adjust at certain RPM.

try somewhere else, there is definitely room for a centre muffler, the stock system has one so no reason why you cant have someone fit one to an aftermarket system.

i had the same issue, had a catback installed on my r34 with no centre muffler, it was horrible, i tried a couple of different exhaust shops over a weekend & the all said they can only fit a hotdog resi, so i ended up just booking it in with the guy who intially did it & he had no trouble fitting a small 8"x4" centre.

also, no chance of gaining 25-30kw from a cold air + exhaust on an N/A skyline haha

@ lindz34, The factory r33 skyline does come with a butterfly valve which is in one of the mufflers hole. The one in the skyline isnt electronic, It is actually connected to the throttle by the silver wire, similar to the one connected to the throttle body, and as the driver pushes the throttle, the valve opens to let out more air.

"Some" R33 do have the butterfly valve on the exhaust, must have been a factory option - I got the official Nissan factory technical manual on the R33 and some cars do have this equiped.

R32 and R34 do not have this feature

For your exhaust just buy a high flow cat and put a stock rear muffler.

apologies for my failed attempt at correcting :P

anyway if it helps dude, i have a 2.5" cat back, small 8"x4" centre muffler & x-force varex rear oval muffler (cannons are quite a bit louder than oval shaped)

i drive on the freeway every day to & from work, sitting at 100kmph nearly the whole way & it's not an issue drone-wise, never been pulled up by the police for being too loud either.

there's a few options that the other guys have pointed out, so i guess it depends what you want, if you still want a nice sounding exhaust then go a centre muffler & if you want it to be more stock then obviously a stock rear muffler.

as for brands, my centre is a magnaflow - sounds nice.

mine is a 2.5" with a hot dog AND a resonator AND recently changed to a mild steel oval muffler - every possible thing in the world to keep it quiet ...

its still very loud ... with the last exhaust change though it took a few weeks before the car started to keep it down so im hoping this is the same thing here and it will eventually shut up.

in terms of power - think more of 2-3 kw rather than 20-30

    • Agreed with the rest. Also at least based on my own research, there are no readily available stock or close-to-stock RB20Neo maps that you could download and use as a base were you to buy a complete standalone ECU, and the regular 20DET maps don't really work well so you'd need to take it to a tuner if you have no experience. I installed an AEM V2 on my 20Neo+T and had lots of headaches until I got it to run and idle properly but I've yet to remap it fully. You have to start building up your timing and fuel maps entirely from the ground up; even the ones for a 25 didn't work at all.
    • Got some decent progress after work yesterday and also today. Got the ECU all wired and passenger side interior all back together. Kept the wiring up nice and high to avoid people standing on it. Got the surge tank relays rewired and tidied up the pump wiring and cut a hole to bring the cables through.  I found a spare USB cable I had lying around so I decided to cut it up and see if I could use it for my CAN 1 bus. Turned out one of the pins I needed was to the shield of the cable so i cut it up and desoldered it and resoldered to the correct pins.  Had the issue with the powersteering hose hitting the A/C compressor and fan shroud. I pulled the bracket off and modified it to remove the front mounting point which now clears it all. Will keep an eye on it to see if theres any signs of fouling once it's up and running.

    • So today I went well outside my comfort zone (again) to replace my valve cover gasket.  I have had a big leak over the exhaust leading to a lot of smoke and smell every time I drove it. The leak was in the rear driver's corner.  The job wasn't hard as such, just a bit finicky and time consuming.  The old gasket was rock hard and broken right where the leak was.  The leaky corner had so much sitting oil in it.  The good news to my amateur eyes was no buildup or sludge under the cover. It all looked fairly nice in there.   I haven't started it yet. I ran out of light and body when putting the coils and injector loom back in. Probs only 30min left for the morning.  I was so nervous putting the cover back on, I must have lifted it 5 times to make sure the gasket was still seated properly. God it's going to be nice to be leak free and not make other traffic light queuers think my car is about to explode.
    • Gave the Mazda it's first wash, it will need some clay, a light compound, and polish polish to remove a few swirl marks, but that will be a job for when I have a full day to get my DA polisher action on
