Can you tell me how you are braking so many boxes the os gikens can handle big power 800BHP some say more as there was one guy that ran 9 sec runs in it. HOw in the hell can you brake 2?

When my os giken was getting installed the guy said the gears are massive he swears i will not snap it im currently running close to 500bhp my aim is around 650bhp and they should handle excellent with that power, How much power are you running and what are you doing to make them brake, are they second hand sets or wat?

PS: my stock box was never changed since brand new in 1994 last of the r32 gtr's. I had that power for around 1.5 years and i was doing alot of rev n dumps before it finally snapped from 2nd to 3rd.

I think that's called idiocy, but I'm guilty of a similar thing (at lower revs though, 60kph into 2nd with a clutch side step). gotta suggest it's your driving style possibly combined with a solid button clutch or similar (no give) that's the root of your problem- I have 540hp atw with a stock box, 2 years no breaks, daily driver plus a little of the aforementioned idiocy. I also have a single plate cushioned organic clutch. Suggest you develop more mechanical sympathy in your driving style? Seen stock boxes holding together with 600rwhp ( though maybe not 33gtr 3rd gear). Parcel shelf shift is when you give your hand a 'run up' from the rear parcel shelf (an exaggeration) before slamming through the shift and stuffing your synchros.

Yes its certainly clutch choice that makes or breaks a GTR box.

I've been doing 7300rpm (380rwkw/-5s) launches on Hoosier Drag radials, i expected the box to break in all honesty... But instead i destroyed a front diff after maybe 25 full launches. I was also flat shifting 3rd - 4th just for shits and giggles.

At LEAST 50-60 odd launches on street/semi comp rubber too. And thats just since I've owned it. Let alone the 2 owners for the last 7 years, must be triple digits lol.

Thats using a Nismo Coppermix Twin though which is not as harsh as the buttons etc.

exactly what i meant, and most people ride the the clutch a little bit and then there is side stepping which when you push clutch pedal all the way down and the dial in 8000+rpm and then slide your foot side ways off the pedal in stead of lifting your foot up with pedal, flat shift is not good for stock boxes but at least everything is moving in the right direction not going for a stand still

people dont seem to realaise the STANDARD SYNCHROS are used and often fail in the os gearset. its the "crunching" that shock loads the gears (gears are part of the synchro) and thats why they break.

i just dont see the point of spending 6k on a gearbox you have to granny shift.

i hear ya mate with the OS box's you have to granny shift i like to enjoy driving my car hard .. ive done about 20 revv and dumps with the last box and it was all good but one night decided to go for a drive i revved out first [ i didn't dump it ] hit second then about 7000 rpm the box just let go i lost second gear only .. the OS box before this one i managed to snap the output shaft ... the shit thing is everytime you brake something in these box's you all most have to replace the hole gear set ... Have a look at the motive dvd called gtr challenge its the white r32 gtr ...

5 speed Close Ratio Gear Set with strengthened Input Shaft

Fortified Transmission Center Plate (GTR32/33)

I also Change the main shaft to the R33 gtr one its abit stronger.

I also replaced the synchros.

I have actually been told there are some fake gear sets going around.

Anyways

When i drive my car it sounds like a spaceship, I actually love the sound of it. The size and teeth angles are different then stock to make them stronger and more durable.

What people also don't realise is that boxes like the PPG need to be regularly pulled out, maintained/checked etc or they too will end up with the same fate as any other box.

At least with a OS, if you don't shift faster than the box can handle, then it'll never require you to do anything.

So whilst it might be a 6k box, that's all it will ever be. Spend 6k on a PPG and then have to pull it out once/twice a year, replace the worn parts etc suddenly its a 10k gearbox in a couple of years.

Not sayin the OS is better or whatever, just that too many people think putting in a box like the PPG is a "set and forget" option. Which it isnt.

Ye just pointing it out as too many people think a dog box is a "set and forget" item when realistically its the opposite and "realistic" cost is a lot more than the box itself. Especially if you are paying for labour every 6 months to have it taken our and anything that needs replacing - replaced.

No doubt it is cheaper but i know 4 people without a problem on OS boxes from 400rwkw to 600rwkw. And its not like these cars aren't driven hard. Just driven without trying outshift the box each gearchange ;)

i dont dout the os is a nice upgrade. but for those who like to throw the gearstick thru the window, a dog box is the only realistic option. because the factory nissan synchro is gone. and that is the root of all the issues with these gearboxes. if you know how to use a dog box, it can be used for quite a while without a new set of dog rings.

for a daily streeter you just have no choice but to shift with some mechanical repect if using a synchro box.

I there a way to get upgraded synchros? Strengthened ones? that will go with the os giken

    • Resizing injectors in Nistune can be done a couple of ways, and there are a couple of ways that you can make a mess of it. The tuner needs to be really aware of the effects of whichever approach he uses (either K, or TIM). They are both easy enough to "get the injector size right" to run the engine. But little details like old start enrichment and hot start are affected differently, depending on which boxes you check.
    • Pretty safe to say almost everyone that has tuned their own car has experienced this issue. The difference being that we have our laptop in the car and when it happens, it's literally 10 seconds of tuning to sort it.  Would you be happy to plug in your laptop and sort this yourself? It is a very simple process and there is no risk of harming your engine (if you are worried about that).
    • Yeah thats the next step now, either they wil or i will take out for a drive to work and go straight their after work and see is we get the same issues 🤞  thought i try my luck here too, never know someone else might have had the same issue but thanks for the reply
    • Basically your tuner needs to drive it for the 30 min (or whatever) to create the same conditions then check the ECU settings and sensors at that time. They may not be excited to because that takes them 30 min rather than just opening the bonnet and seeing the problem straight away.... Hot start is generally not as tricky as cold start, but there would be a table for fuel enrichment vs coolant temp as a starting point
    • Yeah, they all cant say anything for sure as everything is working fine . Said unable to find an issue untill it stops again. Could mist likely be CAS wiring or IAS valve issue but again not 100%
