i bought a garrett 3076 .82 less than a year ago and bolted it up to my standard rb25 neo. only mods were afm, pod, fmic, nistune and zorst.

we made 250rwkw no warries so decided to up the boost a bit more and made 270rwkw at 6k rpm when the standard headgasket gave way in spectacular form. cracked the radiator a spewed coolant everywhere.

i towed the car home and put a new commetic headgasket on along with arp headstuds. i also got the head cleaned up before installing. the car started up and ran no warries. i only drove it for a week or so to work and back waiting to get it tuned up for even more boost.

but on probly the fourth day of having it running it stated to run like it was missing a cylinder on start up but would clear up with in 10 to 15 secs. and then run fine, i took it easy on it when it stated to happen. i got some new plugs thinking that would help, but the next day it did it again.

on the way home from work the following day probly 10 15min drive at most i got home and turned car off to hear a weird spool down noise from the turbo, that then turned into a gurgling noise from the intake i poped the bonnet to find coolant spray from my pod filter?????

the car didnt get hot or realy miss a beat except that start up issue i had.

the only thing i can think to explain it is maybe my turbo has an internal crack letting coolant get to the comp wheel?????

i have since pulled the turbo off to inspect looks fine but who really know so im thinking off sending it to garrett for warenty inspection, gonna cost me if its fine.

i have compression tested the motor seems ok and tested cooling system seems ok.

any other ideas anyone??????????????????????????

Sounds to me like a warped head. Did you check it?

The coolant spray won't be from the compressor side, it will have come from your radiator or overflow and simply sprayed around by the wind.

If water is introduced into the turbo via any way, whether that be a leaking gasket, cracked head, or whatever, it can very quickly bugger your turbo. White hot exhaust wheels do not like cool (by comparison) water.

morrie from horsepower in a box done the tunning it was running about 15lb then steped it up to 17lb when the headgasket let go.

the motor runs fine and compression is good so thinking clooant system or turbo. head was decked so should have good seal

Steve isn't. But I will. 15 psi shouldnt Pop the head gasket unless there are underlying issues or a poor tune.

To give you an idea. My 33 makes 270@16psi on a mainline with the same turbo. Power seems fairly low. What pump and injectors ?

the neo came out with larger injectors from what ive heard and the figures seem to show it.

ive just been upping boost and seeing what needs replaced first on a stock motor. i know its not the safest way to go but deffinetly the most interesting

the turbos been sent off now so if its not the problem well then at least its rulled out.

but whats the point of having the injectors pump coilpacks afm and not having the turbo to boost it up?

my ways not as safe but more fun and interesting.

anyways i got the turbo back from testing and its fine. i comp tested the engine again and thats fine so im gonna put it back together and test the cooling system again. but im goin in for surgery on foot tomoz so that wont be for a few weeks. ill let yas no what happens.

im a bit shocked that the injectors are only 370cc are you sure?

still cant explain the gurgling in the turbo i heard through the intake???????????

yeah there 370cc.

cant see how it would be fun, after potentially 2 motors thats not the word id use to describe it, lol. doesnt seem that your issues are fuel related, but surely for peace of mind do injectors and pump while their off. still cant believe HPIAB let you wind the wick up on it,

yeah ill be fitting injetors and pump as funds allow but for now thell have to do.

anyways enough slander about my lack of care for my bottom end.

what else could be causing my rough start up for short period and coolant where it shouldnt be isue?????

    • Driveline vibration is resolved. I ended up loosening all my engine mount and trans mount bolts, giving it a good shake then retightening everything and it's gone... Let's just say I was surprised that fixed it.  I've been happily driving it around again but unfortunately put zero time into my direct port/constant pressure WMI setup. I'm on vacation next week, so I'll try and finalize it then.  On a different note, I spent all week fuel/ignition mapping 2x 216L V16 engines. Turbo's were burning glycol and we swapped them out for larger units. We also had planned emissions testing on site, so I figured I'd be there the same week to use their instrumentation and massage any emissions issues out if needed. This was a first for me. Fuel management is similar in certain ways to automotive (i.e air density as load variable) but very different in others. It's all PLC based and AFR's are controlled by air and not fuel. They use a control valve between the turbo and air manifold to control pressure which in turn controls AFR's. Due to this, target AFR tables supplied by the OEM are in pressures and not mass which really through me off. They use air pressure vs fuel pressure tables. I also relied on an O2 concentration sensor the emissions team had in the exhaust. Ignition timing was also all over the place and we were losing a fair bit of power. They're now happily sitting at 16-40BTDC depending on load. We were making about 1600kw at 900rpm at 90% load. Engines were running a lot smoother as well.
    • heh, aint no R32 ever meeting modern targa cage rules unless the driver is veeeery short OP, good luck with the sale, since its already in the land of freedom I'm sure you will find a good buyer.
    • meh, it was a good video, clear about the issue and how he dealt with it. A bit heavy on the RTV and very brave to put an RB in anything without rebuilding it first, but otherwise I thought it was good Dose, I'm not sure that having the pickup forward is a big issue; yes of course the oil could shift under brakes but the sump should never be empty enough for that to be a problem (unless you also have a higher volume oil pump, and that oil can't return from the head to the sump quickly enough)

    • I'd love a Haltech ECU, and Haltech 10 dash. Was having a chat with Rob and Andy @ Haltech when Rob put one in his MR2. First one I'm kind of interested in too, as you can dim it RIGHT down. Andy was saying bright dashes is one of his peeves too!
