Well i am new here and my car is a s13 with a r33 rb25det s2 and i did the swap myself and got it done some months ago and be trying to sort out minor stuff...i have driven the car and even though because of a bad maf i couldnt really enjoy it i started noticing smoke coming off the alternator one night i stopped at a friends house..so a couple days later the battery died so...i said ok it was the battery cause it was a junkyard battery i was using...so now i borrowed a friend optima battery and i decided to put my hand on the alternator while the car wasnt moving or on or key turned on nothing and i just felt the alternator keep getting hotter and hotter to the point i couldnt keep my hand on it any more...i have double checked everything literally a million times and i am stumped as to what could be causing this problem..please help me i really would like to drive my car without worry about killing a 4th battery..And thank u guys so much ahead of time

It may be overcharging. Get a multimeter and check the battery volts when idling. Raise the rpm and check the battery volts.

If there is any signs of an overcharging alternator it needs to be replaced

well sir could it be the wireharness that fubbared?? but i will actually go pick up a multimeter today and see what i get.

and as for stuff i check...i went over the engine harness...i checked all my grounds..even added more...and also go a new lowerharness to make sure the old one wasnt shorting out

also just to make sure is there suppose to be a ground on the back of the alternator casing?? i just wanted to make sure and if so can someone show me a pic of where exactly it should be and thanx again

When an electrical component is running efficiently, or shorting, it overheats due to wasted energy. But since the alternator also has moving parts, something could be warn internally and friction is causing excess heat. If your electronics are overvolting, you would have probably killed some crucial electronic components but its a good idea to check out the voltage asap. Any fuses popping?

no no fuses pop my ecu is not fried nothing everything is fine and all my fuses are fine...also i forgot to mention that the alternator get super hot while the car is not running and the battery is just hooked up...the only bad thing with this is that i keep destroying batteries so gave my car the nickname "battery destroyer" hahaha anyway also i forgot to mention that i can take out my alternator fuse and the car will still have power to it...so this thing is tripping me out hard

Can you borrow an (or have a spare) alternator and try that? it wouldnt take long to swap them out or ,as stated above, take it to an auto electrician who have multimeters and all the testing gear that you could think of

the issue is where i live not alot of rb or rb parts around...or else i would have gladly bought a new one

eBay or the forsale section here. You will almost definitely be able to find one and someone can post it out to you.

You have either shorted something out or that alternator is f**ked. You can get them reco'd.

well i am going over the harness as i am typing this but my question is does the alternator have a ground on the back of the casing or what??

The whole alternator is bolted to the engine. The whole thing it self acts as a ground I believe. I can't recall if it has a dedicated ground but when my last motor was pulled to sell it had the red power cable coming out of it. I can't recall for sure as I have never had to deal with the alternator but I can find out(others can to and others might know).

Just get a wiring diagram and check it out.

Here's the back of my alternator - I think it's a RB25 alternator, it's on a RB25DET in a R32.

:( :( :( well guys i back with another question and didnt want to make a new thread so i figured i would revive this one..Anyway on to the problem i have had this problem for far too long now and would like for it to go away its really upseting me...everytime i plug in my maf the car dies and its really annoying i cant drive my car like that in loop mode no more its really upset me i cant enjoy my car period because of this stupidness...so my question to u guys is

1..Where to u hook ur 12v power source up to cause everything i hook mine up to causes another problem on the engine..so i could like to hear from someone who has done it and have no problem

2. how does the signal ouput for tme afm really work cause i never touched those 2 wires just extended them like i should during the harness conversion but just asking to make sure i didnt do anything wrong

3.WHY DOESNT MY RB LIKE ME :( :( :(

    • Hi, i’m making a rb25det coil loom for Vag short coil. Can anybody tell me which Ecu signal wire belong to coil number 1 and 2,3,4,5,6? The connecting switch in above pic is 8 wire i think white is for +12v and black for earth.

    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
