+1 for CRD. They did my 2nd rebuild.

$400 to get Tony (aka Fridge) From Eurotow to put it on his awesome truck and take it up to Sydney. You can drive it back.

My GTR has done this trip and no hassle and no damages. I have even traveled back with Tony in his truck.

$400 really? Fridge has helped me out a lot over the last couple of weeks I dunno why I didn't even think to ask him lol.

So CRD are as good as I've heard then.

Hmmm as you can imagine this is all a massive headf$&k lol

The main problem we faced though was actually getting the car there as we don't have something capable of towing a car trailer. That's the only reason we've decided to get it done in Canberra.

As others have said, Fridge does it for a good price. Failing that you can hire a Nissan Patrol from Hertz out in Queanbeyan - I did this with a car trailer, whole thing cost less than $300 to get a GTR back from Sydney.

Speaking of Canberra, I went out to the place that zebra suggested and it didn't look like it had been used in a while.

Fairly certain Pro Engines moved out of the address listed on their website years ago now. No idea where the current location would be.

Aside from CRD, if you get the engine out you can send it down to Race Pace in Melbourne. I got my current motor from them and it is awesome to drive, feels very healthy and responsive (and I flog the piss out of it, with a T04z hanging off the side). Just another option.

But all that aside, hopefully you have just spun a bearing and not caused any other damage. If this is the case it should be relatively cheap to fix given it sounds like you have all the other go fast bits already.

Just out of curiosity how much did you guys spend on your rebuilds? You don't have to say if you don't want to.

And Richard you said you just had your second rebuild done, where was the first done and what happened?

I did my first rebuild with Pro Engines back in 2003. Cost was around $8000 and for that I got standard rods prepped, Arias forged pistons, ACL bearings, ARP studs, a bit of headwork, new gaskets etc. That motor lasted around 25,000kms running ~340awkw (HKS 2530's running at 25psi).

Second "rebuild" was more of a freshen up of the first rebuild I had. New bearings, aftermarket rods (cant remember what they were), new gaskets and studs etc. Cost was around $5k from memory and this was in 2005 and done by Pro Engines. This motor did 0km.

Third motor I am on now is the Racepace motor - cost was quite a bit, but worth every cent :D

All of this is making me feel a lot better about our situation. Thanks heaps guys. I guess first step is finding out exactly what's ruined and needs fixing and then just go from there. The whole swap another engine in idea has gone out the window lol.

A little off topic....I work in fyshwick on Newcastle street and across the road from my shop in the carpark near j racing is a white 32 GTR with a black front bar that I see nearly every day, does it belong to anyone on here?

From memory the first rebuild was about $10k with new JE forgies, Eagle rods, Poncams. ACL race bearings, ARP headstud kit, full head service etc...

Out/In cost $2800 extra plus consumables like all fluids, sparkplugs and gaskets to bolt the boltons back on. Same shop Nik used.

So $12k to $15k is on par with ESP's quote but thats with all NEW pistons, rods, cams, bearings so you should come out if most of your internals are ok for $7k plus out/in of your block.

Second rebuild would have been the same except I needed new turbs, new JE Pistons oversized and I also decided to go more the full monty with 9.5l sump, Nitto oil pump & crank collar, Koyorad, CAB, 2L custom oil catch can, Haltech platinum pro ecu and the list goes on and on. This one is In the vicinity of just over $20k - CRD

Oil starvation twice with big end bearing failures scared the bejeezus out of me.

Now I have more oil than Texas in the GTR :rofl2:

The one thing I tried to take into account when choosing a GTR was oil starvation.....i knew it was gonna happen at some point, just didn't think it would be the day after we picked the car up lol.

    • I hadn't thought about the variable power steering assist. Presumably, it will always be the same level of assist as you get in an S14. The R32/3/4 are either helliishly heavy (at low speeds) if the solenoid is not powered at all, or hellishly too light (at high speed) if it is powered all the time. I presume that it is PWM controlled on those cars. I hadn't thought about the S cars not having variable assist. ugh. What crappy plebby cars they must be!
    • Hmm yeah that is a good point. It looks like it'll just bolt in with no real issue besides maybe the bushings being different. My other concern was that 2 pin plug that I assume is used in some way to control the rack solenoid depending on the speed signal from the ecu. The DMAX rack doesn't even have that plug though so, don't think it'll matter. Might just order the rack and see how it goes. Will update this when I figure something out
    • I'd say it's a fair bet that the feed and return fluid lines will be in different enough spots that you would need to come up with a way to cut the originals short and adapt with new hard line adaption or braided teflon hoses or somesuch. But really, you have the car, you have the photos of the DMAX rack - you should be able to go out there and see for yourself whether they're in the same or different spots.
    • I've been doing some looking around and honestly was just considering throwing a new rack at it. I saw that the dmax silvia rack bolts up into the 33 with the silvia bushings but not sure if the high pressure lines will sit in the correct spot. I believe other version of the 33 rack are the same/similar to the racks that can be opened up without as much fuss so I assume the dmax rack would fit but any ideas?
    • I've never played with one, but I would expect that you are correct. That slot looks like it is intended to be used to unscrew the end, and the flats on the body would be better than grabbing it around the round bit with a pipe wrench. So, yeah, probably unscrews. You'll probably have to make a tool to drive in that slot.
