Ok WTF is going on,are people putting the cam cap thingys on backwards (I don't mean you Roy)

WazR32GTSt has his running, did you use the GTR cam caps?

g'day mate,

the only thing that was used from a GTR was the cams themselves (unless my mechanic put something else in and didn't charge me for it! - not likely...)

Waz.

Hey arch, you need to read the whole thread to find the link to the list of cams and differences -somewhere in there near front.

This is an interesting thread if you have an RB20DET as I have and modifiying looking for 250AWkws.

Seems some have had probs ( Binding Inlet) and some have been fine (Sydneykid)

SK has come up with the likely answer in maybe they are slightly bent!

It seems to be possible but has anyone checked their cams -BBenny? Waz?

It worries me that I cooked the motor at Calder as well, but the Head guys said its OK and straight but not sure I want to put the old cams back in now.

I want to do this mod as I have just done extensive work on the head and it sounds like if it works it makes some great power, BUT I am not sure on the Idling probs either that some have had after fitting.

I have a mod ECU as well which could complicate it further. Maybe going Power FC.

Sydneykid, do you have any suggestions on the best suited cams that wont bind up with too much lift in the RB20 as there seem to be many dif specs of RB26?

Also considering your info on the Chev, is there mods to improve the followers like drill larger/more oil holes or maybe chamfer etc?

My inlet cam will be visiting a machine shop, just to see if it is bent and the cause of dead engine...expensive lesson. When buying 2nd hand internals, get them checked before bolting them in....my concerns are over Australia Posts handling of them...but thats not confirmed, just a suspicion looking at the cam and the journals when it all came out.

For now my daily driver is staying just that, no more mods on my R32...start banking my money for something with big Hellas that belts thru the forest in the dark!!!!

ok to bring this thread back. was anyone else tryed installing gtr cams in rb20 since the 12/08/04??? and made it work on the standard ecu?? another question. can you use the rb20 cam gears with the gtr cams installed?? or do you need the gtr cam gears?

Even ppl with a PFc have not been able to get them to work:(

Bin the idea, unless yuo are doing it yourself and you are confident nothing is going to go wrong, in which case its just a waste of your time, but be interesting to hear from someone that gets it to work...

But, be warned little things like seized bolts in cam cap/journals may mean your playign will cost you money:(

well still not idleing. So i decided to do a compression test down to 80psi on all cylinders.

Have no idea why only thing i can think of is that lifters may be getting pushed down more than the standard cams .2mm more with gtr cams so it might be letting the oil get commpressed out the whole on the side.

any help would be good. Did SK mention to any of you guys if he carried out any other modifications to make it work.

My GTS4 RB20DET was 120 on all last time when OK so yours is down a lot _BUT EVEN!

Does this mean that the timing is out a lot not allowing full compression - did you align the timing marks etc. correctly??

I have a set of GTR cams awaiting installation in our Dragcar RB20 when this is sorted out.

I do have a spare stripped head so I will lay the GTR cams in it and dial them soon.

OK so all we've been able to come up with is that maybe the lifters need to be bled as they might be leaving the valves open.

So I took the cams out again and bled lifters put ex cam back gotto do inlet cam tommorrow then see if it's back to normal.

I hope so

Tomei's website has all the OEM cam info, http://www.tomei-p.co.jp/_2003web-catalogu...r_engindex.html click on camshaft, then specs on the top of the page.

The lobe center angle on RB26 cams are a bit diferent than the LCA on the 20 /25 cams, I'm pretty sure that timing the motor using the standard marks won't work. I think that might explain the low compression and bad idling issues. I tried this swap on my old 20 with standard cam gears and could barely hold an idle and power was nil. At one point we accidentally retarded the exhaust cam 1 tooth and it actually ran a bit better. I'll be trying it on my 25det with adjustable gears shortly and will post results.

    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
